HISTORICAL BACKGROUND of KAWIT, CAVITE

Kawit, Cavite, long before the rule and


conquest of Spaniards, was already a
growing and well develop municipality. It is
the oldest municipality in Cavite province
that has been established in 1587 and
oldest of the three parishes established
during the administration of Manila
Archbishop Garcia Serrano (1618-1629).

Cavite City, Imus, and Noveleta was once a territory of Kawit.

The town was used by the Spaniards as their first anchorage in Cavite province. It was located in
another part of Kawit, which former town and is in the present day known as Cavity City, where
deep waters suitable for a port navy yard, and the repair and construction of ships and galleon.
This is also where the navy base or Sangley point is located. they renamed the town Cavite el
Viejo, to distinguish it from Cavite Nuevo, Cavite la Punta or Cavite el Puerto, the commercial port
and naval base at the Fuerza de San Felipe Neri.

Just a short distance from Cavite navy was a place now known as Noveleta and was during their
time called “Tierra Alta”, which is because of its higher elevation, fine stream, cool climate, and
rich vegetation that becomes a place of vacation and hunting grounds for Spanish
conquistadores. The municipality of Noveleta succeeded from Kawit in 1908.

The name Kawit is originated based on the Hook-shaped shoreline from Manila to Sangley Point
in Cavite City. So, the word hook in Filipino term is kalawit or kawit.

The Cavite became the most important port that linked the Philippines islands to the rest of the
world because it became the main staging ground for the large galleons during the Manila-
Acapulco Galleon Trade. Kawit and Bacoor had large populations of Chinese traders and so
became a major center for exchange where silk and porcelain with goods are being traded from
New World and Spain. The Creole language called Chabacano was no wonder developed in
Cavite with the vibrant mix of traders, Spanish seamen, and local residents.
Kawit, Cavite had built up terrible notoriety as a shady area of town, with Spanish marines on
