Competitive Sales Strategies From Functional Aspects

Version 2.2 as of May 24th, 2017 NEC Corporation

Introduction

Purpose and target reader of this document

The purpose of this document is to understand the advantages and disadvantages of

VirtualPCCenter (VPCC) 6.1 as well as other competitor products.

The target readers of this document are the sales engineers of local subsidiaries who are planning to create a strategic presentation for their clients.

Competitors

The products VMware Horizon 7.1, Citrix XenDesktop 7.13 and Huawei FusionCloud 6.0 are considered competing solution products given the fact that these products occupy high share in the VDI market.

Comparisons

Functions of VDI solutions (basic specification, performance, and operation management)

Functions of connection broker (basic specification, performance, and operation)

Brief Summary

Strengths

VPCC is the VDI solution which provides industrial top-class performance with NEC original applications; an integrated management tool “SigmaSystemCenter(SSC), and an brokering tool “ClientManagementOption(CMO).

1. Advantages with SSC

SSC provides an integrated management console, so IT managers can easily manage the virtualized environment

without wandering back and forth with several consoles. SSC also detects virtual PC failure prior to server stop and

realize highly-trusted business continuity.

(See SW Update and Server Protection Measurement sections for additional information)

2. Advantages with CMO

Since CMO has a quite simple structure, it realizes one of the best non-stress login time. CMO also offers an NEC

original feature that signing off once from the virtual PC turns the terminal off (Single-Sign-Off). Maps a terminal to

a virtual PC so that the terminal is fixed to connect to the specified virtual PC (Fixed Terminal Allocation) which is

also our original.

(See Connecting Time section for additional information)

3. NEC has own history providing solutions and support for both software and hardware.

What’s new in VPCC 6.1 with functional aspects

The Integrated Management feature has strengthened by topology graphics support, data sheet creation (xls), show ranking of resource usage and so on.

Import and export of templates via SSC command line.

For Citrix XenDesktop

This

product supports a greater number of virtualized environments compared to VPCC,

however, current VDI market consists mostly of VMware ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V. Therefore, suggest to clients that operation reliability should be a key factor instead of supported quantity.

Other products

Proposal tips

Time-consuming re-creation of virtual PC is required by altering the master VM or using linked clone.

IT manager

VPCC enables batch processing of all operations in arbitrary timings of the administrator.

It reduces the hassle of individual patch application and software installation, overcome risks of omissions, and saves time re-creation of virtual machines.

Other products require re-creation of virtual PC. However, VPCC requires no such re-creating process; no waste of time.

If competitors mention Linked Clone for counterpoint, persuade the customers that its operation is complicated.

Proposal tips

IT manager

When created virtual PC numbers increase, the higher the demand on this function becomes. SSC not only enables batch creation of multiple virtual PCs but also auto-control the number of virtual PCs to be created so that the storage is not overloaded.

End user

Installation by an end user is not necessary. Prompt commencement of operation is possible.

App Virtualization (8)

Comparison point

The presence of application virtualization function.

Target to be benefited

End user

Status

VPCC…No support. However, VPCC has many track records of integration with Microsoft App-V. (Ask the customer to

consult Microsoft directly for the support for installation, configuration and operation.)

VMware Horizon, Huawei FusionCloud…Microsoft App-V corresponds to application virtualization.

Citrix XenDesktop…Supported by XenApp with equivalent functionality.

Proposal tips

First confirm whether or not the application specified by a customer supports virtualization.

Explain the two following points when using application virtualization:

NEC recommends to install the application in a virtual PC.

The reason is that application virtualization has complicated issues on application compatibilities, limitations or license restrictions.

In case a customer strongly wishes to use application virtualization and the target application is supported for virtualization, suggest to consider Microsoft App-V, with which NEC has many track records in Japan. Ask the customer to consult Microsoft directly for the support for installation, configuration and operation.

Server Protection Measurement (2)

Comparison point

The presence of the function helps avoid operation halt by detecting hardware abnormalities which lead to system

failures, and by transferring the virtual machine to other virtual machine servers (migration).

Target to be benefited

IT manager, End user

Status

VPCC…Failure sign detection function of SSC. This function detects errors such as CPU abnormalities, fan malfunction, and temperature. Virtual PCs are transferred automatically prior to such server failures.

Huawei FusionCloud

FusionCompute

with NVIDIA GPU pass through technology supports applications which frequently

use 3D on workstation. Supported in FusionCloud Standard Edition and Advanced Edition.

Proposal tips

Explain customers that products of other companies may not offer satisfactory results since virtualization of GPU degrades graphics functions on virtual PC. Moreover, virtualization of GPU lowers the number of virtual PC that can hold in a system, raises the cost higher, and limits functionalities such as vMotion. Propose to introduce dedicated workstations for such users; run high-graphical application natively on the workstation and business applications on virtual PC.

Optimal Resource Allocation (2)

Comparison point

The function to monitor load state of virtual machine; and to keep appropriate load state by transferring virtual PC or

shutdown / boot the virtual machine server.

Status

Each product has an equivalent function.

Proposal tips

VPCC…Checking validity of virtual PC alongside transfers are configurable by policy settings.

For VMware Horizon / Citrix XenDesktop

These

products have no function to return virtual PC to previous position,

however VPCC has the function of repositioning to the default position.

Access Log Acquisition (8)

Comparison point

The function to revise access history from a ThinClient terminal to virtual PC in log (enabling user access

management).

Target to be benefited

IT manager

Status

Each product has an equivalent function.

Proposal tips

For VMware Horizon…Additional DB is required.

For Citrix XenDesktop

In

Each protocol has different default setting. The default setting of HDX is optimized for narrow band, PCoIP is optimized for high resolution, RDP is for balancing both narrow band and high resolution. However by tuning, each protocol can achieve a desirable performance.

Proposal tips

Performance over RDP10 and other protocols are almost equivalent.

Access Method (6)

Comparison point

The numbers of method to access connection broker to ThinClient terminal.

Target to be benefited

Status

VMware Horizon, Citrix XenDesktop and Huawei FusionCloud…Supports Agent-Manager version which installs Agent on ThinClient terminals and to communicate with Server Manager. And web browser version which connects to virtual PC from Web browser.

VPCC

Supports

Agent-Manager version.

Proposal tips

VPCC is disadvantageous as it does not support web browser version. Therefore, suggest clients to use Agent-

Manager for typical office administration.

VMware Horizon, Citrix XenDesktop and Huawei FusionCloud may be advantageous since web browser is supported. For Citrix XenDesktop, dedicated receiver and software is needed to establish secure connection via HDX.

Virtual PC Distribution (7)

Comparison point

The number of methods to distribute virtual PCs. There are two general types: connecting a virtual PC to an end user

or sharing multiple virtual PCs with multiple end users.

Target to be benefited

IT manager

Status

Every product supports MyPC mode which connect each user and virtual PC, and SharePC mode which distribute each user to a vacant virtual PC.

VPCC provides Advance Distribution which distribute users to a virtual PC in advance, and VMware Horizon and Citrix XenDesktop provide Initial Distribution which distributes users to a virtual PC at initial login.

VMware Horizon and Citrix XenDesktop deletes virtual PCs at every logoff and refreshes the virtual PC.

Proposal tips

Some prefer Advance Distribution, and others Initial Distribution. Suggest that Advance Distribution is easier for management.

Active Directory Requirement (8)

Comparison point

Whether or not Active Directory server is required to configure connection broker.

Target to be benefited

Business owners, IT manager

Status

VMware Horizon, Citrix XenDesktop and Huawei FusionCloud requires Active Directory, meanwhile CMO functions as

a connection broker without an Active Directory.

CMO console facilitates adding users.

Proposal tips

VPCC does not require an Active Directory server, and can configure connection broker in small scale environments

and client premise without an Active Directory or test environments.

Support for Connection Terminals (9)

Comparison point

The number of connectable terminals.

Target to be benefited

End user

Status

Each product supports Windows Embedded, WTOS, Android, iOS, etc., and wide range of devices from ThinClient

terminals to tablets.

Proposal tips

VMware Horizon, Citrix XenDesktop and Huawei FusionCloud support the above mentioned devices. The supported range of Citrix XenDesktop is wider, however, there is not much difference since ThinClient terminals or tablets dominate in VDI solutions.

While the support for tablet devices are standard on other products, it is an optional on VPCC. However, the cost becomes reasonable if a customer does not require the use of tablet. The cost is still competitive even if the tablet option is included, compared with VMware Horizon or Citrix XenDesktop.

Supportable Large Scale System for Connection Broker (12)

Comparison point

The maximum number of virtual PCs that multiple connection brokers can handle in one system.

Target to be benefited

Business owners, IT manager

Status

VPCC…20 CMO servers or 40,000 virtual PCs, either one that reaches first. (Max. number of virtual PCs that can be

managed on a CMO Server is 2,000.)

(Max. number of virtual PCs on a Delivery Controller / StoreFront Server: approx. 3,000.)

(Max. number of virtual PCs per FusionAccess: 20,000.)

80,000

Proposal tips

VPCC can hold more number of virtual PCs compared to the leading VDI products; Horizon and XenDesktop. Present your clients the fact that our product is superior to other products in the aspects of cost and system capacity and easy management when it comes to a large-scale system.

There is no big functional difference among the products. VPCC has a track record of supporting up to 2,800 virtual

PCs with one connection broker. If your proposal exceeds more than 2,000 clients with one connection broker,

consult Askteam in advance.

Support to Peripheral Devices (10)

Comparison point

A USB device connected to a client terminal is redirected(*) by RDP and will be considered as a USB device physically

connected to the virtual desktop. Every solution has this redirection function when USB cannot be redirected by RDP.

* To be able to use USB device which is connected to Thin Client Terminal by RDP function as if connects directly to virtual desktop.

Target to be benefited

End user

Status

VPCC…USB Redirection of RDP10.

VMware Horizon supports the function with Policy Template.

Citrix XenDesktop and Huawei FusionCloud supports with HDX and USB Redirection, although there are limitation in

terminals types.

Proposal tips

Performance over RDP10 and other protocols are almost equivalent.

Power Control of Virtual PC by End User (11)

Comparison point

The function to enable end users to boot / shutdown virtual PC; and the ability to reboot the virtual PC when the

virtual PC stalls.

Target to be benefited

IT manager, End user

Status

VPCC, VMware Horizon and Huawei FusionCloud…Provide functions to boot virtual PC whose power is off, to shut down, and to reboot virtual PC's during stalls. FusionCloud also has a self-service maintenance console for the users when they cannot access virtual PCs.

Citrix XenDesktop…The function is available on its web portal; power on or off are supported, but restart function is not available.

Proposal tips

For Citrix XenDesktop…Propose VPCC allows the end users to reboot their virtual PCs by themselves, which consumes less time and workload of end users and IT manager to resolve some issues.

Connecting Time

Comparison point

Connecting time from login to connecting terminal to virtual desktop.

Target to be benefited

End user

Status

VPCC < VMware Horizon < Citrix XenDesktop

Proposal tips

The structure of CMO is simpler comparing to other connection brokers, thus takes shorter process to assign a virtual PC.

The shorter the connecting time is, the less stress the end user experiences. This is the advantage of VPCC.
