COURSE OBJECTIVE:
To provide fundamental knowledge of computer, hardware, software and basics of information technology. To
provide basic skills and be able to use the main personal computer applications

COURSE OUTCOME:
CO1. Students will be able to learn about fundamentals of computers, different input and output devices.
CO2. Learn about IT, issues and challenges.
CO3. Students will also be able to learn the basics of Operating system , different commands related to DOS
operating system.
CO4. Learn about internet and working through internet and cloud.
CO5. Learn different types of networks.

Unit 1 INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY


Fundamental of computer, hardware components of computer- Input/ Output Devices and CPU: RAMs,
ALU, Control Unit. Information Technology, Issues and Challenges in Information Technology. Input
Devices: Keyboard, Mouse, Trackball, Joystick, Digitizing tablet, Scanners, Digital Camera, MICR,
OCR, OMR, Bar-Code Reader, Voice Recognition, Light Pen, Touch Screen. Output Devices: Monitors
Characteristics and types of monitor, Video standard VGA, SVGA, XGA, LCD, LED Screen etc.
printer, Daisy wheel, Dot Matrix, Inkjet, Line Printer. Plotter, Sound Card and Speakers. Storage
fundamental , primary Vs. secondary memory, various storage devices magnetic tape, data drives, hard
drives, floppy disks, CD, VCD, CD-R, CDRW, Zip Drive, DVD, DVD-RW, flash drive.

Unit 2: INTRODUCTION TO OPERATING SYSTEM:
Introduction to operating systems, its functioning and types, basic commands of dos & windows
operating system. DOS Basics –FAT, file & directory structure and naming rules, booting process, DOS
system files. DOS commands – Internal commands: dir, md, cd, rd, copy, del, ren, vol, date, time, cls,
path, type etc. external commands - chkdsk, scope, print, diskcopy, tree, move, label, append, format,
sort, fdisk, backup, mode, attrib, help, sys etc.

Unit 3 COMPUTER NETWORKS:
Introduction to computer network, types of computer network – LAN, MAN and WAN. History of
Internet, Web browsers, working of internet. Introduction to Cloud.
