Two years ago, the “Brew In
Livingston” business compe-
tition sought to create a craft
beer trail in Livingston County
by providing grant funding and
low-interest loans to help craft
breweries begin operations.
Four winners were named on
St. Patrick’s Day 2017, and the
county’s economic develop-
ment office worked with three
additional breweries to further
their business plans.
This fall eight stops are
available as part of the “Liv-
ingston Libation Loop.”
Genesee, Orleans and Wyo-
ming counties are also estab-
lishing their own selection of
wineries, craft breweries and
ciderworks.
The GLOW region finds it-
self a short drive away from
both Finger Lakes and Niagara
wine countries, two regions of
New York State known world-
wide for distinctive tastes.
Finger Lakes Wine Coun-
try is centered around Cayu-
ga, Keuka and Seneca lakes.
The two little Finger Lakes in
Livingston County also have
wineries. Deer Run Winery on
Conesus Lake in Geneseo and
Eagle Crest Winery on Hem-
lock Lake have both earned
awards in international com-
petitions.
The Niagara Wine Trail has
grown to include locations in
Orleans County.

The calendar is about to
flip over to autumn, but that
doesn’t mean an end to festi-
val season. Before you think
its time to head indoors, know
that there is still plenty to do
outside.
Autumn is looking great with
the slew of festivals and special
events planned over the next
two months in the four-county
GLOW region.
For the nature lovers, there
are fall foliage excursions.
For artists, there is the annu-
al Letchworth Arts and Crafts
Show and Sale. And for those
who like the dark side of Hallow-
een, there are plenty of haunted
houses and ghost walks.
Whatever you enjoy, you
should be able to find it. And
you won’t have to travel far to
get there.
Here’s a look at the season’s
festivals and special events:
Sept. 5
Alexander
The Western New York Gas &
Steam Engine Association Rally:
The annual Western New York
Gas & Steam Engine Rally runs
Sept. 5 to 8 at the organization’s
grounds. The gates are open
from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday,

WNY Gas & Steam Association Rally returns

ALEXANDER — The annu-
al Western New York Gas &
Steam Association Rally returns
for its 53rd year from Sept. 5.
This year’s event will honor
“all things steam” machines as
well as have live music, a two-
acre flea market, daily tractor
pulls, parades, farming equip-
ment from the past 100 years
and more. Among the featured
steam machines will be demon-
strations of sawmill and grain
threshing powered by steam
engines.
The WNY Gas & Steam En-
gine Association hosts the an-
nual rally on their grounds lo-
cated at 10294 Gillate Road, just
15 minutes south of Batavia.
Hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thurs-
day through Saturday and 9 a.m.
to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission
is $8 for adults and free for chil-
dren 12. Parking is free as well.
Since 1967, Western New
York families have attended the
rally to explore over 100 years
of farming equipment history,
bargain with 170 vendors at the
two-acre flea market and enjoy
classic fair foods, a huge raffle
with over 200 baskets and daily
demonstrations. Demonstra-

EASY DOES IT
In an effort to keep their teeth clean and white, some people
exert excessive pressure on their toothbrushes and/or use overly
abrasive toothpastes and powders. This does more harm than
good. The fact is that plaque (sticky bacterial film) is soft enough
that minimal pressure on the brush, along with the detergents
and mild abrasives in most toothpastes are all that is needed
to remove it. Brushing harder does not help achieve a deeper
clean, may cause sensitive gum tissue to recede, and can even
erode tooth enamel. Proper brushing merely requires holding
a soft-bristled at a 45-degree angle to the gum-line and using
short, gentle strokes to clean one section of teeth at a time.
Give your delicate gums a break – treat them kindly with proper
care and they’ll reward you with years of optimal oral health.

How do leaves change color? Festivals

The colorful hues of fall will
soon be upon us.
The change in leaf color
from bright green to brilliant
red, orange and yellow fol-
lows a predictable pattern
in New York State. In West-
ern New York and the Finger
Lakes, the color change typ-
ically arrives the last week of
September and reaches its
peak in the second or third
week of October.
It takes about two weeks for
the colors to complete their
cycles in any given area, with
peak brilliance lasting three
to four days in any one spot.
Leaves typically begin the
change first in the Adiron-
dack and Catskill mountain
regions in late August and
early September. The color
changes continue to spread
out and down the state, end-
ing on Long Island in late Oc-
tober or early November.
Autumn color is complex.
Seasonal conditions and the
resultant chemical changes
in the leaves are the key fac-
tors in the timing and color-
ation.
A season of adequate rain-
fall and amicable tempera-
tures, a growing season that
was mild and favorable, and
the hot days-cold nights of
late August and early Septem-
ber set the stage for fantastic
foliage.
Conditions such as the
summer drought of 2016 can
cause leaves to change ear-
lier and leave trees without
enough strength to hold on
to their leaves. As a result, fo-
liage season comes and goes
quickly.
In 2017, an outbreak of for-
est tent caterpillars, which
have a taste for sugar maple
leaves, left gaps in fall foliage
in northern New York. The
caterpillars caused defoli-
ation and possible death of
sugar maples. Leaf peepers
saw large bare patches in the
usual autumn panorama of
yellow, orange and red as
there were simply no leaves
left to take part in the season-
al color change.

there is a frost. The latter has
the most potential harm for
foliage displays as a frost will
cause large amounts of leaves
to fall from the trees.
Three chemicals within
the leaves - chlorophyll, ca-
rotenoids and anthocyanins
- are involved in the annu-
al color change. During the
growing season, most tree
leaves are green because
they’re full of chlorophyll.
The high amount of chloro-
phyll obscures other leaf pig-
ments, carotenoids (which
produce yellow, orange and
brown colors) and anthocya-
nins (which provide reds and
purples). As temperatures

Area runs, walks raise awareness and funds
The Geneseo Trio, which
began with the running of
the Oak Tree races on Labor
Day weekend, will be com-
pleted during the month of
September for the first time
in several autumns.
In past years, the partner
races have been scheduled
into October.
The next race in the trio is
the Arc of Livingston Wyo-
ming’s annual 5K Run/Walk
in memory of Ramon Rocha.
The series concluded with
the running of the Friday
Knight 5K on Sept. 20 on the
campus of SUNY Geneseo.
In recent seasons, the Ro-
cha Race has been the Trio’s
finale. Prior to 2016, though,
it had been run in mid-Sep-
tember.
“We looked at the history
of the run/walk and found
that participation is gener-
ally higher when the race is
held in September,” said Jeff
Thomas, public relations di-
rector for The Arc of Living-
ston-Wyoming.
The event’s peak partici-
pation was in 2015, when the
race was Sept. 13 and more
than 200 runners finished
the race.
“So for 2019, we chose to
move the date of the race
back to September to give
more people the opportunity
to take part,” Thomas said.
At the conclusion of the
three races there are awards
for the Trio’s overall fastest
competitors among those
runners who participated in
all three events. Combining
their times for all three races
last year, Brian Wall of Gen-
eseo and Jennifer Apple of
Livonia earned top honors
as fastest male and female.
Wall’s total time was 71 min-
utes, 22 seconds; Apple’s was
73 minutes, 1 second.

kets head into the fall, the mar-
kets remain in full swing.
The wet weather pushed
some vegetables back to later in
the season and some ended up

Post No. 532 of the American
Legion is planning a celebra-
tion for Sept. 13 and 14 in the
Village Park.
Live music, food and family
activities will be among the at-
tractions — planning was still
underway last week, as a mat-
ter of fact.
“Our primary mission obvi-
ously is veterans and veterans
affairs,” said Dan Walczak, an
Army veteran who currently
serves as the post’s centennial
celebration chairman. “But we
also have extensive programs
for children and youth, and
trying to maintain the ideals of
America, and we also believe in
maintaining our national de-
fense. Those are the four pillars
we were built on, and I think in
the long run what we need to
do now is reassert our role in all
that to the community, so peo-
ple fully understand what the
American Legion is.”
Warsaw’s post is named af-
ter Walter Klein, who served in
France during World War I. He
was killed by a German artillery
round during the Battle of Fis-
mes in August 1918.
Klein was the only Warsaw
resident to die in combat, and
the post was established in his
name soon after the war ended.
Although the post has
evolved with the times, it re-
mains the same to a large de-
gree — the same mission and
a similar group of dedicated
veterans who care,” said Post

an Air Force veteran. The post
was recently recognized for its
service to youth — notably its
Boys State program — but also
its support of the Boy Scouts, a
junior marksmanship program,

ston County’s annual cele-
bration of agriculture, will be
hosted by Mulligan Farms, 5403
Barber Rd., this year.
The event, scheduled from
11 a.m. to 3 p.m., features a day
of family activities and tours as
it educates residents about the
work of local farmers.
Farm Fest draws thousands
of visitors to an area farm each
fall.
Typically, the event features
displays of large farm equip-
ment – a draw to both young
children and the not so young,
wagon rides, and tours where
participants learn about tech-
nology and advancements in

blestone Museum to step back
in time from 1 to 5 p.m. with
the Cobblestone Museum
Ghost Walk and visit sever-
al “ghosts” connected to the
museum’s past. Tour guides
will lead you through a walking
tour of about a dozen different
locations on the Museum’s
campus, including the cobble-
stone schoolhouse, the oldest
cobblestone church in North
America, and a cobblestone
parsonage, all National Histor-
ic Landmarks. Along the way
guests will “meet” apparitions
of such notables as newspaper
editor Horace Greeley, William
Babbitt who superintended
the construction of District #5
Cobblestone Schoolhouse and
became Town Supervisor and
served in the NYS Assembly;
and Rev. Stephen Smith who
gave the dedicatory address
at the opening of the Cobble-
stone Universalist Church in
