STOP BEING GULLIBLE, START BEING MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE

Journalism plays a big role in our society. The news stories that we read from newspapers,
we watch on television and we listen from the radio are products or outcomes from the activity or
job of journalism. It became part of our daily lives to be aware and to know what is happening in
our surroundings, in our country and in the world. Each one of us needs to be updated with the
reliable and factual pieces of information, but nowadays, fake news has been widespread
everywhere, especially that we are now in the 21st century.

As we observe from our social media, there were a lot of fabricated stories that have been
made, particularly about issues. When we read a news story from a facebook post, and we watch
the same news on a television and we listen it from a radio, the content was different. Due to the
different story content, many people confuse and some are giving violent reactions, especially
when the news story was all about a sensitive issue. We could not deny the fact that in today's
time, there were news collectors, news writers and news editors that were biased; even the news
broadcasters.

The fake news consists of deliberate disinformation or hoaxes spread through the use of
traditional media (both print and broadcast) or online social media. The false information was
often caused by the news reporters paying for sources and unethical practices. Digital news in
our today's era has brought back and increased the usage of fake news. The information was
often reverberated as misinformation in social media, but still finds its way to the media as well.
Fake news was often written and published usually with the intention to mislead in order to
damage a celebrity star, a politician or an agency. False information often uses sensationalist,
dishonest or outright fabricated headlines to get the attention of people and increase readership.
Some companies usually publish stories with unreliable and false contents that attract users'
benefits. At the same time, political campaigns are also spreading untruths, misinformation, mal-
information and misinformation.

These days, a range of factors are transforming the communications landscape and a lot
of people raising many questions about the service, quality impact and credibility of journalism.
The news writers, editors and reporters were criticized. Due to the widespread of fake news or
hoax information, there were more conflicts or issues arise in our society.

It is saddening and alarming that many people already became victims of fake news
proliferation due to the reason of being ignorant or unaware. But we, as concerned citizens of
this country, we can do something about this matter. Let us be more aware and more
knowledgeable about what is happening in our surroundings. Do not just be gullible by the pieces
of information we read, we watch and we listen. Open our eyes to see what is genuine. Open our
ears to hear what is true. And open our minds to know what is real. Do not lean on our little
knowledge, because that was dangerous. There was already a large number of fake news
victims, do not be one of them.

What do these results mean?

The indicator bars give a visual guide for the readability of the text. Red is a low readability
score. Green is easily readable.

Flesch Kincaid Reading Ease

Based on a 0-100 scale. A high score means the text is easier to read. Low scores suggest the
text is complicated to understand.

206.835 - 1.015 x (words/sentences) - 84.6 x (syllables/words)

A value between 60 and 80 should be easy for a 12 to 15 year old to understand.

Grade Level indicators

These equate the readability of the text to the US schools grade level system.

Flesch Kincaid Grade Level

0.39 x (words/sentences) + 11.8 x (syllables/words) - 15.59

Gunning Fog Score

0.4 x ( (words/sentences) + 100 x (complexWords/words) )

SMOG Index

1.0430 x sqrt( 30 x complexWords/sentences ) + 3.1291

Coleman Liau Index

5.89 x (characters/words) - 0.3 x (sentences/words) - 15.8

Automated Readability Index (ARI)

4.71 x (characters/words) + 0.5 x (words/sentences) - 21.43

Coleman Liau and ARI rely on counting characters, words and sentence. The other indices
consider number of syllables and complex words (polysyllabics - with 3 or more syllables) too.
Opinions vary on which type are the most accurate. It is more difficult to automate the counting
of syllable as the English language does not comply to strict standards!
