Handouts for Instruction

(8) Procedures:
Hello class, today we will begin our group project! Before I begin explaining how we are going
to do this, I am going to give you guys a handout with the instructions detailed so you do not
forget.
Students will be seated in six groups with five students in each group (this is how the
classroom seating arrangement is set up, so the students will already be in their indicated
groups for the project).
Begin handing out instruction sheet to every student.
Place Instruction Sheet on the Smart Board as well so that you can use it for reference
when giving instructions.
Explain to students that this project is about connecting with their classmates and
connecting them to the world around them. They will be working in groups to create
presentations about a country of their group choice and the types of traditions and customs
that are used or embraced in that country.
This week you will all be working together in your groups to create presentations about a
specific country that will be drawn from a hat. Each of you will have your own section in the
presentation, and when the due date comes up you will all go up in front of the class and present
your country and section. Meaning each one of you will have to speak and explain your section
of the presentation to the class.
Ask if this makes sense to students, and for students to hold any other questions until
instructions are done.
Once again, each student must create their own section for the project. In other words, five
sections are needed for the presentation.
Each section must have:
2 paragraphs summarizing the student’s findings,
And a picture or painting, or even model of what the students encountered as well.
Students must not have similar topics within their sections, every section must be unique.
Some examples of ideas students can use in their sections include:
Food, music, dancing, language, history, clothing, and so forth.
We will be using this week to work on this project in class, and then next week your
presentations will begin. I want each one of you to dedicate your time to finding the best
information possible and making sure that your section of the presentation is well written. That
being said, this is the schedule for this week for the project.
Note*: This will look different on the student’s handouts, this is for reference while
explaining to class.
Monday (Today): Students will pick country by drawing out of a hat and start coming up
with ideas for topics and what to write about. There is a class hat used for drawing names
for prizes and such, but in this case you will take a piece of paper and cut it up into six
pieces and write these countries down: Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, and Japan.
Once you finish writing the countries down, fold them and place them into the class hat.
Then go around group by group and draw one country for each. Do not let any student’s
draw, as this may cause some fighting between those who want to draw for their group. So
it is better to pick from the hat yourself. Once student’s have their country, they should
begin discussing and coming up with ideas for their sections. At this point, one should walk
around and make sure the students are acting cooperatively and are on task.
Tuesday: Spend time researching and finding information from the listed sources. Gain
approval from classmates and teacher for your topic. Research will be done using the class
Ipads, and only on the websites provided. Those websites are:
https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/
https://www.activityvillage.co.uk/around-the-world
https://www.factmonster.com/
These sites should give student’s enough information for their sections.
Be sure to walk around and make sure students are on task, and that there is still
discussion going on between classmates.
Wednesday: Finish any left-over research and begin writing and designing pictures or
models for section of presentation. This portion of writing and designing may be done on
either the Ipad or in the student’s handwriting. It is up to the students how they want to
accomplish this. If they want to type their writing out, they have to make sure to get it
printed out before Design day (Friday). They can either print it out at home or ask you to
print it out for them in class during work time.
Thursday: Edit writing portions and any other parts of each other’s sections. Editing
buddy’s will be put in use to do this. Telling student’s, it is “buddy editing time”, will let
them know to get in their groups of two to do their editing. This part is always slightly
messy, so make sure students stay in their seats during this process. Walk around and work
with each group of two to get through any questions or mistakes they may need help with.
Friday: The design time to each of the corrugate boards and print-outs the students create
will begin. They can decorate the boards however they feel, just as long as it is appropriate.
There are 6 tiny plastic boxes filled with various stickers and other decorations, and even
tools such as scissors and glue. These boxes will be labeled one through six and one student
from each group can grab or ask for their group box once their group is ready for
designing. If all groups are done with writing and editing though, then simply hand the
boxes out to each group. All of the materials for this process and the project as a whole can
be found at the table at the back of the room, near the teacher desk. Walk around during
this process to make sure students are sharing materials and are at task.
Note*: 45 minutes to an hour (depending on student’s timeliness) will be given to students
each day in order to complete their projects. Students can move ahead on their projects if
they have finished initial steps.
Be sure to let students know when they will be presenting, and that their presentations will
be done by group numbers. Their group numbers are taped on their desks just as
reference.
Next week these are the lists of groups and days for when you will present. You are going by
your group number that we always use in class.
The following week will begin the presentations.
Monday (12/03/18) – Groups 1 and 2 will present
Tuesday (12/04/18) – Groups 3 and 4 will present
Wednesday (12/05/18) - Groups 5 and 6 will present

Ask students if there are any questions, or if they need some extra explaining on any of the
tasks.
Also be sure to let student’s know that they may work on their sections at home, and that
they can always reach their classmates through our class Edmodo page.

(9) Assessment:
Each of the student’s grades will be based individually off of their section in the presentation.
They will not be graded as a group, this was only to get them to practice their communication
skills with one another.
A 4- point rubric will be used to asses their sections:

Students grades will be a total out of 16 points.

Besides this grading of the presentations, students will be required to do an embedded
assessment to see what they learned or gained from this project. They will write a summary on
Thursday 12/06/18 on what new information they have gained and learned through their
classmates’ presentations, or even through their own sections. Students should be given 45 to
an hour in order to accomplish this. Every student will be given 10 points for simply
completing this assessment, it is only meant to measure how effective the lesson was for
them.
