What is Gymnastic?

Gymnastics is a sport that requires balance, strength, flexibility, agility, coordination, and endurance.
The movements involved in gymnastics contribute to the development of the arms, legs, shoulders, back,
chest and abdominal muscle groups. Alertness, precision, daring, self-confidence and self-discipline are
mental traits that can also be developed through gymnastics. Gymnastics evolved from exercises used by
the Ancient Greeks that included skills for mounting and dismounting a horse, and from circus
performance skills.

Objectives of Gymnastics

Gymnastics benefit a person in many ways. This is not a form of physical exercise, it makes a person
develop a positive attitude towards life. These are some of the basic objectives of gymnastics.

Professionals training in gymnastics will help a person develop the strength of the body. The eye and
foot coordination improve with this form of sport. Gymnastics also help a person to develop a good
posture.. This is very important from the health perspective.

A person can also develop his/her sense of rhythm and coordination. This is through various musical
pieces played during performance. The musical compositions can be of varying beats. A gymnast also
develops a sense of balance and grace with time.

Yet another objective of gymnastics is to develop a person’s memory. The new concepts and
techniques being introduced helps a person retain thoughts and also exercise one’s thinking capabilities.

Gymnastics helps a person to hone social skills. Due to this sports, a gymnastics are introduced to
people from different age groups and they also learn to interact with their teachers. This makes them
earn an experience of group interaction from an early age. These skills help them their personal life as
well.

Phases of Gymnastics

All gymnastics workouts should begin with a warm-up routine. Before advancing to stretches,
gymnasts of the United States National Team jump rope or run in place for 5 minutes. They then perform
a variety of head and wrists rolls, arm swings, shoulder circles and other movements that loosen the
muscles and joints. During the flexibility phase, gymnasts stretch their hamstring, quads and other
muscles, and they practice their splits and back bridges. Strength-training exercises focus on developing
lean, strong muscles. Crunches and V-ups work the abdominal muscles, while squats and jumps build leg
strength. Even the fingers and the toes must be strengthened for bar and balance beam work. Only after
working on strength and flexibility do gymnasts being practicing their skills. Men train for vault, parallel
bars, horizontal bar, pommel horse, still rings and floor exercises. Women train for vault, balance beam,
floor exercises and uneven bars. Dance training is considered valuable for female gymnasts. Not only does
it help improve grace and balance, but it is also an integral part of the women floor exercise and balance
beam routines.
