Presentation of Findings and Analysis

Part 1: Bio Data of Respondents

This section of the chapter presents the bio data of the respondents interviewed for the survey.

From Table 1 above, it is very clear that majority of the respondents representing seventy-four
percent (74%) were males as against twenty-six percent (26%) of females. It is also striking to note
that majority of male respondents representing thirty-eight (38%) were between the ages of thirty-
five (35) and forty-nine (49). Similarly, the same age group formed majority of the female respondents
representing thirty-eight percent (38%).

Part 2: Knowledge on Climate Change of Santiago City farmers and description of weather
conditions.

This section of the analysis focuses on establishing the responses of farmers across Santiago
City on what Climate Change is.

From Table 2 above, male farmers representing Eight-one point zero eight percent (81.08%)
who were interviewed on their views of climate change knew what climate change as compared to
female respondents representing eighteen point ninety-two percent (18.92%).

A look at the response of the occupational status of farmers across the City of Santiago also
reveals surprisingly a majority of employed agricultural workers responding yes to ‘I know what
climate change is’; representing a total of ninety-five percent (95.00%). One hundred percent (100%)
of the self-employed farmers with employees have knowledge about climate change as compared to
just seventy-eight point fifty seven percent (78.57%) of self-employed farmers without employees
responding ‘yes’ to the statement.

Considering the level of education of farmers who responded to what climate change means,
it can be indicated that the higher the education, the more knowledge about climate change and its
meaning.

As can be seen from Table 7 above, majority of the respondents rely on information from
television (58%) programs. It is obvious that the higher the education the respondent, the more one
relies on television than radio. The respondents with higher education are also reading the newspaper
more often than those with lower education. Lack of wider internet coverage in the country coupled
with the lower education status of farmers and agricultural workers seem to have accounted for the
low usage of the internet across the City of Santiago. Statistically, it is difficult to estimate how much
people do have internet access. Despite the fact that internet cafés are being established in the urban
areas, the rural areas are mostly out of the reach for a proper and well- functioning internet network.

Table 8 above reveals that eighty-two percent (82%) of the total respondents are convinced
that the weather has not been steady over the last 5 years; eight percent (8%) have not been sure and
Ten percent (10%) answered that the weather has been steady.

The study shows that women are slightly more convinced of the fact that the weather was not
steady in the past. No real difference can be highlighted. Interestingly, self-employed farmers without
employees are more pessimistic about the statement than employed agricultural workers.
