A) What is power electronics? Discuss briefly the concept of power electronics with the help of block
diagram.
B) Discuss switching characteristics of a thyristor with necessary waveforms.
C) Describe the different modes of operation of a thyristor with the help of static I-V characteristic.

D) Explain working of single phase half wave controlled rectifier circuit with RL and freewheeling
diode type load with necessary waveform and derivations.

Q.3 A) Explain the principle of working of a single phase half bridge inverter with the help of the circuit (07)
diagram and waveforms for both resistive and inductive loads.
B) Describe the principle of step-up/step down chopper. Derive an expression for its average output (08)
voltage.

B) A step up/step down chopper has input dc voltage of 220 V and output voltage of 660 V. If the (08)
conduction time of thyristor chopper is 120 µs, compute the pulse width of load voltage. In case
pulse width of load voltage is increased to three times its previous width, for constant frequencies
operation, calculate the new value of average output voltage.
