Service ROW Grading – Topsoil Stripping
General Description
This is the process of leveling the surface of the ROW to a consistent grade to permit
ease of construction and so the pipeline has as few bends as possible to accommodate
undulating terrain.
Graded areas may be sloped away from the centre to permit water to run off after rain
storms.
This process also prevents water from collecting in low lying areas causing mobile
equipment to bog down in mud and slow the progress of construction.
2
Service Line Locating
General Description
Line locating is an underground pipe and utility line locating service that can involve an
array of techniques to determine precise location and render this on a GPS map.
Others techniques involve electric AC and DC current detection.
Location can also be determined using ultrasonic or low frequency sound waves.
With modern technology, pipe and utility lines can be mapped for location, length and
depth and in 3D imagery.
3
Service Equipment & Field Hauling
General Description
Equipment and field hauling involves transportation of equipment, pre-fabricated
components, construction material and goods from source to and from field sites
where they are needed.
Such hauling may involve light to heavy hauling using a wide range of transportation
equipment suitable for both off road and on road maneuvering.
Trucks and trailers may require winches and/or cranes.
Trucks and trailers may require special features to make them environmentally
friendly, such as tire pressure control sensors and floatation tires.
When is this Service Required? During pre-construction, construction and post-construction phases.

Service - Prime Contract Trench Material Crushing/Backfilling
General Description
This is the process of crushing material excavated from the trench into fine aggregate
and placing it back in the trench to serve as padding for the bottom of the pipe.
Equipment is available in varying sizes depending on the size of the trench and the
kind of material excavated.
Some equipment can crush stones up to 16” in diameter.
This procedure is deployed to help protect the pipe and its coating as the pipe will be
resting on this material during its lifetime.
5
Service Pipe Transporting to Site
General Description
This is the process of getting the pipe to the construction site, often across varying
road surfaces and varying distances.
May involve transporting pipe from nearby pipe stockyards, rail yards or direct from
the regional distributor or mill.
May involve transporting pipe from coating factory.
Different pipe diameters may require different truck/trailer combinations and impact
the number of truck/trailer combinations required to deliver the pipe according to
precise schedules.
Involves handling and securing the pipe in such a manner as not to damage the pipe
or its coating during transporting it to the site.
6
Service – Prime Contract Pipe Bending
General Description
Often during construction of the pipeline there are variations in the contour of the
land and terrain conditions that require bending of the pipe to avoid costly re-
contouring of the land.
Bending of the pipe, especially large diameter pipe requires special machines that can
bend the pipe without altering its circular profile.
Skilled technicians can bend pipe to a certain degree quickly and efficiently on site
without damaging the pipe, but large bends (elbows) usually require fabrication in
factory settings.
7
Service – Prime Contract Pipe Welding
General Description
Specialized welding companies are required to weld together the pipeline’s pipe as
the pipeline is constructed in the field.
Some elbows and valve joints can be welded off site in a controlled shop setting and
later shipped to the construction site for insertion in the pipeline.
Welding companies must be able to design and provide welding procedure
specifications to any of the following codes and standards:

Service – Prime Contract Coating the Pipe Welds
General Description
Pipeline pipe is usually coated inside and out to prevent corrosion from throughput
and ground water, respectfully.
Coating composition varies on what’s being put through the pipe and the adverse
environmental conditions the pipe needs to withstand.
Pipeline pipe arrives at the construction site pre-coated and therefore needs to be
handled carefully to avoid being damaged.
Welding the pipe together may require stripping away the coating at pipe ends and re-
coating the welded joints at the construction site.
It takes very specialized equipment and skilled technicians to perform coating
procedures on site.
Joints are typically sandblasted just prior to preheating and coating.
9
Service – Prime Contract Positioning the Pipe in the Trench
General Description
This is the delicate process of lowering a large length of welded pipe into the trench
using a series of side boom dozers synchronized to lay the pipe together at the same
time so as not to overly bend the pipe or damage the pipe by dropping it.
The process also needs to be orchestrated properly so that the heavy length of pipe
does not pull lifting equipment into the trench on top of the pipe.
10
Service – Prime Contract Horizontal Drilling
General Description
This is the process of boring a whole under a river for the pipe to be pulled through as
opposed to laying the pipe in a trench on the river bottom or suspending it over the
river crossing using an existing bridge or cable system, or as opposed to tunneling using
a tunneling machine.
Horizontal drilling uses horizontal drilling machines that are assisted by pressurized
water and vacuum suction in order to pulverize the earth and remove mud and debris.
Horizontal drilling is often done in concert with hydrovac and vac trucks.
11
Service Installing Temporary Bridges/Swamp Mats
General Description
This is the service of supplying, hauling and installing temporary bridges and platforms
across creeks, swamps and bogs to enable heavy equipment to cross or work while
mitigating damage to the environment.
Bridge and platforms are usually sectional and made of lightweight, yet strong
materials so they don’t sink and can be easily transported to and from remote sites.
12
Service Preparing Mainline Valve Site
General Description
Preparing a mainline valve site involves clearing, brushing, grading and compacting the
location where the valve is to be installed.
Since valves may be located at remote locations along the pipeline, this could also
involve construction of an access road.

Service Performing Civil Work at Pump Station Site
General Description
This is the process of developing the land upon which the pump station will be
situated and installing the footings, piles, foundations, concrete pads, drainage
systems, underground electrical conduits, underground sewage pipes, etc. in
preparation for facilities construction.
Civil contractors usually provide this kind of service to exact engineering standards and
subcontract out portions to qualified subcontractors, such as pile driving, concrete
pouring, excavating, etc.
16
Supply Ready Mix Concrete
General Description
Major pipeline construction projects require lots of concrete in liquid form to be
available to form into pillars, piles, retaining walls, pads, slabs, pipe weights, walls, etc.,
which comes either from cement transport trucks or mobile batch plants located
somewhere on or near the construction site.
Suppliers need to be qualified in the production of ready mix concrete to exact
standards required and have the necessary knowhow to solve problems as they arise
due to climate or environmental conditions.
Suppliers must be capable of supplying large orders for ready mix concrete.
17
Supply Pumps and Electric Motors
General Description
Major pipeline projects require the installation of pumps at various stages along the
pipeline to keep the oil or liquid in motion at speeds of about 1 to 6 meters per second.
Pumps are usually housed in permanent facilities referred to as pump stations, which
may contain several pumps with electric motors operating in tandem.
The number of pump stations to be installed and location is defined by the topography
of the terrain, the type of product being transported, or operational conditions of the
network.
Pumps with electric motors are ordered according to horsepower, flow rate, outlet
pressure, inlet suction or the number of feet or meters the pump can raise or lower a
column of water at atmospheric pressure.
Most pumps deployed on oil pipelines are centrifugal pumps.
Electric motors can range up to 6,500 hp (or higher where feasible or available).

Supply Structural Steel
General Description
Pipeline facilities requiring process piping solutions, pumps, compressors, etc. often
need structural steel configurations to serve as elevated platforms, frames, pillars, etc.
to support them and house them during their operation.
Structural steel frame buildings are often required along with external cladding and
roofing to protect operational equipment and personnel from the elements in harsh
climates.
Enbridge often contracts for process piping and structural steel solutions together in
one package with one supplier.
19
Service – Prime Contract Installing Electrical/Electrical Inspection
General Description
Major pipeline projects involve the installation of electrical systems with which to
power pumps, actuators, controls and control rooms at pump stations and remote
electrical systems (some solar systems) to power monitoring and security equipment.
Larger projects will require electrical systems engineering as well as the design and
installation of power block and transformer systems.
Smaller projects may only require journeymen electricians.
Enbridge usually contracts this work out through general contractors who in turn sub it
out to specialized subcontractors.
Contractors may also be required to provide inspection services.
20
Supply Installing Flanges & Fittings
General Description
Usually pipes come in tubular form and have to be either welded together or bolted
together with the use of welded on flanges.
Sometimes pipe configurations require tight bends or need to split in two directions
requiring elbow or T-joints. These joints or “fittings” can be welded or bolted to pipe
in either a manufacturing facility or on site.
They can be manufactured in a plant and then either welded on or bolted onto piping
systems on site.
Joints have to be hydro tested to make sure the welds and seals are adequate for the
job intended.
