Brief Summary
Strengths
▌ VPCC is the VDI solution which provides industrial top-class performance with NEC original applications; an
integrated management tool “SigmaSystemCenter” (SSC), and an brokering tool “ClientManagementOption”
(CMO).
1. Advantages with SSC
SSC provides an integrated management console, so IT managers can easily manage the virtualized environment
without wandering back and forth with several consoles. SSC also detects virtual PC failure prior to server stop and
realize highly-trusted business continuity.
(See SW Update and Server Protection Measurement sections for additional information)

2. Advantages with CMO

Since CMO has a quite simple structure, it realizes one of the best non-stress login time. CMO also offers an NEC
original feature that signing off once from the virtual PC turns the terminal off (Single-Sign-Off). Maps a terminal to
a virtual PC so that the terminal is fixed to connect to the specified virtual PC (Fixed Terminal Allocation) which is
also our original. (See Connecting Time section for additional information)

3. NEC has own history providing solutions and support for both software and hardware.

What’s new in VPCC 6.1 with functional aspects

▌ The Integrated Management feature has strengthened by topology graphics support, data sheet creation
(xls), show ranking of resource usage and so on.
▌ Import and export of templates via SSC command line.

Virtual Infrastructure (1)
▌ Comparison point
 The numbers of supported virtual environments on virtual desktop technology.
▌ Target to be benefited
 IT manager
▌ Status
 VPCC...2 options (ESXi, Hyper-V)
 VMware Horizon...1 option (ESXi)
 Citrix XenDesktop...5 options (XenServer, ESXi, Hyper-V, AWS, CloudPlatform)
 Huawei FusionCloud...1 option (FusionCompute)
▌ Proposal tips
 For VMware Horizon...This product does not support Microsoft Hyper-V. Recently more clients request Hyper-V
infrastructure, therefore VPCC has an advantage.
 For Citrix XenDesktop...This product supports a greater number of virtualized environments compared to VPCC,
however, current VDI market consists mostly of VMware ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V. Therefore, suggest to clients
that operation reliability should be a key factor instead of supported quantity.
 For Huawei Fusion Cloud...This product does not support Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware ESXi, which are the 2
leading virtual infrastructure.

Software Update (2)
▌ Comparison point
 The functional advantages that enable to configure batch processes, application software installation, etc. as
administrator.
▌ Target to be benefited
 IT manager, End user
▌ Status
 VPCC...Advanced and practical function of Software Update is available by DPM. (VPCC enables software distribution
avoiding active VM, re-distribution only to VM which the patches are not applied and forcible software distribution to “log
off / shutdown” VM.)
 Other products... Time-consuming re-creation of virtual PC is required by altering the master VM or using linked clone.
▌ Proposal tips
IT manager
 VPCC enables batch processing of all operations in arbitrary timings of the administrator.
 It reduces the hassle of individual patch application and software installation, overcome risks of omissions, and saves time
re-creation of virtual machines.
 Other products require re-creation of virtual PC. However, VPCC requires no such re-creating process; no waste of time.
 If competitors mention Linked Clone for counterpoint, persuade the customers that its operation is complicated.
End user
 End user save time of patch application and software installation.

Batch Creation of Virtual PC (2)
▌ Comparison point
 The presence of a function to batch-create multiple virtual PCs according to a master template created by an
administrator.
▌ Target to be benefited
 IT manager, End user
▌ Status
 VPCC...SSC enables this function.
 VMware Horizon...View Administrator enables this function.
 Citrix XenDesktop...No Full Clone can be batch created within vSphere infrastructure. On Hyper-V infrastructure,
System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) is mandatory : additional cost is necessary.
 Huawei FusionCloud...FusionCloud enables this function.
▌ Proposal tips
IT manager
 When created virtual PC numbers increase, the higher the demand on this function becomes. SSC not only enables
batch creation of multiple virtual PCs but also auto-control the number of virtual PCs to be created so that the
storage is not overloaded.
End user
 Installation by an end user is not necessary. Prompt commencement of operation is possible.

11 © NEC Corporation 2017 NEC Group and Partners Only

App Virtualization (8)
▌ Comparison point
 The presence of application virtualization function.
▌ Target to be benefited
 End user
▌ Status

consult Microsoft directly for the support for installation, configuration and operation.)
 VMware Horizon, Huawei FusionCloud…Microsoft App-V corresponds to application virtualization.
 Citrix XenDesktop…Supported by XenApp with equivalent functionality.
▌ Proposal tips
 First confirm whether or not the application specified by a customer supports virtualization.
 Explain the two following points when using application virtualization:
• NEC recommends to install the application in a virtual PC.
• The reason is that application virtualization has complicated issues on application compatibilities, limitations or license
restrictions.
 In case a customer strongly wishes to use application virtualization and the target application is supported for
virtualization, suggest to consider Microsoft App-V, with which NEC has many track records in Japan. Ask the
customer to consult Microsoft directly for the support for installation, configuration and operation.

Server Protection Measurement (2)
▌ Comparison point
 The presence of the function helps avoid operation halt by detecting hardware abnormalities which lead to system
failures, and by transferring the virtual machine to other virtual machine servers (migration).
▌ Target to be benefited
 IT manager, End user
▌ Status
 VPCC…Failure sign detection function of SSC. This function detects errors such as CPU abnormalities, fan malfunction, and
temperature. Virtual PCs are transferred automatically prior to such server failures.
 Huawei FusionCloud...Memory, CPU and HDD status of nodes can be monitored automatically. Virtual PCs can be
automatically recovered when a node fails.
 Other products...No function to detect abnormalities on server nor execute virtual PC migration.
▌ Proposal tips
 Emphasize that no downtime occurs with this function. Downtime must be considered during such anomaly due to
other products not incorporating this feature for cold migrations. Moreover, VPCC sends the IT manager failure
notifications when one of HDDs within RAID pool has defectives.

13 © NEC Corporation 2017 NEC Group and Partners Only

GPU (14)
▌ Comparison point
 Compare whether or not applications with heavy graphic usage, such as graphic editors, 3D or CAD, are supported without
disturbance of operation.
▌ Target to be benefited

▌ Status
 VPCC...No (official) support.
 VMware Horizon...Support with Blast Multimedia. Virtual Dedicated Graphics Acceleration (vDGA) with NVIDIA GPU pass
through technology supports applications which frequently use 3D on workstation. Also Virtual Shared Graphics
Acceleration (vSGA) with NVIDIA vGPU technology shares graphics accelerator with multiple power users. Supports any
editions.
 Citrix XenDesktop...HDX 3D Pro with NVIDIA GPU pass through technology supports applications which frequently use 3D
on workstation. HDX 3D Pro also supports NVIDIA vGPU technology and enables sharing of graphics accelerator with
multiple power users. Requires Enterprise / Platinum and vSphere Enterprise edition.
 Huawei FusionCloud...FusionCompute with NVIDIA GPU pass through technology supports applications which frequently
use 3D on workstation. Supported in FusionCloud Standard Edition and Advanced Edition.

▌ Proposal tips
 Explain customers that products of other companies may not offer satisfactory results since virtualization of GPU degrades
graphics functions on virtual PC. Moreover, virtualization of GPU lowers the number of virtual PC that can hold in a
system, raises the cost higher, and limits functionalities such as vMotion. Propose to introduce dedicated workstations for
such users; run high-graphical application natively on the workstation and business applications on virtual PC.
14 © NEC Corporation 2017 NEC Group and Partners Only

▌ Target to be benefited
 End user
▌ Status
 VPCC on Hyper-V infrastructure and Citrix XenDesktop...Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV) cache of virtual machine can
be used, however, it is not effective without Differential Clone.
 VPCC on VMware infrastructure and Citrix XenDesktop...Equivalent function is not provided. VMware Storage
Accelerator (VSA) function is not applicable.
 VMware Horizon...Provided by VSA function.
▌ Proposal Tips
 This function is effective for clients who require simultaneous login within a large scale infrastructure, however, VPCC
