About the Village and Previous Visit:

Mahabla is a Village in Seloo Taluka in Wardha District of Maharashtra State, India. It belongs
to Vidarbh region. It belongs to Nagpur Division. The population of the village is 2329 of
which 1182 are males while 1147 are females as per Population Census 2011.
Agriculture is the main profession of this village. Still this village is waiting for Industrial
development.
The agenda of the visit was to find out the social problems and come up with solutions to
press the problems and explore the rural empowerment for socio-economic change.
The purpose of group was to stay with the people and be a part of them so as to give them a
comfort zone that in turn will let them open up about their problems and issues so that the
group can focus on creating value for them.

The following issues were highlighted by the Sarpanch and the villagers during the visit:

● Shortage of water supply which leads to irrigation problems

● Problem of proper sanitation and hygiene (Underutilisation of washrooms)
● Problem of Public Transport
● Less development of market in the village
● Unfair price of crops sold in the market
● Loss of existing government schools in Mahabala due to existence of private schools in
Seloo (5 KM from Mahabala)

Plan of Action

➢ For improving water supply, we need to raise community awareness mentioning the
importance of water with the use of posters because everyone in the village doesn’t
understand the written language so it’s better to make them aware through visual
representation. Awareness of wastewater treatment and reuse systems for treating
domestic effluent. We can also try to undertake training of teachers in the village in order
to make the villagers know the usage of advanced concepts and practices to plan, design, and
carry out monitoring and evaluation of rural water supply and sanitation schemes.

➢ According to the information provided, villagers in Mahabala are still not free from open
defecation. Villagers do the practice of defecating outside rather than into a toilet because
either they do not have a toilet readily accessible at their home or due to traditional
cultural practices. We can aware the villagers about Swachh Bharat Mission and bring
behavioural change by showing them a Sanitation Campaign. We can request the
authorities to construct toilet in public areas for people who live on rent and do not have
access to toilet. But the collective renunciation of open defecation will only be achieved
through the modification of the social convention which regulates the practice of the
group. We need to make such people understand the benefits of total sanitation (health &
hygiene). We can encourage majority of people to declare the end of open defecation.
Our main objective is to make them aware and provide safe sanitation using video made
specifically targeted to them.
➢ There was an ongoing problem of not getting adequate rate for their crops due to
presence of middle man in the business. The problem has subsequently reduced since the
last visit. This season has witnessed an increase in crop like Sugarcane, Soyabean, Gram
seeds due to sufficient rainfall. We are trying to implement a plan of action where we will
make them aware of various Kishan plans that has initiated by govt of India.
➢ We are also trying to understand the various other problem areas from which
employment can be generated. This can be done by pulling in resources from the people
who once used to reside there but has shifted elsewhere due to better employment or
livelihood opportunity but have there family settled in the village.
