Here is a list of 570 words often used in English writing. Professors searched many English books,
magazines and other literature to find words that are the most commonly used. No surprise, you will
find many of these words in your IELTS exam. Find this list of words below.

To get high scores on the IELTS exam it is very important that you can understand AND use these
words. You must be able to comprehend these words in the Listening Section and Reading Section of
IELTS. As well, you must be able to use these words in the Writing and Speaking Sections. Follow
the practice instructions and you can get high scores the next time you sit the IELTS exam.

1. You need a notebook and three color pens or pencils (ex. Blue, Red and Black)

2. Each day choose five words from the list. ***Start with #1 (highest frequency words) and work
towards #10. *Remember, even #10 words are found often in English.

3. Write down the definition of the word first:
Ex. Analyse, an·a·lyze (verb): examine methodically and in detail the constitution or structure of
(something, especially information), typically for purposes of explanation and interpretation.

4. Next write a compound or complex sentence using the word. Use red to write the word (If you do
not know compound and complex sentences, review this in your ‘Bonus Writing’ section of
your course in your ‘My Student Account’
a. Make sure to include yourself or someone you know in the sentence, this helps your memory.
b. Make sure to make the sentence unique, interesting, funny, sad, scary, etc.
Ex. I had to analyse the spider that bit me because it looked very dangerous.

5. Two days later, paraphrase the sentence you wrote and keep the same vocabulary in the sentence.
Use a different color for this.
Ex. Since the spider that bit me appeared poisonous, I needed to analyse it.

6. Make sure to continue doing this until your IELTS exam. AND make sure to read your sentences
and check for mistakes.
