- Read the article and number the events in the orden in which they

GRAMMAR past simple vs past continuous

 The past continuous and the past simple help us to show how two
past actions or situations are connected.

 The past simple shows us that an action was in the past.

- My parents called me yesterday.

 The past continuous shows us that the action was already in

progress at a certain time in the past.

- What were you doing at 8 p.m. last night? I was studying.

This means that I started studying before 8 p.m. and I continued after 8
p.m.

When we use these two tenses together, it shows us that the past
simple action happened in the middle of the past continuous
action, while it was in progress.

-While I was studying, I suddenly felt sleepy.

20
Centro de Formación Profesional N° 406 – Inglés para Negocios Nivel II

UNIT 4
GRAMMAR conditional type 0

 We use the zero conditional when we want to talk about facts or

things that are generally true. Scientific facts are often covered by
the zero conditional: "When you heat ice, it melts."

IF + PRESENT SIMPLE + , + PRESENT SIMPLE

- For example:
*"When John is out of the office, I take his calls."
*If John is out of the office, I take his calls."

* If water reaches 100 degrees, it boils.

(It is always true, there can’t be a different result sometimes).
*If I drink milk, I feel very sick.
(This is true only for me, maybe, not for everyone, but it’s still true that
I’m sick every time I drink milk).

 It is important to remember that this condition is not realated to the

past, present or future - it only applies to things which are ALWAYS
true.

- However, we can create sentences in either order:

If + present simple,… present simple

OR
Present simple… if + present simple.

- Notice in the second example, we don’t need a comma to separate the

two parts of the sentence but in the first one we do.
 The ‘IF’ in this conditional can usually be replaced by ‘WHEN’
without changing the meaning.

32
