CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background
Each and every together can function as determiners in front of the
singular noun, but each can also function as a pronoun. Both can sometimes mean
the same, but can also be different. Each and Every is a quantity statement. A
quantity statement precedes a noun. Some quantity information is only used with
countable noun, some only with uncountable noun, and some with nouns that can
be counted or cannot be counted.
The words each and every are used to indicate the single number of a noun
in English. Each and every is followed by singular count nouns, not plural nouns
or nouns that cannot be counted. Every or Each is a common grammar issue, even
for proficient writers, because let’s face it—they’re very similar words. Although
both words refer to something that is singular, each refers to an individual object
or person, while the term every refers to a group of objects or people lumped
together as one.

CHAPTER 2
DISCUSSION
2.1. Understanding
Every in the Indonesian language contains the meanings of each (person or
object)in a group of more than 2. If using the word “of” behind it then the noun in
the back of it should be in a plural or plural form and after every must be added
with the word “one”. If not using “of”, the noun behind every must be singular or
single. Each often emphasizes the members of a group individually, containing
the idea of “one by one”; or it leads to two (meaning “both”).

Each is a way of seeing the members of a group as individuals, while every is

a way of seeing a group as a series of members. These distributives can only be
used with countable nouns. They are normally used with singular nouns, and are
placed before the noun. In many cases, they are interchangeable.

2.2 Use "Every" and "Each"

Every or Each is a common grammar issue, even for proficient writers,
because let’s face it—they’re very similar words. Although both words refer to
something that is singular, each refers to an individual object or person, while the
term every refers to a group of objects or people lumped together as one.
Examples:
1. Each child received a present.
2. Every child received a present.
3. I gave each plant some water.
4. I gave every plant some water.

Each can also be used with plural nouns and pronouns but must be
followed by 'of'. Every cannot be used with plural nouns.
Examples :
1. Each of the children received a present.
2. I gave each of the plants some water.
3. He told each of us our jobs.
4. I gave each of them a kiss.
Every can express different points in a series, especially with time
expressions. Each works in the same way, but is less common.
Examples :
1. Every morning John goes jogging.
2. This magazine is published every week.
3. I have my coffee here every day.
4. I go visit my mother each week.
5. Each Monday, he buys a kilo of apples.

2.3 Differences in the Use of Each and Every

Each and Every basically has similar, similar, but sometimes not the same
meaning. Both are used to indicate quantity. Differences in the use of Each and
Every include:
a. Each is used when the speaker thinks of one person or one object at a
time. Every is used when the speaker interprets "all".
Example:
1. Each student has a schedule. =Has a schedule. Ririn has a
schedule. Tono has a schedule.
2. Every student has a schedule. = All of the students have schedules.
b. Each refers to two things or more objects / people, each of which is seen
one by one. Every refers to more than two things that are considered as
one unit or group and used to emphasize something.
c. Each one is used more for individuality and specific by mentioning one by
one. Instead, Every is used generally by seeing something or someone as
an individual or group.
Example:
1. Every woman is sensitive. That is, every woman (a group / all
women) has a sensitive nature
2. Each girl is sensitive. This sentence means that every woman
(one by one woman) has a sensitive nature.
3. Each can be used as a pronoun (pronoun in English), while Every
is not.
Examples of Differences in Using Each and Every in Sentences:
1) We read each of the two books.
2) They read every book in the library.
3) Each student must submit homework.
4) Each girl in the room has a beautiful dress.
5) Every woman likes flowers.
6) Every day is good day for us.
7) Mrs. Lily gave a present to each child.
8) Andra invited every member of the club.
9) It’s important for every student to have a book.
10) Each of participants has received an invitation.
