3
Thermoplastic elastomer definition

• TPEs are a diverse family of rubberlike materials that, unlike

conventional thermoset rubbers, can be processed and recycled like
thermoplastic materials

• Look, feel and behave like rubber

• Simplified, more flexible part design and manufacturing

• Fastest growing elastomer since 1985 (6 to 7% per year)

4
TPE composition and properties

• All composed of hard and soft segments

• Hard segments influence:
• Heat resistance
• Oil and solvent resistance
• Tear strength
• Tensile strength
• Soft segments impact:
• Compression set/tensile set
• Low temperature performance
• Impact resistance
• Ratio of hard and soft segments drive:
• Hardness
• Modulus
• Flexibility

What is Santoprene™ TPV?

• Chemically crosslinked (vulcanized) rubber encapsulated in thermoplastic matrix

• Properties like thermoset rubber but melt-processable like thermoplastic

• Homogeneous dispersion of small particle-size rubber provides good tensile

strength

• Locked-in morphology provides stable physical properties
