Assignment 2

September 4, 2017

1. Two parti les of masses m1 and m2 are lo ated on a fri tionless double in line and
onne ted by an inextensible massless string passing over a smooth peg. Use the prin iple
of virtual work to show that for equilibrium, we must have:
sin α1 m1
=
sin α2 m2
where α1 and α2 are the angles of in line.

2. If L is the Lagrangian of a system of n degrees of freedom satisfying Lagrange's

equation. Show by dire t substitution that
dF (q1 , q2 , ....t)
L′ = L +
dt
also satises Lagrange's equation, where F is any arbitrary, but dierentiable fun tion
of its arguments.

3. Find the dierential equations of motion for a spheri al pendulum of length l, using
the Lagrangian method.

4. A bead slides on a smooth rod whi h is rotating about one end in a verti al plane
with uniform angular velo ity ω . Show that the equation of motion is ẍ = rω 2 −g sin(ωt).

5. Given a mass spring system onsisting of a mass M and a linear spring stiness K .
Find the equation of motion using the Hamiltonian pro edure.

6. A parti le of mass M2 sliding down a smooth in lined plane of mass M1 whi h is itself,
free to slide on a smooth horzontal surfa e. Derive the equations of the body and the

1
in lined plane using Lagrangian dynami s.

7. Cal ulate the Possions bra teks x, px Lx , Ly , where Lx

and and Ly are the x− and y−
omponents of angular momentum respe tively. px is the x− omponent of momentum.

8. Given a onservative system with

1
T = (q12 + q22 )(q˙1 2 + q˙2 2 )
2
and
k
V = k>0
(q12 + q22 )
where q1 and q2 are generalized oordinates. (a) Write the Lagrangian of the system. (b)

Find the anoni al momenta p1 and p2 of the system. ( ) Write the Hamiltonian of the

system. (d) Write equations of motion using Hamilton's equations.
