In the Master frame system, the MMXA board is the core of multiplexing,
switching and control, implementing system functions, such as networking,
Network Management interface, the multiplexing/demultiplexing of ADSL, LAN,
CES (Circuit Emulation Service), Frame Relay (FR) services, switching, local
station system control and the provision of Stratum 3 Clock, etc. MMX supports
multiple types of ATM services, such as CBR, rt-VBR, nrt-VBR, UBR, etc. It also
provides high-performance QoS support for different services.
SEPA is the the system expansion board, plugged in the Master frame and
used to expand the Slave frames (with a maximum of four Slave frames). The
SEPA board is connected to the broadband multiplexing port of the SMXB board
in the Slave frame system, through the internal difference cascade bus. The
SMXB board in the Slave frame system is the multiplexing and control center.
The SMXB board is connected to the cascade port of the SEPA board in the
Master frame system through the internal difference cascade bus, and the level
of this port is the difference level. The bandwidth of the internal difference
cascade bus is 200Mbit/s. With the system overhead deducted, the available
bandwidth is 180Mbit/s. The maximum transmission distance of the internal
difference cascade bus is 9 meters. The NM workstation directly manages the
Master frame system. It can also manage the Slave frame systems through the
Master frame system, via the internal difference cascade bus.

10
SPLB is a Splitter Board, which can be configured in the SPL frame separately,
occupying a frame by itself. Therefore, the slots for service boards in the
backplane frame can all be plugged with ADLC/ADLD boards, thus increasing
the port density.

interface to connect with the multiple MA5100 at the remote end. The remote
MA5100 can access the subscribers of ADSL, CES, FR or LAN.

3.4 Small Size Access System MA5103

When the subscriber quantity at the access point is small, MA5103 is employed
as MA5100, which has two types of structures: desk-top and plug-in frame.
MA5103 is the small size product in the product series. Its board and service
functions are the same as those of MA5100.
1) Desk- top

Any service board including AIU board can be inserted into MA5103(desk-top),
which consists of power source system and is often used as a separate device.

4 Services and Applications

4.1 ADSL Service Access

ADSL services employ DMT modulation method and asymmetrical data
transmission for service transmission. The upstream frequency band is from
26kHz~138kHz. The transmission rate is up to 640kbit/s and the downstream
frequency band is from 138kHz~1.104MHz and the transmission rate is up to
8Mbit/s.
ADSL employs the existing subscriber telephone line to transmit high speed data
and provides multiple types of services to the subscribers, including high speed
Internet access, VOD, visible TV, etc. As the frequency band of ADSL and the
4kHz frequency band of POTS are separated, the normal application of the
POTS will not be affected and no change shall be made for the existing
subscriber network.
The MA5100 multi-service access system supports the DSLAM application to
satisfy the requirements of ADSL access. Respective ports of the ADL board can
multiplex all the services together, through board convergence and then
interconnect with the external Switch or other equipment through the optical
interfaces. The MMX board performs traffic control and shaping of various
services to make them comply with the preset traffic subscription to satisfy the
QoS requirements of the individual PVCs.

4.2 LAN Service Access

It is mainly used for 10BASE-T/100BASE-T Ethernet equipment access whose
transmission distance is less than 100m and based on UTP-5 media. As the
currently popular data transmission services, LAN has the characteristics of
bursting and not too sensitive to time delay.
LAN service access provides PPPOE access via RFC1483B transparent bridge
connection. It supports the LAN subscribers separated by VLAN to directly dial to
the Internet with the existing equipment. For the SME (small and medium sized
enterprises) subscribers incapable to establish private network or bear the cost
of DDN, it provides “broadband dedicated line” access. Via renting the ATM
broadband dedicated line, the enterprise LAN can be connected with MA5100
via the 10/100M Ethernet switch port or router port after separated with the
firewall. Thus, with the existing broadband network, the enterprise headquarters
can connect with its branches and the Internet. Meanwhile, the service quality
requirements of bandwidth, time delay, etc. are ensured. Therefore, the
enterprise can flexibly and conveniently construct its own VPN in the public
network.

4.3 Circuit Emulation

In the evolvement to narrowband and broadband integration of the
telecommunication network, the first encountered problem is how to support
access to the traditional narrowband services in the broadband network so as to
protect investment of the network carriers and the common network subscribers.
Circuit emulation is such a technology. It emulates the original circuit switch and
transmission via the ATM network and bears the real time services of fixed
bandwidth via the AAL1 adaptation protocol, e.g., the traditional 64K voice
services, etc.

13
MA5100 provides to the subscribers multiple channels of E1 circuit emulation
service interfaces, compliant with the circuit emulation standard CES-IS V2.0 of
ATM FORUM and AAL1 adaptation layer protocol defined in ITU-T
Recommendation I.363.1. It supports unstructured circuit emulation (UDT) and
structured circuit emulation (SDT). It supports complete E1 signal access and
can also access Fractional E1or N ×64K time slot bundled transmission. The E1
circuit emulation interface can connect with multiple types of equipment such as
PBX, DDN, video conferencing, etc. and bear multiple types of low rate services.
V.35 interface is the currently large-quantity data service interfaces. MA5100 can
support multiple types of rates from 64K to 2M. MA5100 can provide multiple
channels of V.35 interface access. V.35 interface supports various clock and rate
configuration in the DCE or DTE mode and interconnect conveniently with
multiple types of equipment which provides V.35 interface, e.g., DDN, router, etc.
It bears different service data via the ATM network.

4. 4 Frame Relay Service Access

Frame relay (FR) is a WAN service. The FR access equipment and FR
communities which can support data, fax and even voice application are in rapid
growth nowadays. In recent years, with development of ATM technology, the
coexistence of FR and ATM network and services require that the FR and the
ATM network interwork.
FR network and ATM network interworking falls into two types: network
interworking and service interworking.
In network interworking, each terminal employs the same protocol whereas
different protocols are used between the networks. Protocol conversion in two
directions occurs inside the network. Moreover, the existence of another network
protocol in one network is always transparent to the terminal subscriber.
In service interworking, two terminals may use different protocols and implement
equal telecommunication. Protocol conversion is completed in the network, too.
MA5100 can provide FR/ATM interworking, which is compliant with the network
and service interworking protocols defined in FR FORUM. The network
interworking enables the FR information between the FR terminals transmitted in
the ATM backbone network. The FR terminal can be connected with the ATM
network or the FR network. The service interworking enables the FR CPE of the
FR network and the ATM CPE of the ATM network to interwork transparently
without terminal mapping and conversion. Besides, MA5100 FR interface board
can provide the function of transparent transmission.

4.5 IP-DSLAM Service Access

The MA5100 system can provide the IP-DSLAM networking access application
mode, taking the FE interface of the LANC board as the upstream interface. The
working principle is the same as that of the ADSL cell mode, i.e., establishing
RFC1483B PVC on ATU-R , in the MA5100 system, establish the PVC between
the ADSL port and the VLAN of the LANC cell through the internal cross
connection. The LANC board terminates PVC and RFC1483B bridge protocol,
and converts the data into the Ethernet packet for the upstream. When the
upstream service via FE interface is provided, MA5100 implements the layer-2
function, without involving the layer-3 protocol processing. The ADSL subscriber
can access, either through the dedicated bridge line or in the PPPOE mode.
When an ADSL subscriber is accessed in the PPPOE mode, the subscriber’s PC
should be installed with the PPPOE dial software, and the PPP call is terminated
on the BAS equipment.

14
4.6 Cell Services
The MA5100 multi-service access system supports the PVC of the cell mode,
and the interconnection between the ADSL subscribers and the LAN subscribers.
In this mode, the Server of the cell is accessed through the Ethernet interfaces of
the LAN board, and the independent subscriber is accessed through the ADSL
ports. They are then connected through the PVC between the VLAN of the LAN
board and the ADL port, so as to obtain information service or management
monitoring from the central machine room of the cell or the property
management center.

15
5 Reliability

MA5100 system redundancy and error tolerance measures include MMX

active/standby and cascade expansion board SEP active/standby. The reliability
indexes of MA5100 system are shown as follows:
 Main multiplex and control board: 247146h
 ADSL interface board: 236186h
 Voice splitter board: 6049460h
 Ethernet interface board: 305245h
 Circuit emulation service board: 294643h
 Frame relay service board: 337356h
 MTBF of the integrated equipment: 88090h
 Availability of the equipment: 99.999%
 MTTR: 0.5h
In the design procedure of MA5100, we have fully considered the requirements
in electromagnetic compatibility. EMC of boards has been analyzed. All the
handlebars employ metal materials. The connectors and insertion components
select those with metal screening, e.g., RJ48, etc. BITS clock, ESC monitoring
serial ports, TELNET dialing serial ports, etc. are wired out from the handle bars.
The backplane only leads out -48V power cable. Via designing the metal dummy
panel, the boards of the entire system are circled by the metal frame, thus, the
electromagnetic compatibility of the frame is ensured.
MA5100 is applied in multiple types of environments, e.g., telecommunication
access network, dedicated network, enterprise network, campus network,
intelligent community, etc. The electromagnetic compatibility indexes should be
determined in consideration of multiple types of environments. The EMC design
and test of MA5100 should comply with the following standards:
Compliant with IEC1000-4 Electromagnetic Compatibility Experiment and
Measurement Technology.
Compliant with IEC801.4 Electric Power Instantaneous Change Test
Standard.
 Compliant with IEC555-2 Power Cord Harmonic Wave Test Standard.
 Compliant with ANSI/IEEEC62.41 Lightning Instantaneous Change Test
Standard.

16
6 NMS Access and Centralized Maintenance

MA5100 provides two types of maintenance and management methods:

character terminal and SNMP NMS.

6.1 Character Terminal

The character terminal mode can be further divided into super terminal mode
and TELNET terminal mode. In the super terminal mode, the super terminal of
the computer is directly connected with the serial ports of the MMXA board via
the serial ports. In the TELNET terminal mode, the computer runs the TELNET
protocol and connects with the Ethernet interface of the MMXA board via the IP
network. The MMXA board runs the TELNET SERVER program, receives login
of the management terminal. The management in the TELNET terminal mode
can be outband management and connect with the management Ethernet
interface of the MMX board via the IP network or realize inband management via
the ATM network. In this case, the TELNET terminal must support IPOA protocol
or access the ATM network via supporting the IPOA protocol. The diagram is
shown in Figure 9.

The management in the character terminal mode has simple requirements for
the network management equipment and is easy to realize. The disadvantage is
that it is complicated for operations and the maintenance personnel have to
memorize a great number of commands.

6.2 SNMP NMS

SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) NMS is divided into SNMP
SERVER (server) and SNMP AGENT (network agent). SNMP AGENT runs in the
equipment need to be managed. SNMP SERVER runs in the NMS workstation.
All the operations to the equipment by the subscriber via the NMS workstation
are executed via the SNMP protocol command SNMP AGENT, so are the
execution results. The diagram is shown in Figure 10.
