Introduction of Social media
Social media are interactive computer-mediated technologies that facilitate
the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of
expression via virtual communities and networks.[1][2] The variety of stand-alone and
built-in social media services currently available introduces challenges of definition;
however, there are some common features:[2]

1. Social media are interactive Web 2.0 Internet-based applications.[2][3]

2. User-generated content, such as text posts or comments, digital photos or
videos, and data generated through all online interactions, is the lifeblood of
social media.[2][3]
3. Users create service-specific profiles for the website or app that are designed
and maintained by the social media organization.[2][4]
4. Social media facilitate the development of online social networks by
connecting a user's profile with those of other individuals or groups. [2][4]
Users usually access social media services via web-based technologies
on desktops and laptops, or download services that offer social media functionality to
their mobile devices (e.g., smartphones and tablets). As users engage with
these electronic services, they create highly interactive platforms through which
individuals, communities, and organizations can share, co-create, discuss,
participate and modify user-generated content or pre-made content posted online.
Networks formed through social media change the way groups of people interact and
communicate or stand with the votes. They "introduce substantial and pervasive
changes to communication between organizations, communities, and
individuals."[1] These changes are the focus of the emerging fields
of technoself studies. Social media differ from paper-based media (e.g., magazines
and newspapers) and traditional electronic media such as TV broadcasting, Radio
broadcasting in many ways, including quality,[5] reach, frequency, interactivity,
usability, immediacy, and performance. Social media outlets operate in a dialogic
transmission system (many sources to many receivers).[6] This is in contrast
to traditional media which operates under a mono-logic transmission model (one
source to many receivers), such as a newspaper which is delivered to many
subscribers, or a radio station which broadcasts the same programs to an entire city.
Some of the most popular social media websites, with over 100 million registered
users, include Facebook (and its associated Facebook
Messenger), WeChat, Instagram, QQ, QZone, Weibo, Twitter, Tumblr, Telegram, Re
ddit, Baidu Tieba, LinkedIn, LINE, Snapchat, Pinterest, Viber, MeWe, and VK.
Observers have noted a range of positive and negative impacts of social media use.
Social media can help to improve an individual's sense of connectedness with real
or onlinecommunities and can be an effective communication (or marketing) tool for
corporations, entrepreneurs, non-profit organizations, advocacy groups, political
parties, and governments.

HISTORY OF FACEBOOK
Facebook, Inc. is an American online social media and social networking service company
based in Menlo Park, California. It was founded by Mark Zuckerberg, along with fellow Harvard
College students and roommates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin
Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. It is considered one of the Big Four technology companies along
with Amazon, Apple, and Google.[10][11]
The founders initially limited the website's membership to Harvard students and
subsequently Columbia, Stanford, and Yalestudents. Membership was eventually expanded to
the remaining Ivy League schools, MIT, and higher education institutions in the Boston area, then
various other universities, and lastly high school students. Since 2006, anyone who claims to be
at least 13 years old has been allowed to become a registered user of Facebook, though this
may vary depending on local laws. The name comes from the face book directories often given
to American university students. Facebook held its initial public offering(IPO) in February 2012,
valuing the company at $104 billion, the largest valuation to date for a newly listed public
company. Facebook makes most of its revenue from advertisements that appear onscreen and
in users' News Feeds.
The Facebook service can be accessed from devices with Internet connectivity, such as personal
computers, tablets and smartphones. After registering, users can create a customized profile
revealing information about themselves. They can post text, photos and multimedia which is
shared with any other users that have agreed to be their "friend". Users can also use various
embedded apps, join common-interest groups, and receive notifications of their friends' activities.
Facebook claimed that had more than 2.3 billion monthly active users as of December
2018.[12] However, it faces a big problem of fake accounts. It caught 3 billion fake accounts in the
last quarter of 2018 and the first quarter of 2019.[13] Many critics questioned whether Facebook
knows how many actual users it has.[14][15][13] Facebook is one of the world's most valuable
companies.
It receives prominent media coverage, including many controversies. These often involve user
privacy (as with the Cambridge Analytica data scandal), political manipulation (as with the 2016
U.S. elections), psychological effects such as addiction and low self-esteem, and content that
some users find objectionable, including fake news, conspiracy theories, and copyright
infringement.[16] Facebook also does not remove false information from its pages, which brings
continuous controversies.[17]Commentators have stated that Facebook helps to spread false
information and fake news

History of Instagram
Instagram (also known as IG or Insta[9]) is a photo and video-sharing social networking
service owned by Facebook, Inc. It was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, and
launched in October 2010 exclusively on iOS. A version for Android devices was released a
year and half later, in April 2012, followed by a feature-limited website interface in November
2012, and apps for Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 in April 2016 and October 2016
respectively. The app allows users to upload photos and videos to the service, which can be
edited with various filters, and organized with tags and location information. An account's
posts can be shared publicly or with pre-approved followers. Users can browse other users'
content by tags and locations, and view trending content. Users can "like" photos, and follow
other users to add their content to a feed.
The service was originally distinguished by only allowing content to be framed in a square
(1:1) aspect ratio, but these restrictions were eased in 2015. The service also
added messaging features, the ability to include multiple images or videos in a single post,
as well as "Stories"—similar to its main competitor Snapchat—which allows users to post
photos and videos to a sequential feed, with each post accessible by others for 24 hours
each. As of January 2019, the Stories feature is being used by 500 million users daily.[10]
After its launch in 2010, Instagram rapidly gained popularity, with one million registered
users in two months, 10 million in a year, and 1 billion as of May 2019. In April 2012,
Facebook acquired the service for approximately US$1 billion in cash and stock. As of
October 2015, over 40 billion photos had been uploaded to the service. Although praised for
its influence, Instagram has been the subject of criticism, most notably for policy
and interface changes, allegations of censorship, and illegal or improper content uploaded
by users.

History of Whatsapp
WhatsApp was founded in 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, former employees of Yahoo!.
After leaving Yahoo! in September 2007, they took some time off in South America.[8] At one
point, they applied for jobs at Facebook but were rejected.[8]
In January 2009, after purchasing an iPhone and realizing the potential of the app industry on
the App Store, Koum and Acton began visiting Koum's friend Alex Fishman in West San Jose to
discuss a new type of messaging app that would "[show] statuses next to individual names of the
people". They realized that to take the idea further, they'd need an iPhone developer. Fishman
visited RentACoder.com, found Russian developer Igor Solomennikov, and introduced him
to Koum.
Koum named the app WhatsApp to sound like "what's up". On February 24, 2009, he
incorporated WhatsApp Inc. in California. However, when early versions of WhatsApp
kept crashing, Koum considered giving up and looking for a new job. Acton encouraged him to
wait for a "few more months".[54]
In June 2009, Apple launched push notifications, allowing users to be pinged when they were not
using an app. Koum changed WhatsApp so that when a user's status is changed, everyone in
the user's network would be notified.[8] WhatsApp 2.0 was released with a messaging component
and the number of active users suddenly increased to 250,000. Although Acton was managing
another startup, he decided to join the company.[8] In October 2009, Acton persuaded five former
friends at Yahoo! to invest $250,000 in seed funding, and Acton became a co-founder and was
given a stake. He officially joined WhatsApp on November 1.[8] After months at beta stage, the
application launched in November 2009, exclusively on the App Store for the iPhone. Koum then
hired a friend in Los Angeles, Chris Peiffer, to develop a BlackBerry version, which arrived two
months later.[8]
To cover the primary cost of sending verification texts to users, WhatsApp was changed from a
free service to a paid one. In December 2009, the ability to send photos was added to the iPhone
version. By early 2011, WhatsApp was one of the top 20 apps at Apple's U.S. App Store.[8]
In April 2011, Sequoia Capital invested about $8 million for more than 15% of the company, after
months of negotiation with Sequoia partner Jim Goetz.[55][56][57]
By February 2013, WhatsApp had about 200 million active users and 50 staff members. Sequoia
invested another $50 million, and WhatsApp was valued at $1.5 billion.[8]
In a December 2013 blog post, WhatsApp claimed that 400 million active users used the service
each month.[58]
