The what of learning is addressed by having visual diagrams and visual notions of music and sound, present key concepts in symbolic and alternate forms, emphasis key elements in diagrams and graphs, questions that draw attention to key concepts. The how of learning is addressed by having a guide to lead learning, compose in multiple media like text, speech, images, and music, and provides students with spell check and recording. Spring 2018_SJB Instructional Software The why of learning is addressed by providing opportunities for collaboration, providing recording devices for students to collect data, and providing students autonomy by providing choices.
Lesson idea implementation:
Students will work in groups and will pick their favorite song. Students in groups will use the software while playing the song to create a sine graph which they will analysis different characteristics of. Students will then create a digital presentation so they can present their findings to the class, using software like PowerPoint, or Prezi. The teacher will facilitate and help give support to groups who need help with the activity. This will take one to two class periods for them to do and present. Student learning will be assessed during their presentation when they are required to share out their findings with the class. Depending on the groups understanding from the assessment, the teacher will be able to differentiate learning for the other two trig functions to help support the groups who struggled more. Student learning can be extended to higher learning level by having them explore beyond the just looking at characteristics of one graph to trying to manipulate how different sound frequencies or notes affect the characteristics they need to identify. The lesson will be concluded with students reflecting and sharing out on their peers’ findings. They will share things they agree with, disagree with, find interesting, or want to know more about. Since this is a group project, there will be a rubric provided to guide them through the expectations. The teacher will provide feedback through the rubric and comments written to the side based on the group’s presentations. Reflective Practice: The activities created can impact students learning by providing a project that engages them and allows them to connect to an abstract math concept like trig functions. This lesson can be extended to the other trig functions while they do not show up in music necessarily a similar project can be created that lets the students explore the trig function in real-world scenarios. There are many different tools that can be used, one of them being a Desmos activity where students focus on notes on the piano and the resulting frequency graph.
