Kaohsiung Toastmasters Club Ah Counter Script

When you are the Ah Counter

The purpose of the ‘ah counter’ is to note words and sounds used as a “crutch” or “pause filler” by
anyone who speaks during the meeting. Words may be inappropriate interjections such as “and,
well, but, so, you know.” Sounds may be “ah, um, er.” Repeated words or phrases such as “I, I” or
“This Means, this means.” These sounds and phrases can be annoying to the listeners and, at the
same time, decreasing the value of the speech. Therefore, the Ah Counter notes these words and
phrases in order to help the speaker become aware of them and minimize the use of these words
and phrases in future. Note: C1 speakers and guests are exempt from ah counting.

At the Beginning of the Meeting : Explain your role

Suggested script for explanation:

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. My role as the Ah Counter is to

record unnecessary sounds used by the speakers, such as ah, um, er, and
repeated words. I will count the number used and give a report at the
end of the meeting. Each ah counted will cost ten NT dollars, to a
maximum of fifty NT dollars. But, C1 speakers and guests do not need to
pay!”

During the Meeting

Listen to every speaker for crunch words or unnecessary sounds, notes who uses them and
how many each was used.

Present your Report

Please report the number of ahs uttered by all speakers, as they may want to keep a record.
