CLAS 3P05 Roman Republican History

Learning Logs

What is the point of this assignment?


Learning Logs run in tandem with seminar discussions and are designed to give you the
opportunity to demonstrate your MCQ work more fully and promote writing skills in
preparation for your Research Paper.

Due date: Upload to SAKAI Drop Box within 48 hours of seminar.


Format: Use the template provided on p.2. Times New Roman 12-point font.
Length: 1000 words max (NB this does not include Extra Credit answers)
Late penalty: 10% per day. No assignment will be accepted after the following seminar (1
week).

What do I need to do?


Write up your seminar notes using the template provided to address all 5 parts of the MCQ for
the seminar reading (see MCQ Guidelines for writing prompts). You don’t have to give each part
equal attention (you could write five sentences for Part 1 and ten for Part 2) but you MUST
answer all 5 parts. Submissions that do not will be marked as “Incomplete” and returned to the
student for completion with late penalty applying (see above). Your answer should use full
sentences (not bullet points) and all citations should be properly referenced (see
SAKAI/resources/How to Cite a Classical Primary Source for how to cite ancient sources).

Grading Rubric
Learning Log (LL) entries are marked out of 50 with two optional extra credit sections worth 5
points each. Spelling and grammatical errors will receive a -0.25 penalty (-0.5 in the case of
proper nouns e.g. “Pompey”; -1.00 if the same error has already been noted in a previous LL
entry).

Each section section is graded on a scale of 1-10 under the following rubric:

9-10= LL entry demonstrates outstanding engagement with the reading in the form
of perceptive, well-expressed active critical thinking that makes connection to
other sources, scholarship and wider course content.
7-8= LL entry demonstrates good engagement the reading in the form of well-
expressed active critical thinking.
5-6= LL entry reflects a competent familiarity with the reading and understanding of
the principles, concepts, and/or course content under discussion.
3-4= LL entry engages with reading but demonstrates confused or incorrect grasp of
principles, concepts or course content under discussion, and/or basic factual
errors. Recommend meeting with Instructor to address issues.
1-2= LL entry shows minimal and inadequate engagement with reading.
Recommend student meeting with Instructor to develop improvement plan.
