General information
The information published in this manual was up to date on printing.
However, we reserve the right to change without notice.

The PCA software is to be used with Microsoft® Windows® 2000, XP or Vista

(Ultimate / Home Premium) supporting USB ports.

NOTICE

In order to control the devices properly, it is essential to install the RCU on the
antenna and to connect all devices to the PCA before it is switched on.

NOTICE
A precondition for the proper control of the devices are correctly mounted
components.

Each RCU must be calibrated before the initial downtilt setting and after each
manual adjustment of the downtilt or after each dismantling of the RCU.
Non-compliance of this instruction may result in an undefined down-tilt setting.

NOTICE
The RCU being installed on the appropriate antenna is essential for a correct
RCU calibration.

If this is not observed, the calibration cannot be carried out correctly.

8
Introduction

1.3 Kathrein PCA Drivers Installation Guide for Windows 7
1.3.1 Introduction
The purpose of this application note is to provide users of Kathrein PCA with a
simple procedure for installing device drivers for Kathrein PCA devices under
Microsoft® Windows® 7.

1.3.2 Installing Drivers

To install drivers for a Kathrein PCA under Windows® 7, follow the instructions
below:

• Connect the device to a spare USB port on your PC.

• If no suitable driver is automatically found the described procedure should be
followed.
• Press the Windows start button to bring up the start menu and select “Control
Panel”.

17
1. USB port interface
• From the Control Panel window select “Device Manager”.

• In the Device Manager window there will be a device under “Other devices”
with a yellow warning symbol to indicate a problem e.g. no driver installed.

18
1. USB port interface
• Double click on the other device (KATHREIN PCA) to bring up the Properties
window.

• From the displayed menu select “Update Driver”.

• The following window displays the option for an automatic search or a manual
search:

• Select the second option to browse manually.

19
1. USB port interface
• In the address box put the exact location where the drivers are located. This
is normally on the CD delivered with your KATHREIN PCA. It is not necessar-
ily the exact same drive letter as shown in the screenshot.

• After entering the address select “Next” to start the installation.

20
1. USB port interface
• If you are certain of the source of the driver the warning can be ignored and
you can continue installation by selecting “Install this driver software anyway”.

• When the installation has finished a completion screen is displayed.

• Press “Close” to close this window.

21
1. USB port interface
• Press “Close” to close the Properties window and go back to the Device-Man-
ager Window.

22
1. USB port interface
• The Device Manager will still show a device under Other devices but in addi-
tion to this there is a new entry under USB Controller indicated in the screen-
shot above as the USB Serial Converter. This indicates the bus layer of the
driver is installed. Installing the virtual Com Port layer of the driver is almost a
repeat of the last few steps.

• Double click on the Other devices (USB Serial Port) to bring up the Properties
window as shown below.

• From the displayed menu select “Update Driver”.

23
1. USB port interface
• This then displays the option for an automatic search or a manual search.

• Select the second option to browse manually.

In the address box put the exact location where the drivers are located. This
is normally on the CD delivered with your PCA. It is not necessarily the exact
same drive letter as shown in the screenshot:

• After entering the address select “Next” to start the installation.

24
1. USB port interface
• When the installation is finished a completion screen is displayed:

• Note this screen also displays the COM post assigned to the device. Press
Close to close this window and go back to the Device Manager Window.

• This time the Device Manager does not have a USB Serial Port under Other
devices but shows entries under USB-Controller and Ports (COM & LPT). The
above screen shot displays a correct installation. The Device is now ready to
use on COM3.

NOTICE
Not all devices will install to COM3. The COM port allocation is determined by
the installation wizard on the basis of the next free com port as designated in
the PC registry.

25
2. PCA software installation
• To install the Kathrein PCA software open the ‘Install’ folder on the CD and
double click on ‘setup_PCA_V2-3-0.exe’.

3.2.2 Kathrein FlexRET
A Kathrein FlexRET can operate in multi-mode and single mode. The difference
in protocol modes is visible in the example below.

In multi-mode, the individual subunits are numbered.

In Single-RET-Mode each frequency band is shown colour coded.

The Single-RET-Mode is set ex factory.

3. PCA software description
3.2.2.1 View detail window Kathrein FlexRET
Antennas with FlexRET have an RFID tag with the antenna configuration data.
The Flexret reads this data directly. It must still be scanned by the RCU.

When the FlexRET has successfully read the data from the antenna RFID tag,
the fields for ‘Select Antenna Type’ and ‘Antenna Serial Number’ are written,
this data cannot be changed.

In the detailed view these fields are inactive.

3.2.2.2 FlexRET Format conversion

In this dialog box you can change the mode format. Using the ‘Set Mode’ switch
confirms the selected mode.

NOTICE

If the FlexRET is changed from single-mode to multi-mode or from multi-mode

to single-mode, a new device scan must be performed.

3.2.3 View detail window Kathrein RFID-RCU
If the RFID-RCU 86010148V01 is used together with an antenna providing a
RFID-tag in the spindle, the antenna configuration data can be read out auto-
matically.
If these fields have been read correctly the fields for ‘Select Antenna Type’
and ‘Antenna Serial Number’ are written, this data cannot be changed. In the
detailed view these fields are inactive.

Attention! The downloads for the boot loader and firmware are executed in sequential and
separately.

• Please consider the following:

The first four digits (e.g. 01.01) of the boot loader version number must
comply with the firmware version number.

NOTICE
The file ‘devdata.bin’ is located in the PCA folder.
You must update this file for new antennas. You can download it from the
customer portal on our homepage: www.kathrein.de.
