LNG Bunkering is a recent development due to Emission Control Area (ECA)

From Emission Control point of

view, we have:
1. ECA zones: US coast, North
Sea, Baltic Sea
2. New ECA zones
3. Outside ECA zones

POINTS TO NOTE:
- But ships trade across all zones.
- LNG bunkering terminals are being set up in existing ECA and new ECA zones.
- These are expensive infrastructures and need high degree of safety issues to be addressed.
- Non-ECA zones, which are generally developing nations, have no priority to set up such
infrastructure.
- This is holding up progress of adopting LNG as ship’s fuel in most parts of non-ECA zones,
although LNG is available in many of these areas.
- So ships, specially small and medium sized, should be designed to suit this scenario.

INFRASTRUCTURE (WORLDWIDE)

Source: ABS report titled “Bunkering of Liquefied Natural Gas-Fueled Marine Vessels in North America

FOR NON-
NON-ECA ZONE OUR PROPOSAL IS:
1. SHIP TO SHIP TRADITONAL BUNKERING FROM AN LNG BUNKERING SHIP
2. SWAPPABLE 20 FT OR 40 FT ISO LNG CONTAINERS WHICH CAN BE HANDLED AND SWAPPED AT ANY
CONVENTIONAL WHARF FACILITY.

THE ROAD AHEAD……..

At present NAVNAUTIK has developed two designs based on two completely different
bunkering methods to suit specific operational scenarios.

A. For larger & medium-sized vessels:

- DUAL FUEL 5000m3 LNG / 5000 m3 MDO/HFO bunkering vessel
- DUAL FUEL 3600m3 LNG / 2000 m3 MDO/HFO bunkering vessel
i.e. a Two- in-one approach

B. 90T (max) bollard pull DUAL FUEL tug with:

- Swappable 20 feet ISO LNG tank containers (160 m3 LNG capacity)
- in-built LNG tanks (140 m3 LNG capacity)

AVAILABLE OPTIONS FOR LNG BUNKERING
AS PER NAVNAUTIK’S DESIGN PROPOSALS
1
2

3 NAVNAUTIK PTE LTD, SINGAPORE

1. Ship-to-Ship LNG bunkering will diversify with each passing day to suit the
fleet requirements and hence LNG bunkering infrastructure will gather
momentum as new ECA zones are designated with each passing day.

2. LNG fueled tugs will find a foothold in harbor operations to tackle the
stringent emission norms at LNG terminals and ECA zones, hence a strong
emphasis would be on design optimization of these LNG tanks to ensure
minimum re-fueling time at terminals.

3. Main objective is to make it easier for industry to adopt LNG as ship’s fuel (by
bringing the LNG to the vessel) as the investment for LNG terminal seems
expensive and few are interested to invest. So ship-to-ship bunkering as well
as ISO tank swapping has got a better chance to attract bunker operators and
vessel owners. NAVNAUTIK PTE LTD, SINGAPORE
