CHAPTER I

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Introduction

For a long time, sports have been viewed as a way to stay healthy and in

shape, but their importance goes much further. Playing sports teaches life

lessons like discipline, responsibility, self-confidence, accountability, and

teamwork. Playing sports helps your brain grow and makes it work better.

For the students, exercising is a great way to get out of the stressful

college life that is all about homework, presentations, and group projects. Playing

sports helps students relax and reduce their anxiety. Health care professionals

recommend physical activity as a key ingredient to any stress-management

activity.

Playing college sports has some serious benefits. Besides just being fun,

sports can help you perform better in school, relax more and worry less, deal with

setbacks, work better with others and increase your energy — all of which helps

you balance school and everything else going on in your life. – (Amir Ianis

KHELIL ’15 MS)

Sports forms an aspect of physical education. These are activities done for

enjoyment during leisure hours and they involve competition. Institutions with

good sports program attract more enrollees than similar institution that do not

participate in sports competition. The existence of sports facilities and equipment

is of vital importance in the conduct of physical education, intramural sports and

2

other sports programs. Sports facilities connote permanent structures built for

sporting activities such as athletic track, stadia, basketball court, lawn tennis

courts, squash court, gymnasium, among others. Sports equipment on the other

hand refer to those disposal items used in sports such as horizontal bars, weight

lifting materials, basketball posts, hockey posts, among others. (Ogundairo 2010)

The World Health Organization highlighted that schools have a significant

contribution to make in effecting an improvement in students’ health and

behaviour. Parallel to this, Armstrong and McManus found that managers of

physical education departments considered that health-related fitness "was the

second most important objective of physical education" with happiness of

students rated as their prime objective. Martens has strongly emphasized that

practitioners’ major aim should be to "turn young people on to physical activity for

a lifetime" Alexandrov’s findings, meanwhile, confirmed the statistically significant

positive effects physical education has on blood cholesterol, thereby, reducing

blood pressure and heart diseases, while Strong et al. argue that as school

becomes increasingly the center for promoting physical activities, physical

education has an important role in improving psychological health and mood, and

in reducing blood pressure and thereby preventing or reducing various diseases.

Universities or Colleges in Region 1 uses it sports program to create

impact and to affect the decisions of the enrollees. Virgen Milagrosa University

Foundation (VMUF) is one of the institutions that has sports programs and also

participates in sports competition. Sport facilities are present but maintenance to

those facilities was not fully implemented. Sports equipment are also in poor

state and inadequate.

The institution provides athletic grants or financial support to its student

athletes. These athletes will compete not only in the regional but also in the

national games. They also help define and promote their institutional identity by

creating legacies and bagging medals for their school.

As former student-athlete, it was noted that students from elementary to

graduate school are participating in sports activities. Despite the presence of

sports program and achievements from various athletic events, the institution is

still lacking in sports facilities and equipment to fully implement its sports

program. It is for this reason that the proponent arrived at the idea on enhancing

the VMUF sports program through its sports facilities and equipment. This

proposal may help the institution in:

1. Improving the facilities and equipment.

2. Implementing its sports program.

3. Looking and helping potential athletes.

4. Motivating student to become fit.

5. Increasing enrollees.

6. Increasing engagement to be a sports competition venue.

Moreover, the proposal will not only be for the benefit of the students but

also to the community near VMUF.

Vision

To be the best provider of competence and excellence in sports in Region

One.

Mission

To help students to balance academe and sports by enhancing sports

program.

Project background

The researcher who came from a family of farmer was once an athletic

scholar of VMUF who decided to take up Bachelor of Science in Accountancy.

Despite the time constraint between academic and sports, he still managed to

finish his Degree.

As a former student athlete, he used the sports facilities and equipment of

his Alma Mater and summed up that those facilities are not in good condition and

equipment are in poor state thereby trainings or practices were reduced and

sometimes made impossible. As a result, the idea of enhancing sports program

was formed. Its goal is to provide students with standard sports venue for playing

and for relaxing.

Project profile

The proposed study on improving sports facilities and equipment will

enhance the quality of sports in VMUF, and also to attract student athletes to

VMUF, an aspect of the new strategy. VMUF hopes to place more emphasis on

attracting student athletes, providing them with better healthcare,

accommodation, and catering, as well as tempting scholarship packages. The

study shall be entitled “Feasibility Study on Promoting Virgen Milagrosa

University Foundation through Improvement of Sports Facilities”. The

proposed study can help VMUF to be the venue of different sports event which

can give additional income to the institution.

Objectives of the study

The primary objective of the study is to determine the feasibility to

enhance its sports program through sports facilities and equipment and giving

athletic grants or scholarship to attract more students.

With regard to the secondary objectives, they are as follows:

1. To identify sports facilities and equipment available.

2. To identify sports facilities and equipment to be added.

3. To identify sports facilities for repairs.

4. To identify ways to maintain the condition of the sports facilities and

equipment.

5. To identify potential market.

6. To determine existing competitors.

7. To analyze the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the

proposed study; and

8. To analyze the different aspects of the proposed study such as

marketing, technical, management, financial and socio-economic.

Methodology

Methodology refers to the method and procedures that will be adopted in

the conduct of the study. It discusses the method of research to be used, the

data gathering instrument, administration of the instrument and statistical

treatment of data.

Research design

This type of research describes what exists and may help to uncover new

facts and meaning. The purpose of descriptive research is to, observe, describe,

document aspects of a situation as it naturally occurs. (Polit & Hungler 1999)

The research design of the study is a survey design. The researched was

designed that it captures the true situation on ground and permits a clear

interpretation and findings. In this study, the researcher is aware of the conditions

of the facilities and equipment of VMUF, the concerns of the athletes and

experiences of the students that can be used in the possibility of enhancing

sports program through sports facilities and equipment to attract more students.

Instrumentation and data gathering

The instrument of data collection for the study includes the following:

1. Questionnaire

The researcher designed questionnaire that would be used to find out

students who used to play sports, does sports facilities and equipment

affect their decision in choosing their schools, the satisfaction level of

VMUF students on current sports program and sports facilities and

equipment, and the recommendations.

The respondents for the study are students from different Senior High

Schools within Pangasinan. They are chosen randomly based on the

population of the Senior High School students from each school

selected including VMUF.

2. Interviews

An oral interview was held with some staff of the school especially

those in sports department. The method that was adopted during the

interview was discussion approach.

Interview is conducted to determine the concerns of the school which

includes the facilities that needs to be repaired, improvements that

should be undertaken, the maintenance required for each facility and

the equipment that should be purchased.

3. Personal Observations

Personal observation was carried out by the researcher in order to fully

understand the idea of the topic under study.

In connection with the interview to be conducted, data gathered will be

confirmed through observations. The facilities that need to be

addressed and the potential areas where new facilities can be

constructed.

GRADUATE SCHOOL

The distribution and collection of the questionnaire lasted for 5 days. A

total of 100 questionnaires were answered. The researcher, with the permission

of the respondents themselves, administered the questionnaire to them. The

respondents were graduating students from senior high school and college

students.

Interviews were conducted personally and discussions were noted.

Question includes the current conditions of the facilities and equipment, the

concerns of the athletes and their recommendations.

The necessary data were gathered and the accumulated data from the

analysis of the responses on the questionnaires distributed were tallied,

tabulated and collated using appropriate statistical tools.

The identities of the respondents were kept confidential as stated in the

questionnaires distributed.

Tools for data analysis

The researcher had decided to prepare 100 survey questionnaires which were

distributed to the respondents. Item analysis was used to analyze survey data.

MARKETING ASPECT

Marketing is a very important aspect in business since it contributes

greatly to the success of the organization. VMUF aims to increase its enrollees

by enhancing its resources. One of its potential front liners to its market is its

sports facilities.

The target market is the students from senior high school of different

schools in San Carlos City in order to provide them the sports facilities that they

need.

Description of the study

The study shall be entitled “Feasibility Study on Promoting Virgen

Milagrosa University Foundation through Improvement of its Sports Facilities”

The proponent chose the study to provide the needs of the students in

relation to sporting activities. The recommended improvements will be in

coordination with the Management, the sports program coordinator, the

marketing and communications department, and the head of Maintenance and

Engineering Department.

Promotional strategies

Contests or Competitions in the field of sports are a frequently used

promotional strategy. Many contests do not even require a purchase. People like

to win prizes. Winning in such competitions can bring attention without company

overtness

Scholarship grants as part of promotional strategies persuades student to

enroll and avail the benefit that helps increase enrollees.

School to school and inter-school orientation also provides knowledge to

students about the benefits provided by VMUF.

There is a need to post tarpaulins inside VMUF campus and of course

through social media and word of mouth which are very powerful tools in the

advertisement of any business.

SWOT Analysis

The SWOT Analysis provides information on the strengths and weaknesses of

VMUF in connection to its sports facilities as well as the opportunities and threats

that exist in the environment. This analysis gives insights relative to the areas to

be leveraged and points out where it must be improved within the company,

industry and market.

CHAPTER VII

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Sports have become an integral part in any community, be it barangays,

towns or cities and most especially in schools. Sports have become a source of

recreation and entertainment for families, friends and colleagues. Not only as a

source of enjoyment, sports have been proven to reduce or prevent diseases. It

has also shown increased physical and mental capabilities to those who have

been active in sports. Competitions are always held to show off the results of

training undergone by the players bringing honor to the community or school

where a participant may win.

Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation (VMUF) has been a home for

anyone who loves sports. They have the facilities to cater many sports activities,

however these facilities are already old and not in good condition, that now

needs repairs and improvement. With the move to further improve the current

condition of the sports facilities of the school, the study also aims to encourage

students to pursue their dreams in VMUF.

Aside from the quality of education a school can bring to its students.

Engagement to extracurricular activities specially sports has become a factor in

choosing the perfect school a student may enter in. With the positive responses

from the students, VMUF was chosen as one of the schools they would want to

enter into, all the more once the sports facilities are improved.

For every improvement to be made, with the hope of increasing income,

an equivalent investment is always required. Repairs of sports facilities,

construction of covered court, purchase of new equipment and materials and

hiring of additional employees is needed to materialize the proposed

improvement.

Expected income cannot occur, even with the improvements made,

without the support from the management. Continuous involvement and

commitment is needed. Policies and standards should be established and

discipline be always in mind.

The efforts of the management can only be seen through the financial

statements. The questions on – how well the management performed; how much

income was earned; how long the investments will return to the institution – will

be answered. Where the financial statements are the culmination of the

performance and position of an organization.

Based on the study, the project proposed is feasible to succeed.

Investment to this project will provide additional income to the institution. It also

entails positive reinforcement to the students, teachers and the community with

the improved and added sports facilities to the school.

At the end of five years, the proponent of the study recommends the

following improvement scheme for the other sports facilities of the school. This

would also open up a platform for further studies of the scheme recommended:

1. Additional Equipment for Athletics Event

2. Additional Improvement of Courts
