As Chancellor of the University, it is a matter of
satisfaction for me to witness the developmental
journey of the University and its impact on medical and
technical education sector in the entire region.
The North Eastern State require rapid expansion in
opportunities for higher education. The Act East Policy
has underlined the need of expansion of higher
education facilities alongside physical infrastructure in
order to tap the immense potential the region has in
human resource. It is a matter of joy that the Sikkim
Manipal University has today established itself as a
institution of excellence when it comes to the higher
learning in the entire North Eastern region. I can relate
this accomplishment as the result of will and
determination of dedicated group of academic leaders
and the management of the institute since its inception.

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the portals
of this great Institution of learning, Sikkim Manipal
University (SMU).
SMU has been at the forefront of distance education
since 2001, through its Directorate of Distance Education
(SMU-DDE).
The current Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher
education in India, stands at 21.1%. The Government’s
objective has been to increase the GER to 30% by 2020.
To meet this goal, having good distance education
institutions is of paramount importance. From its
inception, SMU-DDE’s primary aim has been to provide
quality education to students on a distance mode. Also,
to encourage and support more students to have access
to distance education, we provide scholarships to
students from all backgrounds.
SMU-DDE offers career-oriented Programs, delivered
through self-learning study materials. In today’s digital
era, we endeavor to make it convenient for you through
the adoption of technology in every step of your journey
with us as a student. We understand the need to address
the different learning styles of students and have catered

The constituent units of Sikkim Manipal University are Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences
(SMIMS), Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT), Sikkim Manipal College of Physiotherapy (SMCPT),

CREDIT SYSTEM
The University follows the “Credit
System” for its programs. Each credit is
of 30 hours of study comprising all
learning activities viz. 19 hours of
Self-Study using Self Learning Material ;
3 hours of Contact program/Counselling
(Synchronous), 5 hours of online learning
activities (Asynchronous via EduNXT)
such as watching lecture videos,
attempting Quizzes and participation in
Discussion Board; and 3 hours of
preparation of Assignments. Thus, a
four-credit course require 120 Hrs.of
study time.

Self Learning Material (SLM), in print form, is the main source of learning for all programs of the
Directorate of Distance Education of the University. This is made available by the University to
all students after admission. The Directorate has developed its own SLM which helps students
to learn content in a phased manner with clearly stated objectives and learning outcomes.
The self-explanatory and self-contained SLM with in-built exercises to check the progress of
learning, forms the core of the student’s academic activity. It enables self-evaluation, thus
guiding each and every student to acquire the prescribed level of learning.

The University uses modular program structures.
All curricula are designed and scrutinized by experts to
