CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

“Making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.”

Ephesians 5:16, ESV. This is a verse in which one can reflect his own self

that he must use his time properly. Avoiding unnecessary things and being

productive everyday is something that everyone must always keep in their

minds.

The advanced technology we are having right now has brought a lot

of changes to our lives. It became helpful to everyone especially to the

students. Everything became easy as 1-2-3 and almost everything today

is an instant. Technology had also brought us social media which is being

used by a lot of people in our current generation.

According to Investopedia, social media facilitates partaking various

information and ideas, and is a computer-based technology which builds

virtual networks. It is also internet-based by design and it offers easy

electronic communication for users and it can also contain some of their

personal information as well as videos and photos of them. Users become

involve in social media via computer, tablet or smartphone via web-based

software or web application, often utilizing it for messaging.

Originally, social media was just a tool that people used to keep in

touch with their friends and family but was later adopted by businesses

that wanted to take advantage of a popular new communication method

to reach out to customers. Social media has the power and ability to share

information and connect with anyone in every part of the world. As long

as there is social media, unending communication is surely always

available. Individuals who has social media often use it to communicate

with their loved ones especially when they are afar them or when they

aren’t with them. It also helps them in having new friends as well as

looking for people having the same interests with them. These people who

engage in these activities are a part of the virtual social network. According

to Smart Insights, people desire to reveal valuable and entertaining

content to others, to define themselves and to grow and nourish

relationships.

Students nowadays find social media as a necessity. Almost all of

them can’t live without having their own social media accounts. A study

shows that an average student now spends more time each day on their

phone and computer than they do in sleeping.

Access the globe, mobile devices dominate total minutes spent

online, passing 90% in Indonesia. The percentage of mobile share of total

digital minutes in USA is 71%, 62% in Canada, 61% in UK, 67% in Spain,

64% in Italy, 72% in Brazil, 75% in Mexico, and 71% in China. (Smart

Insights)

People share information on social media to support a cause or

issues they feel strongly about, to pass valuable information, to build

image and demonstrate who they are and what they stand for, to interact,

grow and get a sense of fulfillment, nurture relationships and stay in touch

with other and to participate and feel involved in things happening in the

world.

According to Rita Njoroge, the speed of Internet has changed the way

people receive the information. It combines the immediacy of broadcast

with the in-depth coverage of newspapers making it perfect sources for

news and weather information. Even with the multimedia excitement of

the web, Electronic mail (email) is the most frequently used application of

the Internet. Many people, who have access to the Internet at school, home

and at work place use the Internet for no other purpose than to send and

to receive the mail. It’s not just friends and co-workers that are receiving

email. Wherever you look, the web is providing email addresses. This has

made communication between the strangers easier than ever. Chatting is

one of the more popular activities on the Internet- people can talk to

anyone across the world.

In a study done at Stanford University, people who are prone to

various distractions and feel differences in their style of information are

those people who use social media frequently, as opposed to those who

don't frequently multi-task with social media. According to the results, the

latter were able allocate their attention more effectively despite many

distractions. This evidence shows how much frequent social media use can

alter our modes of thinking and attention span. It's no wonder we see

students popping Adderall in the library to get through a night's worth of

studying. They may not be frequent users of social media, but nonetheless,

they are still involved in a community of people whose habits shift to this

mindset, which affects the people around them.

Researchers at two German universities also found a highly negative

influence of Facebook on users' moods, ravaged by intermixed feelings of

envy and isolation. Amongst the 600 participants in the study, it was

found that photos of social interaction and vacationing were the second

most common cause of resentment and envy. It is not abnormal to feel so

disenfranchised when you see a bunch of your friends out and about, and

maybe you're just missing it.

Roselyn Santos, a clerk at National Commission on Indigenous

Peoples (NCIP), said to one of her studies that Filipinos are very social by

nature. Socialization has become internet based and highly technological

because of the current advances in technology. Along with the other less

favored social networking sites and applications like Twitter, commonly.

Aside from socialization, all sorts of organizations also utilize social media

in the Philippines. Government, non-government, educational and

business organizations now have their own Facebook and twitter

accounts. Politicians and celebrities also have accounts that Filipino

people now follow closely more than the local news. Stores and

independent

The study of Karpinski (2009) shows that users who spend more

time on SNSs like Facebook spend less time in studying. Hence, school

authorities are one of the primary people who oppose it’s use particularly

in schools, which is the reason why they usually ban it during class hours.

The teachers and administrators are likewise affected because of these

negative implications. Many schools have opted for strict restrictions on

SNSs usage in campuses amid concerns about safety, privacy and

confidentiality, and lack of knowledge about how best to ensure its

appropriate use. sellers create Facebook accounts to sell and advertise

their merchandise.

According to Domini Torrevillas of Philippine Star, one of the

negative effects of social media or network is it leads to addiction.

Spending countless hours on the social sites can divert the focus and
6

attention from a particular task. It lowers the motivational level of the

people, especially of the teenagers and students. They mainly rely on

technology and the internet instead of learning the practical knowledge

and expertise of the everyday life. Kids can be greatly affected by these

social networking sites if they are allowed to use them. The reason is that

sometimes people share photos on social media that contains violence and

sex, which can damage the behavior of kids and teenagers. It puts the

negative impact on overall society as these kids and teenagers involve

themselves in crime -related activities.

A lot of people nowadays, especially students have their own social

media accounts which are used by them in order to communicate with

other people, freely share and be updated on different information, find

new friends, etc. Having social media account have different pro’s as well

as con’s which affects the behavior of the students inside the classroom,

specifically, in the St. John’s Cathedral School.

Students of SJCS are really now into social media. This is evident

because a lot of them use phone during classes to check their accounts

and socialize with their friends outside the campus or even friends inside.

Students are considered as post-millennials and are most exposed on the

internet, especially on social media. Being said. Social media has affected

them, both psychologically and emotionally. Some posts often persuade

them do such things and break the rules and regulations of the school.

Particularly, their focus becomes out of hand because most students use

their phones during class just to surf the social media. The way that they

see the school and the faculty has been also influenced by social media.

The researchers had been motivated to conduct this study because

almost all the students inside the St. John’s Cathedral School have their

social media accounts on various sites including Facebook, Twitter,

Instagram, Tumblr, etc. This study would help in assessing the impact of

social media to the behavior of the students inside or outside their

classrooms. This could also help in decreasing the number of negative

effects of social media to the students but rather make them realize how

to properly use social media and making their everyday life in school

productive. The researchers would conduct an interview for some selected

students and their answers would be assessed by the researchers for them

to be aware of the impacts of social media to the way how students of SJCS

behave in the campus.

Importance of the Study

Students. This research will enlighten the students to become

aware of themselves as millennials who use social media. This will also
8

guide them with the proper usage of social media and how can it affect

their behavior.

Parents. This research can give reassurance to parents who care

greatly of their children’s welfare and to raise awareness for them to guide

their children in their usage of social media both inside and outside the

school.

Teachers. This research would help the teacher in becoming aware

of the behavioral changes in their students due to the effects of social

media. This would also help the teachers on how they would give their full

attention in managing their students in using social media.

School Administration. This research would help the

administration in coping with the effects of social media to students. This

would help them in having ideas to lessen negative effects of social media

to the students.

St. John’s Cathedral School. This research can inform the school

of possible adjustments and be aware of the impact of social media on

student behavior.

Researchers. This research can help us gain deeper understanding

and comprehension on how social media affect student behavior.

Future Researchers. This research can serve as additional source

information for people and to have a basis on the impact of social media

on student behavior.

Researchers’ Backgrounds

Consisting of six members, we, the researchers’ ages are 17-18 years

old are Grade 12 students of St. John’s Cathedral School Senior High

School. All of us are taking up the General Academic Strand (GAS). We

cannot deny that all of the students, including us have our own social

media accounts. We are using it to communicate faster because having

social media accounts is like almost having an instant to everything. We

are aware that social media have different pros and cons especially to us

students. But we would like to know more about its deeper effects to our

behavior because nowadays students can survive without spending their

time on social media. We were elementary pupils when social media

flourished in our generation and now, it became more popular affecting

many factors in a student’s life.

One of us had even became lazy because instead of using his spare

time on studying or other recreational activities outdoors, he prefers using

his phone and just click and click on his account. This is one of the cons

of social media to the behavior of the student. Being the millennials that

we are, embracing our generation, we are inclined with social media, our
10

newsfeed is our newspaper, we get updates with clicks and taps. Applying

posts in real life, specifically in school, is one of many problems we are

facing today. Posts that tell you to become rebellious, go against the rules,

saying that “it’s your life” is one thing why most students got an attitude

that is contrary to what the school administration wants us to act like.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to know the impact of social media on student

behavior. Specifically, it aimed to know the following:

1. How does social media affect the connections of students to

everyone?

2. How do the students cope with effects of social media?

3. How does social media affect students behaviorally?

CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

The methodology and research procedures that were used in this

study are introduced in this chapter. This includes the research design,

sources of data, population, instrumentation, data analysis and ethical

considerations. The study aimed to focus on the impact of social media on

student behavior. The following sections were included in this chapter. a)

Research Design, b) Sources of Data: Research Setting, Sampling, c)

Research Instrument: Instrumentation and Data Collection, Data

Gathering Procedure, d) Trustworthiness, and e) Data Management and

Analysis.

Research Design

Research design refers to the overall strategy that you choose to

integrate the different components of the study in a coherent and logical

way, thereby, ensuring you will effectively address the research problem,

we have chosen qualitative research as our research design.

Whenever research has to be done in order to measure a quality or

extent of something, qualitative research design is preferred. It is most

commonly used when traits like human behavior, preferences and

thoughts have to be analyzed. Whenever trend towards a particular

element has to be analyzed, qualitative research design is used. This is

12
Archdiocese of Lingayen – Dagupan Catholic Schools
ST. JOHN’S CATHEDRAL SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dagupan City, Philippines

important because not everything can be measured by putting them in

pre-decided mathematical formulas. For examples, a product is designed

based on preferences and requirements of people, this is obtained through

qualitative research. Questionnaires, surveys, case studies and interviews

are the examples of this type of research design. Qualitative research is a

type of social science research that collects and works with non-numerical

data and that seeks to interpret meaning from these data that help us

understand social life through the study of targeted populations or places.

(Abdulwahaab Alsaif, 2016)

According to Pale J. Husserl (2008), Phenomenology is a school of

thought that emphasizes a focus on people’s subjective experiences and

interpretations of the world. That is, the phenomenologist wants to

understand how the world appears to others. This will help us identify the

phenomena through how they are perceived by our informants.

In this study, we employed the phenomenological approach which

describes life experiences and meaning or the “subjective reality” of an

event. We have developed an understanding of the informants’ “reality”.

This approach also helped us in having a deeper understanding on the

positive and negative effects of social media of student behavior.

Research Setting

St. John’s Cathedral School, was named after the Patron Saint of

Dagupan City St. John the Apostle and Evangelist, is owned by the

Archdiocese of Lingayen Dagupan. Rising to meet the demand for a

Catholic education in this area, the school is founded in 1957 by Rev. Fr.

Jesus J. Sison (former Bishop of Tarlac). It started to operate in the month

of June of the same year offering Kindergarten, Elementary and Secondary

courses as well. It was originally a Catholic School for the boys only. In

1962, due to the decreasing demand for pre-school courses, the

Kindergarten was phased out. For the same reason, the elementary level

was abolished in 1964. All human as well as material resources available

to the school became concentrated in the evolution and development of the

secondary level.

The year 1965 saw a new development in history of the school, after

serious considerations, it opened its portals to the girl students. Influxes

of girls immediately applied for admission and were consequently enrolled

during that school year. However, with the desire

of Fr. Raymund Bulosan Jr., the Director, to have a good foundation for

secondary education and due to the renewed demand of parents around

the area, the Kindergarten course had been re-opened in 1979-1980

followed by the opening of the Elementary Department (Grades 1 to 6 in

the S.Y 1980-1982). To this date, the school has maintained its co-

educational status providing Christian education to both boys and girls.

The St. John’s Cathedral School in Spanish; Escuela de la Cathedral

de San Juan; also referred to call as SJ is a Catholic private school

teaching run by the Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan in the Philippines.

It is the one of the oldest Catholic School in Dagupan, tracing its roots to

1957 when the school was founded. It remained a Catholic institution

through various generations, offering primary and secondary education.

Sampling

This study focused on the positive and negative effects of social

media among the students of St. John’s Cathedral School. We made use

of purposive sampling which involves choosing according to presented

criteria in relation with the particular research questions. It is useful in

these instances because it provides a wide range of non-probability

sampling techniques for us to draw on. Purposive sampling is a non-

probability sampling method and it occurs when “elements selected for the

sample are chosen by the judgment of the researcher. Researchers often

believe that they can obtain a representative sample by using a sound

judgment, which will result in saving time and money”. Purposive

sampling, also known as judgment, selective or subjective sampling, is a

sampling technique in which researcher relies on his or her own judgment

when choosing members of population to participate in the study. (Black,

K, 2010)

Data for the study were collected through means of interview with the

individuals having the following criteria:

1. The informant must be a student of Saint John’s Cathedral School

2. Male or female; and

3. Must have social media accounts

Originally, we had 9 informants but we were already able to get to a

saturation point and a conclusion on the first 7 informants. The interview

was conducted during the month April. Our informants were selected

through purposive sampling following the criteria stated above. They were

given social networking site names as pseudonyms, such as Facebook,

Twitter, Instagram, Tumbler, Flicker, CuriousCat and Snapchat.

Facebook is a resident of Caranglaan District, Dagupan City. She

has social media accounts such as Facebook, Messenger, Twitter and

Instagram. She is a Grade 12 Senior High School student at St. John’s

Cathedral School and she is 18 years old.

Twitter is 16 years of age and a resident of Tambac District,

Dagupan City. She is a Grade 10 Junior High School student at St. John’s

Cathedral School. She has Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Youtube

accounts.

Instagram is 18 years of age and is a Grade 12 Senior High School

student at St. John’s Cathedral School. She has social media accounts

such as Facebook, Youtube, Twitter and Instagram. She is a resident of

357 Paras Street, Bonuan Gueset, Dagupan City.

Cathedral School. She has Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube

accounts.

Snapchat is 17 years of age and is a Grade 11 Senior High School

student at St. John’s Cathedral School. He has social media accounts such

as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube. He is a resident of Careenan

Street, Dagupan City

Research Instrument

Instrumentation and Data Collection

Interview was the method used to gather required information from

the subjects. The interview used a semi-structured interview guide

questions. Gathering and exploring the different points of view and

19
Archdiocese of Lingayen – Dagupan Catholic Schools
ST. JOHN’S CATHEDRAL SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dagupan City, Philippines

observation of the informants was the aim of the semi-structured guide

questions, obtaining some important information that cannot be obtained

somewhere else.

An interview questionnaire, composing of open ended questions was

used for this type of interview regarding the impact of social media to the

informants’ behaviors. The questions were presented to the adviser and

other experts in order to be strengthened and confirmed. The improved

questions will be made before its final instruction.

The discomforts of participation, all of the questions coming from

the informants were answered; we explained their right to withdraw or to

avoid answering questions that did not fit them or made them

uncomfortable. We assured the informants that their identity will be kept

confidential. Only with their consent properly asked by signing consent

form prior to the interview by both parties. Conduction of the interview

took place in the available time of the informants and was done twice, first

was to initially gather information and second is for the validation of

remaining questions. Audiotape recordings were used to ensure the

credibility and authenticity of the information gathered.

Trustworthiness
Trustworthiness between the informants and the researchers in the

gathered data as well as analysis and interpretation, the elements of

20
Archdiocese of Lingayen – Dagupan Catholic Schools
ST. JOHN’S CATHEDRAL SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dagupan City, Philippines

trustworthiness namely dependability, credibility, transferability,

confirmability and authenticity were astutely deliberated by the

researchers.

Dependability was achieved by setting 3 contact times to our

informants. The first contact was done to establish trust and to provide

the feeling of security and ease during the interview and ensure that the

informants’ statements and the statements provided to them will follow

honesty. Second contact was the gathering of data process through open-

ended and comfortable questions that encouraged the informants to

answer fully and meaningfully using their own knowledge and emotions.

The third-time contact was the clarification of the informants’ statements

in case that they are not understandable or not clear. We only established

one contact with our informants because we have already gained sufficient

information to come up to an answer and we didn’t face any problems

during the contact time.

Credibility. We had engaged in one-on-one interviews with our

informants, while giving them enough time to reflect on their minds and

experiences and to build their own answers and giving them hints about

the question to be asked and rephrased the rights that is specified in the

inform consent we signed during the recruitment. We gave our own

insights, beliefs and opinions towards the effects of social media on

21

ST. JOHN’S CATHEDRAL SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dagupan City, Philippines

student behavior. We repeated presentations of the data that was collected

to emphasize the categories, subthemes and themes that rose on the data

analysis and interpretation.

Transferability. The phenomenon was showed by the participant

and will be described based on their experience and how such factors affect

their behavior as students. Through purposive sampling, we were able to

obtain informants by seeking recommendations from the help of the

researchers’ adviser and acquaintances which is the ideal means of

attaining transferability.

Authenticity. By presenting multiple realities and portraying the

different effects of social media, authenticity will be ensured. We will be

able to present multiple realities by observing their facial expressions and

other non-verbal hints shown by the informants in the midst of gathering

data.

Conformability. For the confirmability of the study, we will use our

knowledge gathered through our own experience as to how social media

can affect our behavior as students. Furthermore, the restraints we are

going to encounter will be encoded for the future researchers to be aware

and be able to avoid the same shortcomings. Figure 2 shows the diagram

that will reveal the subsequent research steps that will be taken from the

start until the end of this study.

Ethical Considerations

Ethical considerations were observed for the informants’ well-being.

Instead of using the informants’ real names, different brands of footwear

were used as their pseudonyms. Furthermore, the gathered data was

presented and confirmed by our research adviser and all of the members

of the panel. To ensure the autonomy of the informants, they signed an

agreement, the identity of the informants are to remain private.

Data Management and Analysis

The audiotaped facts gathered from the informants were

transcribed, compared from other informant’s responses and were shown

in narrative form. The gathered responses of the informants were

compared to distinguish resemblances and differences between their

rejoinders. The non-verbal responses of the informants were noted and

were associated to the transcribed statements of the informants during the

data analysis and interpretation.

The summary of findings was arranged according to themes,

subthemes and drew out key issues that were discussed by the

informants. The themes and subthemes of the study were taken from the

careful analysis of statements by the researchers. No software(s) or any

digital application was used. The themes and subthemes were subjective,

CHAPTER III

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

In this chapter the findings and results of the study are presented.

The researchers identified themes and subthemes and has correlated them

according to the answer of the informants regarding the teachers’

strategies in facing students’ diversity.

1. The Modern Trend to Connection

Social Media as one of the new ways for connection is really one of the

innovations of our advanced technology. It makes people feel connected to

other people afar them or even people near them. Social Media today serves

as strings to every people. It makes everything easy as 1,2,3. These

connections engage and grow communities via desktop, phone or any

electronic gadgets.

a. Affiliation with Family and Friends

We cannot deny that almost all of the millennials nowadays have

social media account. Though there are irresponsible users of social media

where they often forget the people around them. Still, there are more

millennials who are disciplined enough to balance and manage their time

properly for their family, relatives and friends who are near and afar them.

They assure that the connection and relationship with their family stays
26

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

the same before and after social networking sites had flourished. They even

find social media helpful to interconnect with their relatives and be aware

of their other relatives whom they do not usually talk to.

Facebook: Saakin hindi, kasi, yung social media lang naman,

parang ginagamit ko lang siya pag may kailangan akong sabihin or
importanteng sabihin. Mas gusto ko parin na personal kong
nakakausap yung tao. (No, because I only use social media when it
is urgent. I still prefer talking to people in person.)

Snapchat: Hindi naman kasi, sakin minamanage ko naman yung

time ko, sa time ko para sa study, time ko para sa social media, at
time ko sa family. (No, because I manage my time for studies, time
for social media and time for my family.)

Curious Cat: Oo, kasi small family lang naman kami, di kami
exposed sa malaking relatives, sa malaking family, yung sa social
media, nakikilala naman na, ay relative pala namin si ganito,
relative pala namin si ganyan. (Yes, we are just a small family, we
are not exposed in our bigger relatives, in the bigger family, in the
social media, we recognize that, they’re our relatives.)

Facebook stated during the interview that social media does not

affect his relationship with her family because she just uses it if she needs

to say something urgent and that she prefers talking to them personally.

Snapchat knows how to use his time properly so he has a time for studies,

family and for social media. For Curious Cat, social media helps her to

know more about their family members because of the help of social media.

According to Andrew Webb, Counsel within the Corporate

department in the Isle of Man, social media can enhance and advance good
27

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dagupan City, Philippines

family relationships. The opportunity to communicate to their families that

are a thousand miles apart in shared experiences is just one of the

examples of the positive effects of social media.

An article written by Teens participating in the Summer Wellness

Program stated that by making a few simple changes in the way we look

at the world and deal with other people, it is possible to create happier,

more stable relationships. Families need to be units of mutual caring and

support; they can be sources of lifelong strength for all individuals. It is

never too late to begin the process of improving family relationships, even

if they are already of good quality. By developing some simple skills.

Whereas in other situations you can step back and assess the relationship,

it is often hard to do this with your family. Your family may be a constant

presence in your life, so when an argument or issue arises, it may seem

impossible to handle. Remember that communication is key to resolving

conflict. While it may seem that your siblings are constantly present to

annoy you or boss you around, they are also there to communicate.

b. World of Social Media

The connections we have in the world today because of social media

made the youth of today expressive in their own different ways. They

become less controllable because they feel strong in their social media

worlds connected with their fellow youth. These connections in their

worlds gave them alliances which allows them to be communicative in

positive and negative ways.

CuriousCat: In my own perspective, lalo na sa mga teens ngayon,

they’ve become more bolder, mas free sila sa pag-express nila ng
opinions nila and ideas nila through social media. At some point
nakikita ko na mas nakaka-empower sa mga kabataan ngayon pero
syempre dapat alam din ng mga teens ngayon yung limitations nila
sa pageexpress ng feelings nila, opinions nila, ideas nila sa social
media. Yung world natin ngayon, is napakalaki ng plineplay na role
ng social media sa mundo. (In my own perspective, especially with
the teens nowadays, they’ve become more bolder, they’re more free
to express their opinions and ideas through social media. At some
point you will see that it can empower the youth but of course they
should know their limitations in expressing their feelings, opinions,
ideas in social media. Social media plays a very big role in our world
today.)

Instagram: Kasi, ngayon, yung world ngayon, masyado na silang

(Because,
right now, the world right now, they are too advanced, they’re too, as
if to say, smart. Sometimes they cannot go down to the fundamentals
of life, that they lack common sense sometimes, because they think
that everything in social media is everything in the world right now,
but the truth is that they lack something, they just think that they are
complete because of social media.)

Alejandra Guzman, a Senior Manager and Global Leadership Fellow,

tells that our growing love of social media is not just changing the way we

communicate. It’s changing the way we do business, the way we are

governed, and the way we live in society. And it’s doing so at breakneck

speed. So as what the two of our informants told. Youth of yesterday have

so many changes from the youth of today. They feel stronger than before

because social media empowers them. They feel much more superiority

than what the youth of yesterday felt because of social media.

In 2015, it is now easier to access the internet than ever before. We

have become so immune to being able to contact someone with just the

tap of a screen, that we can have an entire conversation with someone in

the same room as us without saying one word. This easily leads to the

misuse of the technology that we are provided with but not everybody

misusing it. Studies show that the age group of 12-21 access social media

more than any other. Being that I fall into this age group I know that social

media such as Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat are used to keep up with

the latest trends, our favorite artists and an easy way to stay up to date

with what our peers are doing. This is according to Nia Crawford, McKinley

Technology H.S and Loebig Ink Summer Intern.

The table below present the overview of the first them which is The

Modern Trend to Connection.

2. Outcomes of Social Media

As social media paved its way all throughout the world, different effects

of it started to be recognized one by one. We all know that social media

really became essential to everybody because of its helpful uses to all the

people who use it. However, social media being vital to everyone has pros

as well as cons.

a. Positive Edges of Social Media

One of the positive edges of social media is having an easy access for

everything and being able to communicate instantly to the people you love.

It also helps people to be updated on latest news as well as gathering

information from it. Being inclined to social media also gives student

beneficiaries for their study purposes because of the information being

comprehended.

Flicker: sa positibo, siguro dun kami nagkikita-kita or naguusap for

runtime, o kaya dun po kami natututo ng mga ibang pag-aaralan. (In
the positive effects, maybe we can meet or talk on runtime or we can
gather some new things about our studies.)

Snapchat: Gaya nga ng sabi ko kanina, yung positive side ng social

media, nakikita yung updates, mga latest news. (Just like what I've said
earlier, the positive side of social media, we can see latest updates.)

Tumblr: Yung positibo po nakakakuha po kami ng information sa mga

social networking sites po. (The positive one is that we get information
from social networking sites.)

Facebook: I think yung positive effect niya sa student behavior is

parang, nagiging updated yung student, kasi, parang nowadays parang
lahat tayo inclined sa social media, tapos lahat din tayo mas nagiging
inclined kasi ginagamit na siya for study purpose, parang pag may
updates ganon. (I think the positive effect to the student behavior is,
they're updated, because, nowadays it seems that we’re all inclined on
social media, then we’re all becoming more inclined because we use it
for study purpose, for updates.)

Twitter: Siguro po sa positive, in terms of studies, pwede kaming

makapagsearch ng mga kailangan naming isearch sa school, yung mga
kailangan naming gawin, para mas mapadali yung mga pinapagawa
samin ng mga teachers. (I guess in the positive, in terms of studies, we
can research what we need to search for in school, the things we need
to do, so that we can do our job easier.)

The informants clearly stated that one of the main positive effects of

social media is for them to be able to gather information and being updated

to the news. They also told that being into social media give them benefits

for them to be able to study easily.

The first and main advantage of the social media is connectivity.

People from anywhere can connect with anyone. Regardless of the location

and religion. The beauty of social media is that you can connect with

anyone to learn and share your thoughts. You can share your issues with

the community to get help and giddiness. Whether it is helping in term of

money or in term of advice, you can get it from the community you are

connected with. The main advantage of the social media is that you update

yourself from the latest happenings around in the world. Most of the time,

Television and print media these days are biased and does not convey the

true message. With the help of social media you can get the facts and true

information by doing some research. (Bilal Ahmad, writer at

techmaish.com)

According Charlie R. Claywell, a web designer, no matter if you are

searching for a former college roommate, your first grade teacher, or an

international friend, no easier or faster way to make a connection exists

than social media. Although Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest are

probably the most well-known social networking communities, new

websites are popping up regularly that let people connect and interact over

the Web. With each of these sites, individuals can make new friends, build

business connections or simply extend their personal base by connecting

and interacting with friends of friends, which can have a multiplying effect.

b. Pessimisms of Social Media

Though there are a lot of positive effects of social media, there are also

negative counterparts of it. Students nowadays frequently prioritize

33
Archdiocese of Lingayen – Dagupan Catholic Schools

checking updates on their social media accounts rather than doing their

school works or studying. They often forget time management which is

essential for being a student.

(The negative effect is that the
students can't focus on their studies they just keep on tweeting,
posting, sharing posts. It becomes their everyday hobby.)

Facebook: Ang negative effect nun kasi, parang di na alam ng bata kung
ano yung priority nya madalas. Madalas pag may exam nakikita mo
naka online, parang ginagawa nila na excuse na “kasi tumitingin ako
ng reviewers” ganun. (The negative effect is, it seems that the children
don’t know their priority. Like in every exam you often see them online,
but they're using it as an excuse like getting a reviewer etc.)

Twitter: Tapos yung negative naman kasi, kapag kunwari exams, mas
inaaalala namin yung mga social media instead of pagrereview. (The
negative is, when in exams, we think of our social networking rather than
reviewing.)

The informants assessed that habitual usage of social media makes

the student lessen their remorse when it comes to the time used for their

social media than their time for studies. This is a common case to every

student nowadays.

According to Maretha Swanepoel, a journalist, “One of the reasons why

students don’t perform optimally in today’s world, is their presence and

constant interaction on social media. Luckily, there are ways to limit your

child in this regard.” She explains that there are applications or apps

available to assist you in limiting your child’s social media activities.

“Research have shown that more than 50% of learners have said that

online distractions such as social media are the reason they are distracted

while studying. These studies were done in the United States, and

unfortunately, no reliable statistics are available for South African

learners.”

Empirical studies showed mixed results with regard to the impact of

social networks on academic performance. Studies have found that the

participation of students on social networks may have both positive and

negative impacts on their academic performance. Mehmood and Taswir,

2013 noted that “the use of social media networks and the Internet is one

of the most important factors that can influence educational performance

of students positively or adversely.”

Presented in the table below is the overview of the second theme.

3. Impact to Social Behavior

Social Media might affect how the student behave inside the

classroom and towards their studies. Usage of cellphone inside the

classroom in order to check updates on each account is inevitable. It will

always depend on the student how will he handle the usage of social media

inside the classroom and how will he cope up with his studies.

a. Demeanor inside the Room

Still, there are students who are responsible enough and able to

handle the correct usage of social media. These students use social

media inside the classroom but does not let their behaviors towards

their classmates and teachers be affected. They assure that proper and

respectful socialization of them to others is still managed.

parang walang pinagkaiba. (I think, for me, it doesn't affect my
behavior at school, because it's like, for me, I just check my social
media, I’m not socializing that much in my social media accounts, so
my behavior towards people in school seems to have no difference.)

Instagram: Para sa akin hindi naman kasi it depends na dun sa tao

kung paano nya iaano yung mga nakukuha niya sa social media,
kung paano nga niya itetake. (For me not really because it depends
on the person on how he/she receives the infos he/gets in social
media, how he/she takes it.)

Our two informants stated that Social Media usage inside the room

does not affect how they behave towards others. They told that it depends
36
Archdiocese of Lingayen – Dagupan Catholic Schools

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

on how someone will apply everything that he sees on social media. That

statement shows that their behavior towards others does not change with

or without Social Media usage.

b. Demeanor towards Studies

Even though the behavior of students inside the classroom towards

other people is not affected, it opposes their behavior towards their

studies and how do they get along with it. Almost all of our informants

told that Social Media affects the way they get along with their studies

because they are being tempted to check every update rather than

completely studying and just focus on their school works.

Facebook: Oo, medyo.
yung studies mo, ganun. (Yes, somehow. There are nights that I have
to make a requirement or review but I'm too lazy, because it seems
like when I open the app, I won’t stop, just keep on scrolling even if
it’s become boring, it makes me lazy in doing my requirements.)

Twitter: kapag kunwari exams, mas inaaalala namin yung mga

social media instead of pagrereview. (During examinations, we think
of our social networking rather than reviewing.)

Instagram: Oo, kasi wala akong time management, kaya, mostly dun
ko inaano yung time ko, di na ako nakakapagaral ng maayos. (Yes,
because I do not have time management, so, mostly I spend my time
there, I don’t study well anymore.)

CuriousCat: Oo, kasi at some point, di na nawawala sa sistema ko

yung paggamit sa social media. I still have to study, pero parang
binibigyan ko ng leisure yung sarili ko na gumamit ng social media
and at the same time hatiin ko sarili ko para mag-study. (Yes
because at some point, using social media cannot be removed from

my system. I still have to study, but I give myself some leisure to use
social media and at the same time divide myself to study.)

Here, four of our informants stated that their demeanor towards

their study is affected in a way where instead of just focusing on their

studies, their attentions is being pulled by their Social Media account

where they find leisure most of the time. They happen to lack proper time

management on getting along with their studies.

Just like what Maretha Swanepoel, a journalist, “One of the reasons

why students don’t perform optimally in today’s world, is their presence

and constant interaction on social media. Luckily, there are ways to limit

your child in this regard.” She explains that there are applications or apps

available to assist you in limiting your child’s social media activities.

“Research have shown that more than 50% of learners have said that

online distractions such as social media are the reason they are distracted

while studying. These studies were done in the United States, and

unfortunately, no reliable statistics are available for South African

learners.” Students often disregard studying because checking of the

updates on their social media accounts comes first in their minds.

LIMITATIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

This study adopted the semi-structured qualitative research

interview as an appropriate means to obtain the data and the descriptive

phenomenology as our research design. We established three contact

times with the informants: The first one is to ensure trust and rapport

between us and the informants, the second contact time is the actual

interview and a third contact time that is used for clarifications with some

unclear statements by the informants. We only had one contact time with

the informants because we were able to get all the needed information from

them and that we didn’t face any problems in interviewing them.

Having informants within the minimal number of suggested

members of the study, may implicate feebler findings in accordance to

their statements and sentiments.

However, to deal with this problem, we dug in further into their

responses and formed stable results by painstakingly analyzing them until

concrete themes and subthemes were formulated.

CHAPTER IV

REVIEW OF LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents related literature and studies on the

effects of social media on student behavior socially, scholastically, and

personally. The Literature presented here helps the researcher to have a

deep insight, clear perspective and a better understanding of the chosen

problem and various factors connected with the study.

Foreign

The impact of social media on families has been researched to see

what negative and positive effects are happening. Psychologists are

increasingly concerned that technology is breaking down family

communication. It can rob families of attention, communication, and a

feeling of safety within the family unit. A book by Sherry Turkle, Alone

Together, talks about a study conducted where parents and children were

asked their opinion about technology. AddictionHope stated that:

“According to a study on media influence, conducted by the Kaiser Family

Foundation, found that kids ages 8-18 years old spent over 7 hours a day

using electronic media. That equals up to 50 hours per week in front of a

screen. Numerous research studies show that when children are on their

screens they are losing our on interpersonal relationship skills. Many

42

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

children reported that they felt their parents were addicted to their phone

or computer. Children stated a desire for their parents to spend quality

time and interact with them. This study shows the need for family social

interaction and the lines are blurred on when is enough with social media

use. Alternatively, technology can be used to keep families connected. It

can help members keep track of schedules, location, and a sense of

security between members that parents and/or children can be reached

immediately if needed. Technology is also helpful for families of divorce or

separation through more immediate voice or face contact. In a 2008 study

published by Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project,

reported that cell phones, email, and texting helped families compensate

for the increased stress of modern life by allowing them to communicate

with family members when apart.”

According to Liveabout, Social networking has changed the way we

keep in touch and communicate with our friends, but not all of it is

positive. When it comes to social media and friendships, we can get burned

out from hearing about how others feel and what they do. Time on social

media means that we can also fail to get the face-to-face time that can be

vital to keep a friendship strong. As much as we adore our friends, hearing

frequently about the details of their life (like what they ate, when they are

having a bad day, or how wonderful their spouse is), may just give you
43

information overload. “We care about the goings on in our friends' lives,

but too many updates can add an overwhelming element to our already

packed days. Besides that, sometimes hearing repeatedly about how good

or rotten your friend's life is can turn you off the idea of hanging out with

them more frequently. Too much and too frequent communication takes

away that "getting caught up" feeling when you see a friend in person. One

of the great things about friendship is seeing the world from a friend's

viewpoint. It offers a wonderful chance for conversation and expanding

your knowledge and opinions of the world. Differing opinions are good in

a friendship, but only if the two of you are able to discuss things in a

reasonable manner. If your friend is constantly posting links about a hot-

button subject for you, you'll find yourself having an online argument or

you'll begin avoiding them all together. Either way, it doesn't help your

friendship.”

Maryanne Gaitho said: “Information and communication technology

has changed rapidly over the past 20 years with a key development being

the emergence of social media. The pace of change is accelerating. For

example, the development of mobile technology has played an important

role in shaping the impact of social media. Across the globe, mobile devices

dominate in terms of total minutes spent online. This puts the means to

connect anywhere, at any time on any device in everyone’s hands.”

According to simplilearn, a fascinating study by New York Times

Consumer Insight Group revealed the motivations that participants cited

for sharing information on social media. There are several ways the impact

of social media is felt by individuals and social groups Almost a quarter of

the world’s population is now on Facebook. In the USA nearly 80% of all

internet users are on this platform. Because social networks feed off

interactions among people, they become more powerful as they grow.

Thanks to the internet, each person with marginal views can see that he’s

not alone. Increased visibility of issues has shifted the balance of power

from the hands of a few to the masses. This is a very human reaction when

people are given options that absolve them from responsibility to act. A

2013 study by the University of British Columbia’s Sauder School of

Business found that when people are presented with the option of ‘liking’

a social cause, they use this to opt out of actually committing time and

money to a charitable cause. On the other hand, when people are allowed

to show support in private, they are more likely to show meaningful

support in terms of making a financial contribution. The researchers found

that a public endorsement is an action meant to satisfy others’ opinions,

whereas people who give in private do so because the cause is aligned to

their values.

According to LCIBS (London College of International Business

Studies), Social media has gained credibility over the years as a trusted

source of information and platform where organizations can interact with

audiences. We are seeing education institutions adapting these

developments into their systems and relying on group resources and

mechanisms to improve the student life. The use of social media in

education provides students with the ability to get more useful

information, to connect with learning groups and other educational

systems that make education convenient. Social network tools afford

students and institutions with multiple opportunities to improve learning

methods. Through these networks, you can incorporate social media

plugins that enable sharing and interaction. Students can benefit from

online tutorials and resources that are shared through social networks

and. There is valuable knowledge to be gained through social media such

as analytics and insights on various topics or issues for study purposes.

Social media is also a medium where students can establish beneficial

connections for their careers. As an educational institution, it is crucial to

be active in many social platforms possible, this helps create better

student training strategies and shapes student culture. Social media offers

audience and subject monitoring tools that are useful and it is one of the

best platforms to extract data. You can find out how the majority people

feel about a particular topic or how experts perceive and advice on specific
46

issues. This can help students compile and produce useful content for

research. Whether students are working on an assignment, working on a

project or trying to gain more insight on a subject, some of the best

information and results can be extracted from social media.

According to a study conducted by Trisha Dowerah Baruah, social

media offers a variety of avenues through which we can communicate with

people. In fact, social media is known to have been used widely in

educational field also. Over the last 30 years the nature of communication

has undergone a substantial change and it is still changing. Email has

had a profound effect on the way people keep in touch. Communications

are shorter and more frequent than when letters were the norm and

response time has greatly diminished. Instant messaging has created

another method of interaction, one where the length of messages is shorter

and the style of the interaction is more conversational. Broadcast

technologies like Twitter transform these short bursts of communication

from one-on-one conversations to little news (or trivia) programs Online

communication tools also have the potential to increase our awareness of

the movements of our professional or social contacts. Social proprioception

tells us where the nodes of our community are and provides a sense of

connectedness to and awareness of others without direct communication.

Internet is the third place where people connect with friends, build a sense
47

of togetherness. Increasingly, a computer with an Internet connection is

the locus of a range of interactions in a variety of media and a gateway to

an array of social spaces for work and play. Social networking sites like

Facebook and MySpace and virtual environments like Second Life and

World of Warcraft have become online meeting spaces where users—

members, residents, or players—can interact and express themselves.

They offer a way to keep in touch with existing communities that users

belong to offline, such as social and professional groups. They also make

it possible for people who would not normally communicate more than a

few times a year to keep in touch— colleagues met at conferences, for

instance, or friends met through the online community itself. Sites like

YouTube and Flickr represent another forum for online communication

that is centered on sharing, preference, and popular culture. Visitors can

browse movies (in the case of YouTube) or photos (in the case of Flickr),

express personal preferences, add commentary, and upload their own

creative work. The kinds of interaction that occur on these sites center

around shared interests and include not only verbal commentary, but

commentary in the form of original or derivative works based on popular

pieces. One of the reasons people prefer such form of media is because of

the interactions they can have there, both social and professional. Whether

it is as simple as checking back to see what other comments have been

added to yours or as involved as attending a workshop or presentation in

48

a virtual world, the nature of the attraction lies in the connections between

people that these online spaces afford.

The age of social media has taught users the art of multitasking,

something our generation has started to pick up on very frequently.

Opening that Facebook icon and seeing the list of comments on the photo

you posted the night prior fills you with a sudden shock of euphoria--the

delights of being known and seen amongst your whole network of friends,

or acquaintances. For some, this is the consequence of a social networking

era, and it can, in many cases, replace the main modes of personal

communication. But not to worry. At least now you can still catch up with

your group's daily exploits while balancing your office or school work, or

while you're still with other friends who value your physical presence. We

can become so drowned in the sea of networking, we may forget about our

present environment or the tasks at hand. In a study done at Stanford

University, researchers suggested that frequent media multi-taskers were

prone to many distractions and experience a difference in their style of

information-processing, as opposed to those who don't frequently multi-

task with social media. According to the results, the latter were able

allocate their attention more effectively despite many distractions. This

evidence shows how much frequent social media use can alter our modes

of thinking and attention span. It's no wonder we see students popping

Adderall in the library to get through a night's worth of studying. They may

not be frequent users of social media, but nonetheless, they are still

involved in a community of people whose habits shift to this mindset,

which affects the people around them. (Yoram Ebrahimi, 2015)

The effects social media has on a student could be instrumental or

detrimental to their education as well as future employment depending on

how the user utilizes the social media sites. Social networking can help

students interact if they are working in a group on a project. This makes

it more convenient for students who may commute and are unable to meet

at particular group meetings. Approximately two-thirds of teachers,

however, believe that social media is more of a distraction towards their

education than a convenience. A study showed that students who do not

use social media sites end up with a higher grade point average and higher

test scores than a social media user. This is due to the time spent on social

media sites like Facebook and the distractions that may occur while a

student should be studying or doing homework. (Cody Scott, 2015)

Nowadays, even children and young people own a cellular phone or

gadgets that make communication and access to a wide range of

other countries, the so-called Social-media explosion. (Melanie Reyes,

2016)

According to Philstar, one in four of the parents surveyed say that

their kids now prefer to go online rather than talk to them, with one in

three parents believing the internet isolates them from their children. All

in all, a fifth of parents and children say that the internet can cause family

tension. "It is only natural that using—and misusing—each other’s

connected devices can become a cause of conflict for families. However, as

we spend more and more time online, family dynamics are also changing.

It is important that families maintain an ongoing dialogue about how to

spot and respond to potential dangers, with parents and children together

agreeing on the basic rules on how they can best navigate the digital

world,” said Andrei Mochola, head of consumer business at Kaspersky

Lab. Janice Richardson, senior advisor at European Schoolnet, said that

although the internet becomes a source of conflict in some families,

siblings and extended family members take on a much bigger role in

children's online activities. "Children are instinctively turning to the

person they perceive to be able to fix technical issues, advise on sites and

security tools and provide more objective responses to delicate queries,”

Richardson said, citing a recent study by the Joint Research Center of the

European Commission. She said that given the emerging trend, the

importance of parents and guardians developing their own technical

competence and building trusting relationship with their kids grow. "At

the same time, software and social media providers, too, should seek to

develop more ‘family-friendly’ tools,” Richardson added. (Alixandra Caole

Vila, 2016)

According to Wikipedia, social networking is one of the most active

web-based activities in the Philippines, with Filipinos being declared as

the most active users on a number of web-based social network sites such

as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter. The use of social

networking website has become so extensive in the Philippines that the

country has been tagged as "The Social Networking Capital of the World,"

and has also become part of Filipino cyberculture. Social networking is

also used in the Philippines as a form of election campaign material, as

well as tools to aid criminal investigation. The popularity of social

networking in the Philippines can be traced in the Filipinos' culture of

"friends helping friends." For Filipinos, their friends and who they know

can become more valuable than money, especially when what they need

can be achieved through nepotism, favoritism, and friendship among

others.

In a global study called Wave7, Filipinos are using social media to

primarily connect with their families living overseas. As of this writing,

there are more than 11 million Filipinos living outside the Philippines.

Social media has become a way for them to communicate with their

families and friends instead of using overseas call and text, which are the

traditional ways of communication. In the past, local telcos usually have

ongoing overseas call and text promotions which are actually quite

expensive. The telco usually charged around 50 cents (which is roughly 25

pesos) per minute when calling someone abroad. You would not call

someone abroad to talk for just under a minute, right? As Internet

penetration increases in the Philippines, it seems that Filipinos have

grown fond of using apps such as WeChat, Line, Skype, and Facebook

Messenger. Line has a Free Call services. I use Skype to call my friends

abroad. With social media, the barrier to communications between families

separated by countries have diminished, and only the country’s total social

activity has increased. (Vince, 2014)

"Children who spend much of their time online find it harder to focus

in class and have short attention span " researchers found through the

samples that 7 out of 10 teachers believed that their students are

becoming obsessed with social media sites such as Facebook. Their

students tend to study while using Facebook and it shows that they got

20% lower grades. Facebook-using students even perform task (projects

or assignments) without completion for the reason that they spend more

time scrolling down on their newsfeed to see updates about their friends

and look up for their notifications rather than finishing their school tasks.

Aside that Facebook affects students’ academic performance; it also has

an effect on students’ emotional health. Yes, students feel connected to

others but study shows that they manifest depression through seeing their

status updates. Some would utilize the site to express what they feel

towards their enemy in school or even outside the campus. They would

blurt out through posting status that would target their opponent just to

hurt their feelings. With the rampant use of all the social networking sites,

students are coming loose to the real associates. Facebook chats and posts

would make them busy nowadays. They12 may be connected to many

people but they somehow disconnect with the important aspects of their

lives and one of those is education. The belief of meeting people face to

face seems very odd. Students prefer to send and receive instant messages

or post messages through Facebook.” (Ronalou P. Paculan, 2013)

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Brief synopsis about the study’s finding, conclusions, and

recommendations are presented in this chapter to give a detailed

summation about the results of the study, and on imperative propositions

that may have arose during the course of the research process.

SUMMARY

The study entitled “Angels and Demons: Impact of Social Media on

Student Behavior” was conducted in order to find out what are the positive

and as well as the negative impact of social media on the demeanor of our

fellow students inside their classroom and how do they cope up with their

studies today as social media starts flourishing in our generation.

The study is qualitative in nature, and it has utilized descriptive

phenomenology as its research design. The informants in this study were

students of St. John’s Cathedral School. There were seven informants for

this study. They are chosen through purposive sampling in the form of

extreme case sampling based on criteria in which the informants must be

either male or female, should have social media accounts and must be a

student of St. John’s Cathedral School. In order to reach the saturation

point, all informants were asked with the same questions and has the

same order and the data attained were used in the formation of themes

and their subthemes. We had established three contact times with the

informants, the second contact was the actual interview and the third

contacts time was for the clarifications of the unclear statements uttered

by the informants. Data was gathered in the form of a semi-structured

interview by utilizing standardized open-minded questions.

During the entire process of the study, we found out some

perceptions on the positive and negative impact of social media among the

students. Through the interview that was conducted. We became aware

that most of the students are using their phones to check updates on their

social media accounts while they are having classes. Some of them use it

when their teachers tell them to do and if they have pocket data. They even

told that it is inevitable for students nowadays.

According to the informants, social media has positive and negative

effects. These includes the instant communication for their loved ones. It

is important for them to become updated of the things that are happening

to their relatives and friends near or afar them. Social media as

communication gives close ties and tighter bonds between their families

because according to the informants that were interviewed, they know how

to balance their time for their family members who are near them and for

those who are thousand miles apart from them. Social media is also

essential for them because it gives information and serves as sources of

knowledge to them. The different posts and facts seen helps them to keep
60
Archdiocese of Lingayen – Dagupan Catholic Schools

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dagupan City, Philippines

their eyes opened for new learnings. But they still assure that the sources

are reliable and it depends how a certain person accepts everything the he

sees on social media. We also asked what the negative effects of social

media to them are. We have found out that having lack of remorse for

using social media instead of them studying is one of its effects. Instead of

just focusing on their studies, they prefer checking updates on their

accounts first. Hence, they tend to forget what must be prioritized first.

They find leisure by checking their social media accounts that is why

instead of just studying continuously they are being distracted by these

social networking sites that they keep on checking, thus, losing their

focus. Also, social media as we all know is the main source of cyberbullying

which is a negative thing.

To conclude, social media has really paved its way throughout the

world and has targeted the wants of everyone, specifically the students. It

has many positive effects and advantages but it also has many negative

effects and disadvantages among the students toward their behavior in

getting along with their studies. Almost all of the students around the

globe have their own social media accounts and they cannot avoid using

phones while on classes to check it.

The following table presents a brief indication of the key themes and

findings from the study:

Table 2. Overview of the Key Themes and Findings of the Study

Conclusions
 Students that have social media accounts often use it to

connect with other people. It became one of the advanced

means of connection to everyone around the world. In

conclusion, these connections have also something to do with

their relationship with their family. It became helpful to them

in a way that it serves as a bridge for every families who are

far from each other. Although there are teens who tend to

forget socializing with their families that are near them, a lot

of teens are still disciplined enough to be communicative with

all the people they love and know how to balance their time.

The millennials are now also living in a social media world.

Therefore, the connections of their worlds made them bolder

and expressive with their thoughts and ideas that somehow

has positive and negative effects.

 The positive effects of social media include fast

communication and connections to the people they love. It

also includes being updated with the latest news that happens

everyday as well as being a source of many information. These

positive effects have negative counterparts which include not

being able to prioritize the most important things first. Rather

than just studying, students mostly prefer looking at their

phones or other devices just to check updates to which they

tend to forget more important things. To add up to our

conclusion, social media affects behavior of student on how

they get along with their studies but not on how they socialize

with people they are together with inside their classroom.

 These conclusions have pleasingly answered our statement of

the problems which included the following: First, how does

social media affect students behaviorally? Second, how does

social media affect the connections of students to everyone?

Lastly, how do the students cope with effects of social media?

Recommendations

1. Students should learn the difference between reality and idealism.

Because the reality that they see in social media might be fake news

or false hopes and persuasions made up by people. These things are

already amassed on the internet and students should be aware

2. Students should avoid multitasking between social networking

updates and studies unless it is necessary. It removes their ability

to focus on important things and multitasking will only make them

lazy in doing their studies and thus will lead them to stop doing it

instead.

3. Students should manage their time properly between using the

internet and social media, having time for their family and friends,

and most importantly having time to study or do their assignments

and requirements.

4. Students should also use the power of social media and the internet

for academic purposes as well, not just social network updates and

socializing. The social media can be a big help in gathering

information and data on things that would help in the studies or

add to the knowledge of the student.

5. Teachers should also use social media as a tool to educate students

efficiently. Given that today’s youth is inclined to surfing the internet

and checking their social networking sites. Teachers should see this

as an advantage to help students learn more about the lessons,

digitally.
