CHAPTER I.
INTRODUCTION
A student’s main job is to study and most of their tasks revolve around their
academic responsibilities. Their common goal is to graduate and finish their schooling.
Though in every journey, trials would certainly be encountered. One of the most
common problems that students form the Philippines often go through is the need for
financial aid, though, besides needing certain necessities to survive their academic
year, is the fact that most of their time is wasted because of travel constraints.
Commuting in the Philippines can be considered as one of the daily trials a student or
any commuter has to go through. It is given that the commuting system in the
Philippines is not the best, wherein mostly have overlooked the situation and has not
considered that they could have a better experience. Hence, this would result to
students opting to live in dorms for convenience purposes.
It has been very apparent in the Philippines for students to reside in
dormitories for their academic needs, especially for those who live far away from their
school’s vicinity. Those who live in provinces often choose to look for dormitories as
their prior home for the academic school year to be able to fully focus on their studies.
Though, the rise of the number of student athletes has been prevailing in the
Philippines. Most Ivy League schools have been recruiting athletes to represent their
school in exchange for academic scholarship. Instead of travelling everyday from their
homes to their schools, most students would choose to get a dormitory wherein they
could stay during the academic year.
Not all dormitories could be considered as a comfortable place to stay,
though most students would endure their current situation for the sake of their
academic and athletic responsibilities. There are a lot of things to consider when living
in a dormitory, and according to Abraham Moslow, each person has certain needs that
needs to be fulfilled. From his hierarchy of needs, each division is categorized into
three different main needs. First is the basic needs which is the physiological needs
and safety needs; second, is the psychological needs which is the belongingness and
love needs and esteem needs; lastly, the self-fulfillment needs which is the
self-actualization needs.
Considering that student athletes are trained for their physical skills in their
respective sports, but their mental strength as well. Research showed pieces of
evidence that students participating in sports and physical activities lead to developed
mental and physical alertness (Montecalbo-Ignacio, Ignacio III., Buot, 2017). Hence,
this would help them be more physically, mentally and emotionally prepared to
overcome certain situations in relation to residing in a dormitory. Though, from the
articles that we have studied, mostly tackled the intrapersonal problems that the
students have experienced such as homesickness and lack of nutrition due to the lack
of resources. Some to none, did not discuss how staying in a dormitory could also help
one’s survival and independent nature to develop as well.
The purpose of this study is to measure the independence of San Beda
College Alabang Athletes in correlation to their living experience in dormitories. This
study aims to seek answers to the following questions to determine the advantages
and disadvantages of living independently:
1. What is the most evident factor that influences the independent nature of
the lived experiences of SBCA Student Athletes residing in dormitories?
Numerous student-athletes from San Beda College Alabang are proved to be
living in dormitories and that the study will be beneficial for the said respondents.
The influence of the independent lifestyle has been attested that
student-athletes will witness adulthood and show maturity in terms of prioritizing the
responsibilities of living alone. Additionally, the opportunities of living independently will
offer the student-athletes time for personality development and enhance its critical and
practical skills. The study proves that it is widening the student-athletes’ knowledge
and abilities and has given more chance to focus on academics alongside sports.
The findings of the study would determine its valuables to the student-athletes.
This study could also serve as a basis for a wider understanding about living in a
dormitory to the independent nature.
The target respondents are student athletes from San Beda College Alabang
who are currently residing in dormitories. They should have experienced living in a
dormitory for at least a year to be able to properly determine and assess which factor
from living in a dormitory has the highest percentage of influence to the independent
nature of the student. Due to time constraints and for the convenience of the
researchers, a total of 30-50 respondents will be utilized to obtain data.
CHAPTER II.
Student Athletes
The research topic is about if student-athletes are being prepared as much as
any other student and if they are given support system for them to have the
opportunities to excel in their career-choices and areas of interests outside of their
sports life. As well when there are instances that athletes transition into regular
students and there is a significant number of pros and cons but there programs that
were made to help these students experience in the transitional state. In addition,
giving these students the proper care and consideration of what they have endured
during their playing days and that the necessary support for these students are made.
Lastly, the programs are focused more on male athletes as they are the ones who
suffer the most in the transition and in academics as they struggle to fully adapt
mentally back into the academic setting.
This study is beneficial to our research as it shows the transitional programs that
support students participating in sports and student-athletes that become full-time
students again. It also adds the idea of the suggestive that adding programs for these
current and former athletes that will help them excel in their academics and as well on
the playing-field by considering the workload they work through day-by-day.

Careers and Life After College Sports?: A Review of the Literature" (2018). Kinesiology,

This research aims to show the student-athlete life in school and that even
though it is difficult to balance excellence in both academic standing and in sports,
however, it can improve their thinking such as improved logic, processing of
information, and patience. In addition, it also motivates them in academic ambitions
and regularly attend classes despite the hectic schedule and workload, as well as
experiencing the benefits of having great physical health that improves cognitive skills.
Downside is that it is difficult to balance and shift focus between academics and sports
since the schedules conflict and the time needed to recover from playing. In the
Philippines, the sports programs for student-athletes here may be systematically
different from each university, but the thing they have in common is the focus on the
achievements of both academics and representation in sports.
The study helps our research by seeing the focuses and set goals of the schools for
student-athletes, as well as the difficulty of being one has great benefits, the
highlighted problem is about the workload management and scheduling by schools.
The researchers' as well explore and study about the sports program and academic
intervention for athletes of San Beda.

Achievement as Influenced by Sports Participation in Selected Universities in the
Philippines. Education. 2017. 53-57. 10.5923/j.edu.20170703.03.
The topic of this study are the freshmen student-athletes that the school recruits
and gets through admissions with average or below average performance in
academics and this is the result of mismanagement and no academic intervention. The
noticeable results when looked upon were their test-taking abilities and listening to the
classroom in a new environment, even after having settled in, there are still barriers that
will prove to be a learning curve. Collegiate athletes in Indonesia have similar
advantages and disadvantages in their culture of college sports, as it is difficult for
them to chase their academics into their new college as it is a totally new environment
for them considering the levels of colleges and schools in the country.
This study of Indonesian collegiate athletes show that they have similarities to what
Filipino collegiate athletes also go through. In conclusion, it is known for a fact that
some studies from neighbouring countries may share the same similarities and
situations and that we the researchers can use in order to further our study and expand
our end results.

Student Athletes Residing in a Dormitory
The study foresees the mental and personal state of student-athletes who
experience homesickness by residing in dormitories on or around the school campus
and that they may even experience this even before moving in. The study emphasizes
the effects of the transitional state in leaving home for a new environment and it has
been recognized as homesickness through the use of indicators such as changes in
self-confidence, behaviors, traits, coping mechanisms, etc. In addition, homesickness
is complex and is connected to the thoughts of the old environment more than the new
one even despite adaptation.

in Residential Athletes. Journal of Clinical Sport Psychology, 2015, 9, 138-155

The study's aim is to see what goes on the culture of student-athletes and how
their personality, character, and behavior are shaped and molded as individuals as a
collective through organisational Psychology in which shows the dedication and
passion they have whilst comparing to American athletes from the United States
seeing how the model of the sports programs in the Philippines is based on American
standards and methods of training and playing.
The information and knowledge the researchers' gained from this study are
more on the social climate and nature of the student-athlete program in San Beda and
it gives new perspectives on how to suggest to the offices and people involved to give
insight into bringing in the prospect of having sports psychology and a psychologist for
the student-athletes.

Independent Nature of Student Athletes
The objectives of this study are about the external and internal factors of
student-athletes from the resulting adjustments that naturally occurs when living
independently away from their families for college mainly focusing on the first-year
college students. The psychological effects take a toll on the physical aspects of
students as it noticeably affects their social skills, work ethic, and behaviors, as well as
affecting their living conditions. The student-athletes may experience various changes
in terms of being genuinely alone and living without parental supervision.
Calaguas, GM. (2014). Living away from home: IHomesickness as experienced by
college freshmen. Cypriot Journal of Educational Sciences. 9(4), 270-279.
The study conducted is a quasi-experimental research, as the data gathered and field
of study is random, it is to achieve the goal of finding out the overall stresses of being
an athlete in school and how physical fatigue, competitions, injuries, roles in the team,
affect the overall character and development of the student when they transition to
college. This study was conducted at the University of Manitoba in Canada, and
according to the researchers, it is stated that around 30% of first year college students
dropout of their first-year due to the difficulty in stepping up from high school. It is
mainly due to the difficulty of facing the work for school and playing competitively for
your school and a considerable number of athletes struggle coping and catching up in
higher institutions.
This helps our study by seeing the balance of workload and how to combat these by
spreading the information as well as adding it to our study to conduct a local study in
San Beda Alabang. It is to let the public know that a student-athlete in the Philippines
is more than just playing the sport and representing a school, but it is a lifestyle for a
lot of people and students as it is a passion and balancing it with academics is difficult
especially attaining a higher-education in the country.

The literature's topic is about the career-planning and intervention in the lives of
athletes and how can colleges help them as they venture when they leave the world of
college sports. As it will provide great understanding in helping create a system and
different methods of approach to helping the student-athletes and raise awareness of
their situations. As well giving them a platform to truly excel by helping them
psychologically into adapting their academic and work ethics.
The study's relation to this research paper is that it seeks the effects of sports
participation in college and how it is the most affecting to the preparations in careers of
students after graduation. In addition, the everlasting effects, lessons, and skills
learned from being a student-athlete translates into the workplace and that our findings
will be expanded further due to this study.

CHAPTER III.
METHODOLOGY
Research Design
The study aims to find the correlation of the living experiences of student
athletes in their respective dormitories to their level of independence. The study would
also like to measure and determine which factor is the most influential, hence a
quanti-correlational approach would be used to analyze data to be able to fulfill the
study’s objectives.
Research Locale
The selected respondents for this study should be a certified student of San
Beda College Alabang who is a part of any varsity team and has experienced living in a
dormitory for about a year. The target respondents should at least be 16 years of age.
Sampling Technique
The instruments used in the study are research questionnaires. Questionnaires are
divided into … parts. First part is ... The questionnaires were designed in a way that it
shall meet the main objective of the study which is to determine which factor from
living in a dormitory has the highest percentage of influence to the independent nature
of the student athletes that will be tallied and assessed accordingly. It is the most
common tool used in almost every survey and it gives factual and straightforward
information in less time at a relatively low cost.
The researchers will ask permission from the ... and ... to conduct the research.
Afterwards, the researchers will personally administer the questionnaires to the
respondents and assure them of confidentiality to be able to obtain honesty.
