SESSION GUIDE

A & E Secondary

I. OBJECTIVES
Through the use of the materials, the students will be able to:
a. Understand how to add whole numbers, decimal numbers and fraction and mixed
numbers;
b. Identify whole numbers, decimal numbers and fraction and mixed numbers and;
c. Use one of the basic operational in mathematics, the addition.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic: Addition ( whole numbers, decimal numbers and fraction and mixed numbers )
B. References: Internet

III. MATERIALS
Board
Chalk

IV. LEARNING PROCEDURES

A. Preliminary
1. Prayer
2. Attendance
3. Recall
-What was our topic last week?

B. Activity

Check these vocabulary words below. Then identify what are the key points of Addition and
encircle it.

Minus Add Times

Plus Subtract Share

Total Product Sum

Multiply
C. Abstract (Lesson Proper)

Addition is simply the combination of distinct sets of like entities (and we must stress the
word like). Is adding the two or more numbers. It can be whole numbers, decimal numbers and
fraction and mixed numbers.

Examples: Adding a whole numbers:

19, 505 ~ addend

+ 3, 895 ~ addend
23, 400 ~ sum

Key points: sum, total, increase, plus

Addition is commutative; we can add two summands in any order and always get the same
result. Following our example,

4+5=9

5+4=9

Adding decimal numbers, it is simply add the number aligned with the point.

Examples : 0.003 + 0.105 = 0.108

Adding fractions and mixed numbers:

a. Similar fractions
2/4 + ¾ = ?
(In fractions, the denominator should have same value to be directly add.)
2/4 + ¾ = 5/4 or 1 1/4

b. Dissimilar fractions
3/2 + 5/6 = ?
(if the fractions have different denominators, get the less common denominator or LCD.)
2, 4, 6, 8, 10
6, 12, 18
So the LCD is number 6. Then,

3/2 = 9/6
+ 5/6 = 5/6
14/6 or 7/3 or 2 1/3
To make 14/6 into a simpler form, know their divisible or common factor:
6 = 2*3
14 = 2*7
Their common factor is 2.

c. Mixed numbers
- has a two parts; a whole no. part and a fractional part.

Example: adding whole number and fraction number:

5 + 3/8 = 5 3/8 from 43/8

Adding mixed numbers and fractions with similar denominator:

3 2/7 + 3/7 = 3 5/7

Adding mixed numbers and fractions with dissimilar denominator:

5 ½ + 1/3 = ? Find the LCD. The LCD is number 6.
5 ½ = 5 3/6
+ 1/3 = 2/6
5 5/6

V. EVALUATION
