How to Teach English to Small Kids

If you are trying to teach English to small kids, the good news is children are incredibly adapted to learning languages,
and pick up new words, phrases and grammar structures easily. The bad news is that kids have a lot of energy and a
shorter attention span than adults, so you will struggle to get them to sit and study.
However, you can use the kids' energy to your advantage and engage them with
games, songs and activities that will help them learn while having fun.

Step 1: Immerse the kids in the English language. Children have an advantage over
adults because they rapidly pick up new words from conversation around them. Create
a productive learning environment by exposing kids to English through classroom
conversation, age-appropriate DVDs and videos.

Step 2: Use music and songs to help teach small kids English. According to Super Simple Songs: "Young learners pick up
vocabulary, grammatical structures and the rhythm of the language simply by doing what they already love to
do...singing." Use songs to teach numbers, the alphabet, body parts and other words requiring memorization.

Step 3: Use motions and gestures during the lesson to reinforce learning. Action further enhances the child's ability to
remember by adding a physical association to the word, and it helps small kids use up energy so they do not get fidgety or
distracted.

Step 4: Build an interactive environment for the children. "Transitions Abroad" advises teachers to: "Have them standing
up and sitting down, weave games and dramatic play and singing into your lessons. Have the children take turns helping
you prepare or carry out the activity or project." This helps the kids stay focused and offers additional opportunities for
language learning as they follow directions, learn the rules for games and communicate about the activities they are
doing.

Step 5: Ask the children to take charge by having them lead activities such as Pictionary, charades, and hangman, and
matching games to teach grammar, vocabulary and verb tenses. Allowing children to demonstrate their learning will build
confidence and give them real-life language skills. Team games build conversational skills as students communicate with
each other in the course of the game.

How to Teach Preschool Grammar

By David Stewart.

Between the ages of 2 and 4, children pick up vocabulary and sentence

construction skills by listening to people speak. They do not, however, have a
clear idea of the correct usage of words. The best way to teach such preschoolers
grammar is through the use of age-appropriate activities, such as nursery rhymes,
role play and storytelling. When using these activities, it is important to remember
that preschoolers have a very short attention span, and it is important to change
frequently between activities to keep them interested.

Instructions

1. Get children to act out different activities they perform at home, school, and play time. Ask them to name some things that
adults do. Using these examples, explain the concept of verbs as action words. Have one child perform an action, and ask
the other children to make simple sentences to express that action.

2. Use parts of speech in totally absurd ways. For example, say a sentence, such as: “Mary drank the doll with water.”
Children will naturally laugh aloud to imagine this ridiculous idea. Ask them for ideas on how to say the sentence correctly
and explain that it is equally correct to say: “Mary drank a glass or water,” or “Mary played with the doll.”

3. Bring flashcards with photos of different nouns. Tell children to say if the photo you hold up is a person, animal, place or
thing. For example, when you hold a flashcard with a dog, ask: “Is a dog a person, animal or thing?” When children have
learned to classify items in this manner, explain that the names of persons, places, animals and things are called nouns.

4. Browse the website of Songs for Teaching and find songs to teach children about sentences, nouns and adjectives.
Download the songs and play them in the classroom, and explain their meaning. Encourage children to memorize and
sing the songs.

5. Tell stories that are repetitive in nature, with a character saying the same sentence numerous times in different situations.
Use stories, such as “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” or “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.” When children hear
words repeated in a particular fashion, they get used to saying them in the grammatical fashion.

6. Correct grammar mistakes in an unobtrusive manner, without actively telling the child she is saying something wrong. For
example, if a child tells you: “My brother brings a dog home yesterday,” respond by saying: “Your brother brought a dog
home yesterday? How exciting!”
