Competition Brief
Green Runway Competition 2019
1. Background

In conjunction with its 20th Anniversary celebrations, Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd (the
Organiser) will be organizing the Inter-School Green Runway Competition. This
competition aims to promote and inspire school students, both primary and secondary
students, to take part in creating innovative and environmentally sustainable fashion or
clothing or costume designs made from day-to-day waste or unwanted materials.
Through upcycling, re-purposing, transforming, creative, ‘out-of-the-box’ innovation, the
regenerated designs will amplify the pivotal message that wastes may not necessarily be
wasted but they potentially can serve a new purpose with renewed life span. In the long
run, such initiatives can help divert waste from the landfill and ultimately, protect our
environment and conserve our natural resources.

2. Objectives:
a) To increase awareness about the importance of waste minimization and recovery
through sustainable practices.
b) To provide an opportunity for school students to learn how some unwanted materials
can be re-purpose or transformed into something practical and sustainable in the
long term.
c) To provide a platform for students to develop and present their ideas, interest and
talents in creating solutions for sustainable practices.
d) To motivate school students to appreciate the precious and non-renewable natural
resources while understanding the need to reduce the production of new or raw
materials which can contribute to lesser environmental pollution and better global
conservation.

3. Mentorship Programme
a) The Organiser will incorporate a mentorship session which will assist the participants
in brainstorming, conceptualizing, designing, creating or improving their design
entries during the competition.
b) The mentorship programme is not a criterion in the competition but an added
feature, complementary to the competition.
c) The mentorship session will provide industry insights, share experiences and
guidance on the following:
i. Improving the envisioned design;
ii. Advice or guidance on transforming discarded items into practical materials
that can help realizes its functionality or new purpose.
iii. Sharing of ideas on creating a final product that is reusable, practical and
sustainable.
d) A briefing will be conducted after the submission of entries followed by a visit (by
appointment) to the site. Details of the briefing and site visit will be communicated
accordingly to the participants in due course during the competition period.

4. General Rules and Regulations:
a) Organised by Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd. (the Organiser), the competition is
open by invitation to both primary and secondary schools in Kuching District.
b) There are two (2) categories for competition:
i. Primary School Category
ii. Secondary School Category
c) The competition is limited to the first ten (10) entries per category received by the
Organiser.
d) Participation is free but any cost incurred shall be borne by the participants.
e) The school is required to submit only one (1) entry/team comprising of maximum two
(2) students (including 1 model) and one (1) teacher.
f) The closing date for entry form submission is on 30 June 2019 (extended). The
Organiser reserves the right to extend the deadline of the Competition without prior
notice.
g) The competition duration is from 15 May 2019 until 10 August 2019.
h) The contestants are required to showcase their entry designs at the finale event
mentioned below.
i) Contestants are required to provide name/theme of design and inspiration for the
design, types and sources of materials used.
j) The judging panel would comprise of the Organiser, together with its relevant
associates/experts in the field, government agencies and local councils.
k) The showcase, judging process and announcement of winners will held during a prize
presentation ceremony at the following event:

 Venue: Hilton Hotel Kuching
 Time: 8.00am-12.30pm

5. Judging Criteria:

Creativity and innovation - The design product is original, innovative, 30
creative and advanced in terms of its overall
purpose/objectives
Usage of used and -The design product comprises of used or 25
discarded items discarded materials made out from paper,
plastic, aluminium, scrap iron, or related.
Wearable and -The design product is wearable, useful, safe 15
sustainable and practical in day-to-day life; and able to serve
its new purpose for another lifespan.
Overall Aesthetic -Skillful, distinctive, neat, tidy, thorough, 20
appearance methodical.
Achievement of -General assessment – environmental 10
competition objectives conservation, waste reduction, repurposing,
upcycling, improve air quality, generate better
awareness.

6. Replacement/Disqualification

The judging panel reserves the right to select the next best entry to replace any
contestants who decided to withdraw or are subsequently disqualified.

7. Judges’ Decision
The judges’ decision will be final and any dispute or appeal will not be entertained.

8. Prizes
a) The competition prizes will be as follows:

9. Photographs
The Organiser reserves the right to use photographs of winners and their work for the
purpose of advertising and promotions.

10. Amendments to the Rules and Regulations


The Organiser reserves the right to modify or vary the rules and regulations, cancel or
suspend the competition should there be any discrepancy in the competition.

11. Acceptance and Agreement


By participating in this contest, all participants are deemed to have accepted and
agreed to be bound by these rules and regulations.
