Part 1
“Rizal, by universal consent, is first among Filipinos who have distinguished themselves for
service to their country” page 536, propositions of the Draft Letter A no. 1

 It is stated that Rizal is by far the first person among the Filipinos back then who
distinguished their service of heroism in our country. Who gave his own life for the
Filipinos for them to see it’s time to stand up against the oppressors.

“His love for his country did not blame all ills on strangers, but proclaimed that the Filipino was
also victims of their own vices and defects” page 536, propositions of the Draft Letter A no. 4

 This passage means that Rizal did not put his friends, families, and others with his
statements. But he is stating that the Filipinos are victims of their vices and defects,
because he is seeing it in his own very eyes that his own countrymen are falling for those
vices and defects that make it harder to fight the system and Make a change.

“He devoted himself dispelling the ignorance of his people, raising their moral standards,
combating the injustices and inequality under which they labored.” Page 536, propositions of the
Draft Letter A no. 3

 When condemned to death for this is as a rebel, he preferred to suffer death rather than
abandon the principles on which, “the welfare of his country depended.” This statement
showed Rizal aggressive approach for the country. He’s willing to die, he’s willing to
suffer for he knew that the people are depended on him and he doesn’t want to abandon
the principles of his country. Rizal fights for injustices and inequality. He wanted his
people to become vigilant against others.

“In doing this, Rizal did not attack the Catholic Church itself; rather he did it service. Page 537,
propositions of the Draft Letter A no. 13

 In doing this, Rizal did not attack the Catholic Church itself; rather he did it a service.
Rizal did not only point out the Catholic Church (both Filipino at Spanish friars) but also
the vices and defects of the Filipinos. The main point of two novels is to show the world
what is happening to the Philippines during Spanish colonization in the Philippines.
“His marvelous balance of judgment saved him” page 533, Summary of A

 It is said that his love for his county is considered as not an unthinking love this means
that he did not overcoat on his novels the negative image of his own fellow Filipinos.
With that kind of characteristics of Rizal it is indeed admirable to the point that he is
fearless in denouncing defects of Filipinos during his time. That kind of perspective is
creditable in a way that his truthful judgment embraced nationalism as well.

Part 2 (Deepening)
“Rizal did not blame all ills on strangers, but proclaimed that the Filipinos were also victims of
their own vices and defects”

Identify those defects. Discuss how those vices and defects affect us today

 Crab mentality - Why is it called crab mentality? because like crabs to para makalabas
The people behind this mentality have this attitude like they are
too proud of themselves na walang makakatalo sa kanila.
Isa to sa dahilan
kung bakit hindi umuunlad ang mga pilipino.

 Colonial mentality -this is the attitude of filipinos wherein they enjoying or rejoiced by
the culture and products of other country.
Like the gen z
or the generation now, ang iba sa kanila their knowledge are limited, like yung iba di na alam
ung ibat ibang culture sa pilipinas like yung mga festivals even the traditons of our ancestors,
hindi na sila masyadong aware sa mga ganyan, actually they know more about koreans such as
their foods etc.

mamaya in filipino and proscastination in english.
