I. Approach, Methodology & Assessment

Rationale & Content

English IV continues providing instruction and practice in the EFL working-context by
using the language to convey meaning with a strong emphasis in accuracy and fluency
in productive skills, so that class participants can continue building and strengthening
their skills, listening, speaking, writing and reading in an integrated manner. The
textbook, Project Success 5, presents a variety of communicative tasks, which aim at
helping teachers plan and give students the opportunity to work both collaboratively and
independently. Some of the activities are designed to enhance students’ fluency while
others will help them acquire the job-seeking skills necessary to fit in a more global world.

This course is designed to connect cultural and language skills as well as learning
outcomes through interesting communicative activities and tasks, reading passages,
listening drills, and speaking activities that will keep the students’ attention at all times,
so that they feel motivated and engaged while learning.

II. Goals and Objectives

The UTB English program aims to foster three main goals which will be acquired and
developed throughout six academic English levels. Therefore, students will work on the
necessary language general objectives and level specific objectives to master them during
each level of the program.

 Target Goal: Development of the communicative competence in English.

 Learning Goal: Encouragement of learning through written and spoken language.
 Human Goal: Raising awareness for cooperative work.

Language General Objectives

At the end of English IV, students will be able to:
 Express and treat non-routine information in the personal and professional field.
 Process and express simple and direct information in known contexts.
 Communicate information in a simple way about the social and familiar environment.
2

Level Specific Objectives

At the end of English IV, students will be able to:
 Understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most
immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local

III. Methodology
During English IV course, the teacher will use different methods and approaches to
deliver lessons through the textbook Project Success 4. Even though the proposed
approach is the communicative approach, special attention will be also placed on
integrating language skills and on developing job-seeking skills for the 21st century. All
English classes have to be student-centered, so that class participants can fulfill their roles,
3

which are to use language and language functions immediately they are learning and
acquiring during class instruction. The role of the teacher is that of a guide and a
facilitator, who is willing to assist students acquire the necessary language functions to
exchange information and to convey their ideas in different job-related real contexts.

IV. Assessment

The semester is divided into three academic terms. Each one has a different percentage
and students are required to get the minimum passing grade (3.0) to pass. A grade under
3.0 is considered a failing grade. Please refer to the following chart:

For the missing 30% of the final grade for the module, students will have a final oral test,
which assesses the corresponding level of the commom European framework, (please
check the chart number 1.

Language functions: Functions are the means students need to master the target language
through the study and practice of grammar structures and vocabulary use in real-life
situations. Functions will enable students to use language well in different contexts by
exchanging messages with different people at different register levels.

My English Lab (MEL):

On this platform, students will practice all different aspects learned in the different lessons
cover each unit, as in a workbook. Activities will be assigned weekly by the teacher, and
they are to be done on the Assignment link and not on the Course link. Feedback will be
provided by the teacher on a weekly basis. As a result, all students are to buy the book
since the first week of class to be able to complete the assignments and for further
language practice.

Performance: This category includes only two aspects as follows:

 Homework assignments: The number of activities the student completes during

a term in a semester, these activities must be correlated with the functions and
competences per midterm.
 Class Projects: The teacher will assign a project taken from the teacher resources
of the ACTIVE TEACH of the book, the teacher has the faculty and may decide
variations or additions according to his needs and the courses characteristics, this
project will be graded in each term, two drafts in the first terms and a final product
for the last term of the semester.

Mid-term Exam: The mid-term exams will be oral in the first and second midterm and
written in the third midterm, the final test at the end of the semester will be oral and assess
the levels of the commom European framework. In case you cannot take one due to health
issues, please bring the corresponding medical excuse the next following day in order to
take the quiz on a different assigned day agreed by the student and the teacher.
