STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

I wish to introduce myself as Salin Shrestha, a prospective student aspiring to purse my Masters
in Civil Engineering program for 2019. With the impressive feedback from my friend “Mr. Satish
Paudel” who is currently pursing for his doctoral degree in your esteemed university and, while
pursuing the internet extensively I gathered valuable information on the courses listed by you. This
made me want to be part of your university even more. Hope if I am given the opportunity to study
in the university, I would an asset to the university.

I, from my earlier days in engineering, was very passionate about structure engineering especially
the finite element method. I am very passionate about reinforced concrete, and steel structures as
well. I wish to specialize in one of the three fields. I am constantly trying to learn about the micro-
modelling and trying read as much journals as possible.
As I wanted to study more about the construction of building in the safest and effective way, I
went for structural analysis of apartment building as my final year project. The project was entitled,
“Analysis and Design of Earthquake Resistance Multistoried Apartment Building”. As the
graduate school offers a chance to advance your understanding of those topics that has fascinated
you as an undergraduate, I have very high hopes that I would gain knowledge about the
fundamental principles of structure and structure related interface. This interdisciplinary inquiries
offer the most exciting opportunities for study at the graduate level.
Belonging to an underdeveloped nation Nepal with very limited infrastructures, I hope my
expertise through my study in your esteemed university would also be of some help to my country.
Nepal is also one of the seismically vulnerable places in the world. It clings to the slopes of the
seismically unstable Himalayas. On 25th April 2015, a moment magnitude of 7.8 with an epicenter
at Gorkha, caused widespread destruction and causalities. The total casualties included: 870 deaths
and 22,300 injured and it was estimated the total value of damages and losses caused by the
earthquake was US$7 billion. I was also rendered homeless post the earthquake due to severe
structural damage .Luckily we were all safe. This appalling event is one of major factor for me to
obtain the expertise in this field of study. The field I am most interested in is durability, repair and
retrofit of concrete structure, modelling of concrete behavior, and earthquake engineering. I really
do hope I gain a good insight of them.

Thus, I believe Thammasat University is the destination where I can quench my thirst for all the
curiosities I am having regarding the structure and structural behavior, which remained
unanswered at my undergraduate level. I hope I make this institution very proud someday if given
the opportunity.
