Statistics

Testing of hypothesis is one of the most important procedures in the field of statistics. It

involves the use of statistics in establishing the probability of a given hypothesis being false or

true (Bluman). The five critical step of testing the hypothesis include

i. Writing the Ho (null hypothesis).

ii. Writing the H1 (alternative hypothesis).
iii. Setting the amount of allowable error (alpha level) in addition to determining the

degree of freedom.
iv. The decision stage: rejecting or accepting the null

In this particular question,

Null Hypothesis

The null hypothesis is Ho μ = 0.5

Alternative Hypothesis

The alternative hypothesis is Ha μ > 0.5

Testing

The mean deviation for these 6 diamond weights is 0.53 while their standard deviation is 0.0559.

a t-statics is the test statistic which is calculated as

Surname: 2

t=(xx - μ)/(s/√n)

=(0.53-0.5)/(0.0559/√(6))

= 1.3145

This test statistic as with a majority of other large-sample tests offers the grounds for

either accepting or rejecting the Ho. However, the decision is largely based on the distance from

the center Ho lies in the t distribution.

Rejecting Region

In case one selects the level of significance of 5 percent, the region of right-tailed

rejection is obtained utilizing it’s critical value.

With df = n-1

=5

One can reject the null hypothesis, if t > t0.05 =2.015 as figure 1 shows

Decision Stage

Given that the test statistic’s calculated value is 1.32 and hence fails to leans towards the

region of rejection, it is not practical to reject the null; hypothesis. Consequently, the data does

not offer enough proof to show that the mean diamond weight surpass 5 karats.
