Photographer Arthur Ou was born in Taipei and currently lives and works in New York. This
publication is composed of his series of photographs of artists reading 'Tractatus Logico-
Philosophicus' by Ludwig Wittgenstein, with quotes from the book and an essay by Walter Benn
Michaels. It is an intriguing theme for a series of portraits, because "pictures of people reading
aren't simply (or necessarily or even usually) portraits. In fact, if the default setting of the portrait
involves posing for the photographer, it would be more fitting to say that a picture of someone
reading is a kind of anti-portrait," according to Michaels. The readers thus belong to the world
defined by the camera.

Amsterdam's Oude Kerk, consecrated in 1306, is one of the oldest buildings in the city. After the
iconoclasm in 1566, the church slowly gained a serene, sober appearance. Over the course
several hundred years, it was enlarged and renovated until the building achieved its current form.
Misha de Ridder explored the tactility of the walls and the diversity of shapes in the Oude Kerk
with a high-resolution digital camera. The series brings us closer to the centuries of hands that
constructed and altered the church with exceptionally detailed images of painted walls illuminated
by soft daylight falling through the tall windows. Even the ink's scent on the pages recalls this
spatial experience.
