As long as you have good support that is ok. As for the
'topic sentence' you mention, that is not the topic
sentence. A paragraph must have a central topic, not
necessarily a topic sentence. The central topic of the
first paragraph is formal examinations (and it looks at
the pros and then a con which leads into the next
paragraph). The central topic of the next paragraph is
of course continual assessment. When you are taught
about 'topic sentences' as a beginner you are usually
told to place it at the beginning of a paragraph but,
although it often is, in reality with more complex writing
a paragaph may not even have one or it could be
elsewhere. A paragraph must though have a central
topic.

Not sure what you mean by 'f.e.'. But any tenses can
be used in an essay, it just depends on what your are
trying to express. I would agree though with your
teacher that the present simple is common because
you are discussing present day facts about the world,
and the present simple is usually used for this.

doubt whether the word "principle" is correct here. If it meant to
be "two major benefits", then the word "principal" should have
been used, not "principle". Am I right?
