AMEB Centenary
The Australian Music Examinations Board was established as a national organisation on
15 May 1918 and will celebrate one hundred years of service to education in 2018. We hope
that teachers, students and examiners past and present will participate in our special
Centenary events to be held during the year.
AMEB Connect
AMEB Victoria’s online service centre, AMEB Connect became fully operational in July
2017. AMEB Connect allows registered users to:
• Enrol candidates for examinations and evaluations
• View and print Notices of Examination and email them to candidates
• View and print Practical examination reports and email them to candidates
• Purchase AMEB syllabuses and publications
New users may register for AMEB Connect at any time by following the link on the AMEB
Victoria website. Enrolling for exams through AMEB Connect is quick and easy. Details for
previously-enrolled candidates can be quickly located through the ‘My Candidates’ search
function. Payment can be made by credit/debit card via a secure online payment site
hosted by NAB.
AMEB syllabuses and publications can be purchased through AMEB Connect. The Manual
of Syllabuses – Music is available in the traditional, hard copy format. Alternatively, digital
versions of individual syllabuses or a family of syllabuses can be purchased online and
received in PDF format by email. AMEB Victoria’s online store can be accessed after
logging in to AMEB Connect. Teachers, schools and private enrollers can enrol candidates
for examination and purchase publications in one transaction.

from examination and will not be replaced. Examinations in Accordion Stradella will
continue to be offered.
Electronic Organ
Withdrawal of syllabus: The Electronic Organ syllabus has been withdrawn from
examination and will not be replaced.
Oboe
New syllabus: In 2018, AMEB will offer a new Oboe syllabus for examination, supported
by a range of publications. The grade books include appealing and pedagogically valuable
repertoire in a range of styles. The new syllabus includes two additional examinations,
Preliminary Grade and Certificate of Performance, which serves to cap Level 2
examinations as well as prepare candidates for the requirements of Level 3 examinations.
Publications: The following publications may be used with the new syllabus:
Oboe Series 1 – Preliminary to Grade 4 (2017)
Oboe Technical work (2017)
Oboe Sight-reading (2017)
Oboe recorded accompaniments – Preliminary to Grade 3
Note that Oboe Technical work (2000) cannot be used with the new syllabus. This book
may only be used with the “old” Oboe syllabus which was last published in the 2017
Manual of Syllabuses.
Examination entries: To enrol for examination in a revised syllabus on AMEB Connect
enter the subject number (which can be found in this Handbook) or start typing the name
of the subject, such as obo for oboe. A list of matching subjects will be displayed in a
dropdown list. Select the subject you require from the list, ensuring that “New Syllabus”
is indicated following the grade.
Withdrawal of the “old” syllabus: The “new” Oboe syllabus will be examined
concurrently for two years with the version of the Oboe syllabus that appeared in the 2017
Manual of Syllabuses. From the start of 2020 the previous Oboe syllabus will no longer be
available for examination.

popular genres in a range of rock, pop, metal and funk styles. For further information go

Music Production: Rockschool Music Production exams will be offered in 2018. On
completion of a Music Production grade, candidates will possess a wealth of technical,
practical and theoretical knowledge that they can apply to real-world scenarios, whether
it be audio production, electronic music production, mixing, editing, mastering or sound
for media.
Withdrawal of syllabuses: New Rockschool Electric Guitar, Bass and Drum syllabuses
will be released in late 2018, however the current syllabuses will be valid for use in
exams until late 2019.
Vocals syllabus: The current Rockschool Vocals Syllabus will continue to be offered until
further notice.

Candidate confidentiality
AMEB respects the confidentiality of candidates and therefore communication about
examinations is normally with the enrolling person. However, in an emergency, timetable
information will be provided to parents or candidates if they can accurately identify the
candidate by providing all of the following details: teacher’s name and address; candidate
name and date of birth; and the subject and grade for which the candidate is enrolled.
In addition, AMEB Victoria can only respond to appeals or complaints made by the person
who enrolled the candidate or the candidate, if over the age of 18. Where the candidate is
under the age of 18, the candidate’s parent or guardian may communicate with us on their
behalf.
Conferring of Diplomas
Successful Associate and Licentiate candidates, who have provided AMEB with evidence
of their completion of any Additional Requirements, will be invited to attend the annual
Conferring of Diplomas Ceremony. The Ceremony, at which diplomas will be formally
conferred upon candidates who successfully completed all requirements in 2017, will be
held on Tuesday 20 March 2018, commencing at 6pm, subject to the availability of The
Wilson Hall, University of Melbourne, Parkville. A successful candidate who is not able to
be present to receive his/her award in person will be admitted ‘in absentia’ to the diploma
and the certificate will be mailed following the ceremony.
Photocopies
In general, the Copyright Act prohibits the use of photocopied music. Photocopies should
not be used by candidates in AMEB examinations, unless an exception to copyright
applies, or the relevant music publisher has granted permission for the candidate to
make a copy.
In some circumstances, a copy of music may be required for use by the examiner. In
these cases, if performing from memory, candidates should provide a published edition
of the music to the examiner. Diploma candidates must supply a copy of their music to the
examiner.
If you are unsure of the provisions of the Copyright Act, please refer to the "Guide to Music
Copyright for Australian Educators" on the APRA/AMCOS website or contact APRA/
AMCOS on 1300 852 388 or apra@apra.com.au.
Trainee examiners
AMEB has a comprehensive and rigorous program for examiner training and professional
development. A Trainee Examiner may be present during an examination and may
conduct all or part of an examination. However, the Supervising Examiner will be
responsible for the examination and will provide the official assessment and written
report.
Warm-up
For candidates presenting for examinations at the AMEB Studios in Hawthorn, warm-
up facilities will be offered for a period of approximately 10 minutes to candidates in
Piano Grade 8, Certificate of Performance, Associate and Licentiate; all Voice and all
Instrumental subjects. Candidates may be accompanied to the warm-up room by their
accompanist and teacher. Warm-up facilities are provided for the purpose of warming-
up and tuning instruments; candidates and accompanists should not expect to have
sufficient time to rehearse repertoire. Note also that the availability of warm-up facilities
at other examination venues cannot be guaranteed and should not necessarily be
expected.

Practical Exams
Each candidate will receive a personal written report on the work presented.
While it is envisaged that the performance would not normally be graded, it would
be possible for the assessor to give a numerical mark or letter grade to suit a
teacher or school’s requirements.
Teachers may enrol candidates for repertoire-only evaluation through AMEB
Connect by using the subject codes listed overleaf. (Please request a subject
number if one is not listed.) Schools and teachers who wish to arrange a tailor-
made evaluation are invited to contact Jeremy Fletcher, Client Relations Manager
by emailing ameb-vic@unimelb.edu.au or calling 03 9035 8888.
Teacher Consultations
A teacher may request a 30 minute personal consultation with an AMEB
Examiner, which would be timetabled at the end of a day’s examining.
The examiner will provide general tips and suggestions relating to the
preparation of candidates for AMEB examinations. Although these suggestions
might be based upon the examiner’s observations of recent examination
performances by a teacher’s students, it would not be appropriate to discuss
examination results or specific examination reports. Consultations with
examiners will be available during most practical examination sessions this year
(except Licentiate Sessions), subject to programming constraints. Registration
for a Teacher Consultation can be made via AMEB Connect using the subject codes
listed overleaf. Teacher Consultations may be arranged for instruments which are
not listed, on application.

You are requested to quote your Client Number when making enquiries. It is also helpful to retain the Confirmation of
Enrolment documents, which provide a list of Candidate Numbers. AMEB Victoria’s administrative personnel would
be pleased to answer any queries and provide entry forms, syllabuses and past written examination papers. Special
requests, suggestions, complaints and appeals should be made in writing and addressed to Mr Alwyn Mott, General
Manager.
All AMEB communication about examinations is normally with the enrolling person. However, in an emergency,
timetable information will be provided to parents or candidates if they can accurately identify the candidate by providing
all of the following details: teacher’s name and address; candidate name and date of birth; and the subject and grade for
which the candidate is enrolled.
