Since Francisco Engracio came from a privileged family, he had a good education which

was started in Latin School in Biñan and afterwards he attended the college of san juan in manila. In
1948, Francisco married Teodora Alonso who belonged to one of the wealthiest families in Manila.
Teodora's father was a member of Spanish cortes or the legislative body of Spain. Rizal describe her
mother as "a woman of more than ordinary culture" and that she is "a mathematician and has read
many books". Through Francisco and Teodora's industry and hardwork their family became a prominent
member of the principalia or the one rulling and they are usually educated and they are the upper class
in Spanish Colonial Philippine. Their houses was one of the concrete houses built in town. Francisco and
Teodora has 11 children consisting of 2 boys and 9 girls:

 Saturnina (1850-1913)-was the eldest sister of Jose Rizal. She had five children
together with her husband Manuel T. Hidalgo and known for being called "neneng".
She stand as a second mother to rizal and helps in financing the study of rizal.
 Paciano- aka "Lolo Ciano" was the only brother of Jose Rizal and the second among
the 11 children. He studied in Binan later attending school at the Colegio de San Jose
in Manila. After the execution of his brother, he joined in the Philippine Revolution
where he rose up to the ranks of a General. Fr. Jose Burgos also became his teacher
and his friend. He later married Severina Decena of Los Banos and had two children
of which one died at an early age. Paciano passed away when he was 79 years old
because of tuberculosis.
 Narcisa (1852-1939) or simply ‘Sisa’ was the third child in the family. Like Saturnina,
Narcisa helped in financing Rizal’s studies in Europe, even pawning her jewelry and
peddling her clothes if needed. all of the poems of the national hero. Narcisa was
perhaps the most hospitable among the siblings. When Don Francisco and Doña
Teodora were driven out of their house in Calamba, Narcisa took them in her house
including Josephine Bracken who is Rizal's girlfriend. Sisa married Antonino Lopez, a
teacher and musician from Morong, Rizal.
 Olympia (1855-1887)- She married Silvestre Ubaldo who is a telegraph operator in
Manila and together they had three children. She died in 1887 when she was only 32
years old from giving birth.
 Lucia (18557- 1919)-She married Mariano Herbosa and had 5 children together. In
1889 Mariano died due to cholera but was denied or refused a Catholic burial for not
going to confession since his marriage to Lucia.
 Maria (1859-1945)- She married Daniel Faustino Cruz of Binan, Laguna and together
they had 5 children. Mauricio Cruz, one of Maria's children became a student of Jose
Rizal in Dapitan and was known to be one of his uncle's favorites. Maria was a known
recipient of many od Jose's letters during his lifetime. Maria died in 1945.
 Jose Rizal (1861-1896)- The second son and the seventh child. He was executed by
the Spaniards on December 30,1896.
 Concepcion (1862-1865)- also called ‘Concha’ by her siblings, she was the eight child
of the Rizal family. She died at the age of three. Of his sisters, it is said that Pepe
loved most the little Concha who was a year younger than him. Jose played games
and shared children stories with her, and from her he felt the beauty of sisterly love.
When Concha died of sickness in 1865, Jose mournfully wept at losing her. He later
wrote in his memoir, “When I was four years old, I lost my little sister Concha, and
then for the first time I shed tears caused by love and grief.”
 Josefa (1865-1945)- Josefa Rizal was nicknamed Panggoy in the family. Despite
suffering from epilepsy, she joined and was an active member of the Katipunan. She
died a spinster.
 Trinidad (1868-1951)- she is also known as "trining" and she remained unmarried
and lived together with her sister Josefa. Trinidad was the one who recieved an
alcohol lamp from brother Jose, in which he secretly hid the "Last Farewell" better
known as "Mi Ultimos Adios," a poem Rizal wrote on the eve of his death in 1896.
Trinidad died in 1951, outliving all her siblings.
 Soledad (1870-1929)- Also called ‘Choleng,’ Soledad Rizal (1870-1929) was the
youngest child of the Rizal family. Being a teacher, she was arguably the best
educated among Rizal’s sisters. She married to Pantaleon Quintero of Calamba
without their parents’ consent.
