NAME: SCORE:_____________

Introduction:

Earth science is the name for all the sciences that collectively seek to understand
Earth and its neighbors in space. To understand Earth is not an easy task because
our planet is not static and unchanging. Rather it is a dynamic body with many
interacting parts and a long and complex history.

This activity involves the understanding of the nature of earth science and the
different fields of discipline that comprises it.

Objectives:

1) To be able to have a basic overview of the different discipline involved in earth

science.
2) To be able to locate resources that can enhance our learning of earth science.
3) To be able to connect the field of earth science with environmental science.

Procedure:

1) Copy the table provided in the next page.

2) Go to the library or the internet and fill up the necessary spaces in the table.
3) Answer the question provided at the end of the exercise.

Discussion:

1. How is earth science connected to environmental science?

-. Earth science is a field that includes geology, astronomy, meteorology, and

oceanography. Earth science is likely connected to environmental science. Hence,
environmental science is the study of the effects of natural and unnatural processes,
and of interactions of the physical components of the planet on the environment. The
nature and extent of our interactions with the natural environment have a profound
impact on human well-being

2. If you are to choose what type of earth scientist would you be, which of these
would you be, geologist, seismologist, volcanologist, archeologist, oceanographer, or
meteorologist? Why?

-I’d like to be a geologist. Geology can be a very interesting and rewarding career
and as an environmental student I’d like to know more about the history of our planet.
The better to understand Earth’s history, the better I can foresee how events and
processes of the past might influence the future. Today we are concerned about
climate change. Many geologists are working to learn about the past climates of
Earth and how they have changed across time. This historical geology news
information is valuable to understand how our current climate is changing, and what
the results might be and use scientific reasoning to find out how things work to avoid
such disasters.
