About
AMEB Victoria Welcome
AMEB Victoria was proud to release our updated online service centre AMEB Connect
in July 2017. Through AMEB Connect registered users can enrol candidates for
examinations and evaluations, download exam notices and exam reports, view results,
and purchase AMEB syllabuses and publications. From January 2018 you will also be
able to enrol for Online Written examinations through AMEB Connect. Once registered
for AMEB Connect, you can simply log in via the link on the AMEB Victoria website.
Registration is easy and we would be pleased to help.
This Handbook is intended to provide the information needed to enrol candidates for
AMEB and Rockschool exams in Victoria; and in later pages you will find a step-by-step
guide to enrolling through AMEB Connect. Details of examination requirements can be
found in the 2018 Manual of Syllabuses, available to purchase in hard copy or as individual
syllabuses in PDF format via AMEB Connect.
It is important to note that only material in current syllabuses can be presented for
examination. Within each syllabus you will find general regulations, requirements,
objectives and prescribed pieces for each grade. If, once you have read the syllabus, you
have any questions please contact us to clarify any aspects that may not be clear.
I am delighted to announce some exciting new developments at AMEB this year, including:
• New Piano for Leisure Series 4 Grade Books, Recordings and Handbooks
• A new Oboe syllabus and Series 1 publications
• Revised Tuba syllabus
• A new Online Written Exam Centre from mid-January
For more information on these developments, please go to the AMEB Victoria News
section of this handbook or the News section of AMEB Victoria’s website.
We encourage you to consider enrolling candidates for practical exams in Term 2 or 3.
These sessions are less busy so we are better able to accommodate scheduling requests,
with the added benefit that candidates will be able to avoid exams clashing with end-of-
year activities in Term 4.
Please note that some subjects are only offered in ‘Special Subject’ sessions in July and
November. These are: Accordion, CPM, Ensemble, Harp, Organ, Percussion, Recorder
– and Rockschool. However, it might be possible for exams in these instruments to
be scheduled outside published session dates, if there is sufficient examining time in
a particular location. Please contact us if you would like to find out more about this
possibility.
We endeavour to accommodate requests to avoid dates of school camps, VCE exams, or
other important events, and to make special provisions for candidates with special needs;
however, it is essential that dates to avoid and requests for special provisions are advised
at the time of enrolment and cannot be considered after the Closing Date for enrolments
for the particular Examination Session has passed. Please appreciate that once exams
have been programmed it is very difficult and time-consuming to re-arrange examiners’
timetables.
During 2018 the Australian Music Examinations Board will celebrate 100 years
of service to the Australian community and we will continue promoting and recognising
achievement in music and speech for many years to come. We wish you every success
with your teaching or studies this year and we look forward to supporting your work
in 2018.

About AMEB Victoria
The Australian Music Examinations Board
Australia’s leading music assessment service, the Australian Music Examinations
Board (AMEB) offers syllabuses and graded examinations for a wide range of musical
instruments, music theory, singing and speech, from beginner through to higher grades
and on to diploma level.

Promoting and recognising musical achievement

The Australian Music Examinations Board was established as a national organisation in
1918 and will celebrate 100 years of service to Australian students and teachers on 15
May 2018. Regarded as the benchmark for assessment in music, speech and drama in
Australia, AMEB exams provide nationally recognised levels of achievement in practical
and theoretical subjects. AMEB syllabuses provide the framework for studies leading to
secondary school certificates, university entrance and the establishment of careers in
performing and music teaching.

Maintaining benchmark standards

To maintain benchmark standards, AMEB is committed to continuous review of its
syllabuses and publications to ensure they are up to date with evolving educational
principles and practices, and teachers are invited to contribute to the review process.
The high standards set by AMEB are in turn upheld by a panel of examiners who are
specialists in their field.

AMEB Victoria
AMEB Victoria conducts graded music and speech exams in Melbourne and country
Victoria. A not-for-profit organisation wholly owned by the University of Melbourne and
governed by a Board of Directors, AMEB Victoria is one of six state offices within the
federated AMEB structure. The AMEB Federal Office is responsible for developing and
publishing syllabuses and related publications, while AMEB Victoria is responsible for all
exams conducted in Victoria.

Supporting Victorian teachers and students

A number of workshops and seminars are organised by AMEB Victoria each year to
provide teaching tips and information about specific syllabuses and services.

AMEB Victoria structure

The AMEB Victoria Board of Directors, appointed by the University of Melbourne, receives
advice from an Examinations Advisory Committee, which includes members with
expertise in education, training and assessment. Each Victorian examiner is a member of
their respective subject’s Specialist Examining Panel, which meets regularly to discuss
examining matters and engage in professional development activities. Day-to-day
operations are the responsibility of the General Manager.

Online Written Exam Centre

AMEB will launch a new Online Written Examination Centre on 15 January 2018. The
new platform will utilise an updated notation system fully optimised for mobile devices
and will be HTML5 compatible. For the convenience of Victorian teachers and students,
enrolments for Online Written examinations will be made via AMEB Connect (Victoria).
(This will be the only method of enrolment for students and teachers resident in Victoria.)

Performance Evaluation Program

The Performance Evaluation Program provides the opportunity for students to receive
an independent assessment customised to their specific needs. In its simplest form, the
Performance Evaluation enables a candidate to have repertoire evaluated by an AMEB
Examiner and to receive a constructive written report. Alternatively, teachers may
request a customised assessment including additional components, such as technical
work or orchestral/band excerpts, for evaluation. Numerical marks or letter gradings
could be given to suit a particular school’s requirements. The program of work for
evaluation, the objectives and marking schema (if any) would be provided to the assessor
at the beginning of each Evaluation.

Recital examinations trial

In 2018, AMEB will continue to trial Recital examinations in Drama and Communication,
Flute, Trumpet and Violin. Continuation of the Recital exams trial will allow a full year of
data to be collected and reviewed before a decision is made as to the future of this style
of exam. The Recital examination comprises repertoire only and features material from
the AMEB syllabuses along with an own choice option. The Recital exam is offered as an
alternative to the “comprehensive” AMEB Practical examination and does not replace it.
Recital exam syllabuses are available in digital (PDF) format (at no charge) and may be
obtained by contacting AMEB Victoria.

Rockschool
AMEB will continue to deliver Rockschool exams in 2018. Rockschool exams are globally-
recognised qualifications in Guitar, Bass, Drums, Vocals, Piano, band-based keyboards

popular genres in a range of rock, pop, metal and funk styles. For further information go
to www.rockschool.ameb.edu.au.
Music Production: Rockschool Music Production exams will be offered in 2018. On

it be audio production, electronic music production, mixing, editing, mastering or sound

General Exam
Information AMusA Practical examinations
Teachers and private entrants are advised to carefully read the objectives for the
Associate examinations listed in the current AMEB Syllabuses before entering for the
examination. The Associate Diploma is highly respected in the international music
community and recognises a sophistication of musical understanding and performance
abilities that are well above the requirements for Grade 8. The success rate for AMusA
is much lower than for Grade examinations. To avoid disappointment, it is therefore
suggested that teachers with limited experience in presenting candidates at Diploma
level obtain advice from an experienced teacher before entering candidates for AMusA.

General Exam Information

AMusA and LMusA exam rehearsals
Associate and Licentiate Practical examinations are held only in Studio 1 at the AMEB
Studios in Hawthorn, which is equipped with a Steinway Model B grand piano. Candidates
wishing to rehearse in the studio may do so when it is not being used for exams.
Availability is limited so candidates are advised to book rehearsal times well in advance.
Hire fees are payable and the Studio can be reserved by calling the AMEB Victoria office.

Photo ID
Associate and Licentiate candidates are required to present photo identification to the
Supervisor, together with the completed Notice of Examination, on arrival.

Candidate confidentiality
AMEB respects the confidentiality of candidates and therefore communication about
examinations is normally with the enrolling person. However, in an emergency, timetable
information will be provided to parents or candidates if they can accurately identify the
candidate by providing all of the following details: teacher’s name and address; candidate
name and date of birth; and the subject and grade for which the candidate is enrolled.
In addition, AMEB Victoria can only respond to appeals or complaints made by the person
who enrolled the candidate or the candidate, if over the age of 18. Where the candidate is
under the age of 18, the candidate’s parent or guardian may communicate with us on their
behalf.

Certificates – completion of additional requirements

A candidate who has previously completed a Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8, Certificate of
Performance, Associate Diploma or Licentiate Diploma Practical examination should
notify AMEB Victoria upon completion of the Additional Requirement. Certificates for
Grade examinations will then be released. Diploma certificates will be awarded at the
next Conferring of Diplomas Ceremony.

Conferring of Diplomas
Successful Associate and Licentiate candidates, who have provided AMEB with evidence
of their completion of any Additional Requirements, will be invited to attend the annual
Conferring of Diplomas Ceremony. The Ceremony, at which diplomas will be formally
conferred upon candidates who successfully completed all requirements in 2017, will be
held on Tuesday 20 March 2018, commencing at 6pm, subject to the availability of The
Wilson Hall, University of Melbourne, Parkville. A successful candidate who is not able to
be present to receive his/her award in person will be admitted ‘in absentia’ to the diploma
and the certificate will be mailed following the ceremony.

Downloaded musical scores
Candidates who present for examination using scores obtained through free download
from websites should note that they bear responsibility to ensure copyright clearance for
their use of the material has been obtained. Candidates should note that heavy penalties
apply for the improper use of copyright material.

Electronic exam reporting

Progressively, AMEB Victoria will move towards electronic reporting of grade
examinations. An Examiner may use a notebook or tablet computer in the examination
room to type reports, and it is possible that keystroke sounds might be audible at times.

General Exam Information

Page turning
A page-turner may be used by candidates and/or accompanists. Accompanists and page-
turners may only remain in the examination room when actually required.

Photocopies
In general, the Copyright Act prohibits the use of photocopied music. Photocopies should
not be used by candidates in AMEB examinations, unless an exception to copyright
applies, or the relevant music publisher has granted permission for the candidate to
make a copy.
In some circumstances, a copy of music may be required for use by the examiner. In
these cases, if performing from memory, candidates should provide a published edition
of the music to the examiner. Diploma candidates must supply a copy of their music to the
examiner.
If you are unsure of the provisions of the Copyright Act, please refer to the "Guide to Music
Copyright for Australian Educators" on the APRA/AMCOS website or contact APRA/
AMCOS on 1300 852 388 or apra@apra.com.au.

Teachers and accompanists

As it is the examining authority, it is not appropriate for AMEB Victoria to recommend
teachers or accompanists for AMEB examinations. The Melbourne Conservatorium of
Music has a list of accompanists which can be found at: www.vca-mcm.unimelb.edu.au/
accompanists. In addition, the Victorian Music Teachers’ Association (VMTA) has a list
of music teachers and accompanists. For further information, visit the VMTA website:
www.vmta.org.au.

Trainee examiners
AMEB has a comprehensive and rigorous program for examiner training and professional
development. A Trainee Examiner may be present during an examination and may
conduct all or part of an examination. However, the Supervising Examiner will be
responsible for the examination and will provide the official assessment and written
report.

Warm-up
For candidates presenting for examinations at the AMEB Studios in Hawthorn, warm-
up facilities will be offered for a period of approximately 10 minutes to candidates in
Piano Grade 8, Certificate of Performance, Associate and Licentiate; all Voice and all
Instrumental subjects. Candidates may be accompanied to the warm-up room by their
accompanist and teacher. Warm-up facilities are provided for the purpose of warming-
up and tuning instruments; candidates and accompanists should not expect to have
sufficient time to rehearse repertoire. Note also that the availability of warm-up facilities
at other examination venues cannot be guaranteed and should not necessarily be
expected.

Performance Evaluation Program
The Performance Evaluation Program provides the opportunity for students to
receive an independent assessment customised to their specific needs.
In its simplest form, the Performance Evaluation enables a candidate to have
their prepared repertoire evaluated by an AMEB assessor and to receive a
constructive written report. Alternatively, teachers may create a customised
assessment by including additional components for evaluation, such as technical
work or orchestral/band excerpts. The program of work for evaluation and the
objectives would be provided to the assessor at the beginning of each Evaluation.

Practical Exams
Each candidate will receive a personal written report on the work presented.
While it is envisaged that the performance would not normally be graded, it would
be possible for the assessor to give a numerical mark or letter grade to suit a
teacher or school’s requirements.
Teachers may enrol candidates for repertoire-only evaluation through AMEB
Connect by using the subject codes listed overleaf. (Please request a subject
number if one is not listed.) Schools and teachers who wish to arrange a tailor-
made evaluation are invited to contact Jeremy Fletcher, Client Relations Manager
by emailing ameb-vic@unimelb.edu.au or calling 03 9035 8888.

Teacher Consultations
A teacher may request a 30 minute personal consultation with an AMEB
Examiner, which would be timetabled at the end of a day’s examining.
The examiner will provide general tips and suggestions relating to the
preparation of candidates for AMEB examinations. Although these suggestions
might be based upon the examiner’s observations of recent examination
performances by a teacher’s students, it would not be appropriate to discuss
examination results or specific examination reports. Consultations with
examiners will be available during most practical examination sessions this year
(except Licentiate Sessions), subject to programming constraints. Registration
for a Teacher Consultation can be made via AMEB Connect using the subject codes
listed overleaf. Teacher Consultations may be arranged for instruments which are
not listed, on application.

Aural examination regulations

Due to the nature of aural examinations, it is essential that candidates present for
examination at the scheduled time. Candidates will not be permitted to enter the
examination room once the exam has commenced, due to the disturbance this creates
and the inconvenience to other candidates.
At the commencement of Aural examinations, candidates will be given a short listening
time, in order to become familiar with the sounds used on the recording. Before the
end of the examination, at the conclusion of the recording, candidates will be given ten
minutes’ checking time during which writing is permitted.

Relocation of Written examinations

A candidate’s written examination may be re-located from one centre to another, provided
that the application is accompanied by a re-scheduling fee of $40.00 and it is received
at least fourteen days prior to the date of examination. Approval will be subject to the
availability of seating at the requested centre. Similarly, a request to change a candidate’s
grade will not be accepted unless it is received at least fourteen days prior to the
examination, together with a re-scheduling fee of $40.00.
