Tech Room

Preface

My goal for my Senior Project is to build a fully functional tech room on the 3rd floor.

We were originally going to have a tech room last year, but that was scrapped halfway through.

However, after talking with Phil, he offered his room to be transformed into a tech room. This is

great news for anybody who’s into technology, as we’re planning on adding a computer

workbench and Oculus Rift. Both staff members and regular students will benefit from this

project as well, due to the planned workbench utilities of the room.

As of Now, I have approval from Mr Stubbs to start the project, so I just need to

reorganize the electrical closet on the 3rd floor. We won’t be able to fit in a lot of desktop

computers, but the room will be useful for fixing computers or testing hardware/software. As a

minimum goal, we’re aiming for at least a testing rig and an Oculus Rift set to be placed in the

room.

Driving Question

How can I improve the tech situation at the school, while making the school more safe?

Goals

1. To create a functioning tech room for staff and student purposes.

2. To increase the safety of the school.

Specialized Mentors

1. James Viets

2. Phil Shmidt

3. Michael Stubbs

Key Content Knowledge

I have been working around computers for almost 5 years. I mastered hardware setup,
software setup, and all sorts of safety measures when it comes to computers.

21st Century Skills

1. Computer Information Skills

3

2. Civic Literacy and Engagement

Limitations

1. Electrical Closet limitations: We might not be able to take the P.E equipment out of the

electrical closet.

2. Time constraints

Deliverables

I will be documenting my progress with blogs and photos. I will make sure to take notes

of the project and compile it into a presentation format. I could also take some videos of certain

aspects of the room, such as the planned Oculus Rift set.

constructive thought.

“5 Reasons School Computer Labs Still Matter.” ViewSonic,

www.viewsonic.com/library/education/school-computer-labs-matter.

This article goes over the reasons as to why schools need a functioning computer room. It

essentially states that a digital workshop is useful for any student who needs access to a

computer if they don’t own one. There are also some great features, such as collaboration, that

computer labs can improve upon.

5

Resources

1. At least one person to move the equipment (I can fill in this role).

2. Extra computer parts

3. Ethernet cables

4. Time

5. 2 tables
6

6. 1 desk

Budget

Around $400 is all I need. There’s plenty of equipment that I can use from home. For

ethernet cables, I could ask Phil or James if they have any extra cables.
