1. The two degree of freedom system of Figure 1a has a natural frequency of m corresponding
to a rotational mode and a natural frequency of m corresponding to transnational mode. A
block of mass m is attached to the mass center of the bar through the spring adding to a degree
of freedom.Determine k1 such that another degree of freedom of Figure 1b coincides with the
rotational degree of freedom. Determine the natural modes of the system.
2. Find the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the spring-mass system shown in Figure 2
where ki = k for i = 1; 2; 3; 4; m1 = m3 = m and m2 = 3m. Let k = 500 N/m and m = 2 kg.
Also nd the free-vibration response for the initial conditions x1 (0) = x3 (0) = 1, x2 (0) = 0 mm;
x_ i (0) = 0 for i = 1; 2; 3. Plot the mode shapes and response in MATLAB/SCILAB.
3. The spring mass system in Figure 3(a) has following system parameters: mi = 20 kg, ki = 10; 000
N/m and the damping ratio in each normal mode is given by i = 0:015, for i = 1; 2; 3. Two
separate excitation cases are given below:
(a) Masses and m2 are subjected to the harmonic forces F1 (t) = F2 (t) = F0 cos
t , where
m1
F0 = 450 N and
= 40 rad/s. Find the steady-state response using modal superposition.
(b) Mass m3 is subjected to a step force as shown in Figure 3(b). Find the response to the
step input using modal superposition.
For both the cases, use MATLAB/SCILAB to generate the response plots.

4. Determine the natural frequencies and normal modes of the printing machine problem (Q2
in Assignment 1). Assume CT 1 = CT 2 = CT 3 = 10 105 Nm/rad, CT 4 = 3:5 105 Nm/rad,
CT 5 = 4:2 105 Nm/rad; J1 = J2 = J3 = 3:5 kgm2 , J4 = 0:65 kgm2 , J5 = 2:5 kgm2 and J6 = 1:30
kgm2 . Also use rr34 = 5:12 and rr12 = 2:46 for your calculations. If a torque M (t) = M0 cos
t,
with M0 = 500 Nm and
= 180 rad/s is applied on the plate cylinder, nd the amplitude of
vibration of each cylinder. Assume the damping ratio = 0:04 for all modes.
