MY09 NEW FEATURES AND IMPROVEMENTS FOR ALLISON TRANSMISSIONS

Allison Transmission, Inc. is pleased to announce new product features for MY 2009 transmissions that include
prognostic capabilities for most 1000/2000/3000/4000 Product Families transmissions. As the world leader of
commercial medium and heavy-duty transmissions, Allison Transmission, Inc. has added these features as a part of
the on-going continuous improvement efforts.

C The MY09 features include:

M
Oil Life Monitor—determines fluid life remaining by monitoring various operating parameters
Filter Life Monitor—determines when fluid filter(s) need to be replaced
Y

CM

MY Transmission Health Monitor—determines when clutch maintenance is required

SECTION I: Summary of the MY09 Features
 Oil Life, Filter Life, and Transmission Health monitoring prognostics will be available on Allison
Transmission non-seven speed products beginning in July of 2008.
 These new prognostics features will only be available with TES 295 fluids at this time. Additional
requirements are outlined in each product family section to follow.
1000 and 2000 Product Families

o Transmission—A new E number will not be required if a Customer wants to implement prognostics
for MY09. A new E number cannot be released as there are no transmission hardware changes.
o TCM and Calibration—A new TCM will be required and the type designation will change from A40
to A50, A41 to A51, A42 to A52, and A43 to A53 whether implementing prognostics or not. This
will mean that a current calibration of A4X will become A5X with MY09 change. This change does
not affect the function of the calibration. If prognostics will be used, then a new MY09 calibration
will be required to be released via eCSS.
o For those Customers who order non-calibrated TCMs, new part numbers will be released for these
new TCMs and the new part number will have to be ordered. The current blank TCM P/Ns will no
longer be manufactured after April 2008. (See Section IV for P/N information). Therefore, orders for
Pre-MY09 TCMs must be made by April 29, 2008 for shipment by June 27, 2008.
— The new calibration A5X cannot be loaded into an A4X TCM and an A4X calibration cannot be
loaded into an A5X TCM. However, the TCM Reflash Tool will have “smart detect”
functionality and will ensure the correct calibration is loaded into the correct TCM.

o For those Customers who order calibrated TCMs, a new part number will be released for these new
calibrated TCMs.
— Customers who order calibrations by the Allison P/N:
A new Calibration P/N will be released in the System for all Customers because the prefix is
changing for MY09, regardless if prognostics are enabled or not.
— Customers who order calibrations by the Customer P/N:
No action is required, since all Customers’ P/Ns will be remapped to the new MY09 A5X
calibration P/N, unless the Customer chooses to change the Customer P/N, which will require a
new calibration be released via eCSS.

o Shift Selector—A new shift selector will not be required.

o Connection—If using prognostics, a Customer-furnished dedicated J1939 Service Transmission
indicator (wrench symbol) or J1939 text display with optional generic J1939 Service Transmission
indicator is required. Refer to Tech Data for further information.
3000 and 4000 Product Families
o Transmission—A new E number will be required if a Customer wants to implement prognostics. If
prognostics are not enabled, a new E number will not be required to be released. The new
transmission feature required for prognostics is the valve body module which is specified depending
on the selection of a 2 inch or 4 inch sump. The new feature names for prognostics are:
— MD_SMP_2OLSP 2 INCH SUMP WITH OIL LEVEL SENSOR with PROGNOSTICS
— MD_SMP_4OLSP 4 INCH SUMP WITH OIL LEVEL SENSOR with PROGNOSTICS
o TCM and Calibration—A new TCM will be required and the type designation will change from A40
to A50, A41 to A51, A42 to A52, and A43 to A53 whether implementing prognostics or not. This
will mean that a current calibration of A4X will become A5X with MY09. This change does not
affect the function of the calibration. If prognostics will be used, then a new MY09 calibration will
be required to be released via eCSS.

o For those Customers who order non-calibrated TCMs, new part numbers will be released for these
new parts and the new part number will have to be ordered. The current blank TCM P/Ns will no
longer be manufactured after April 2008 (see Section IV for P/N information). Therefore, orders for
Pre-MY09 TCMs must be made by April 29, 2008 for shipment by June 27, 2008.

— Customers who order calibrations by the Allison P/N:

A new Calibration P/N will be released in the System for all Customers because the prefix is
changing for MY09, regardless if prognostics are enabled or not.
— Customers who order calibrations by the Customer P/N:
No action is required, since all Customers’ P/Ns will be remapped to the new MY09 A5X
calibration P/N, unless the Customer chooses to change the Customer P/N, which will require a
new calibration release via eCSS.
o Shift Selector—New shift selectors will be released for MY09 transmissions. New MY09 shift
selectors will have new P/Ns. A new shift selector must be ordered whether prognostics are
implemented or not. The current shift selector will function with MY09 transmissions so long as
prognostics are not enabled. Current shift selector P/Ns will no longer be available after
June 27, 2008. MY09 shift selectors will have backwards compatibility (see Section IV).
o Connection—If using prognostics, a wire must be added in the transmission to TCM wiring harness.
A J1939 vehicle display is optional since the new shift selectors provide the required prognostic
indicator (wrench symbol). Refer to Tech Data for further information.

SECTION V: New Features / Questions for eCSS

For the purpose of pre-releasing P/Ns, during the time frame of April to July 2008, eCSS will have the ability to
create non-salable MY09 calibrations. This will allow current production MY08 calibrations to be made and allow
the user to begin creating calibrations for MY09 at the same time in the eCSS tool. These calibrations will not be
available for download and ship until June 13, 2008.
There will be some new questions added to the eCSS tool for the enabling of prognostics within the calibration for
MY09. Those new questions are shown below:

Question: Answers:
Transmission Fluid Type TranSynd™ / TES 295 Fluid
Other Fluids
This question will be new for MY09 and will be required to be answered.
If TranSynd™ / TES 295 Fluid is chosen then the next question will appear and will be required to be answered:
Enable Prognostics? Yes
No
If Yes is chosen then the next question will appear and will be required to be answered:
Prognostics Reset by Service Tool Only? Yes
No
Please refer to Allison Tech Data on the Allison Extranet for more detailed information regarding the MY09 features
for Allison Transmission products. If further information is required, please contact your Allison Transmission
Representative.
