This work has been a combined effort of all over members ,and it wouldn’t have
been fruitful had it not been for the ostensible support of many individuals and
organizations, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to each and every one
of them, especially to the many residents of Thottippal village who were patient
enough to give both their time and attention to us.Our thanks also extends to our

college and our teacher,

Thottippal is a village in mukundapuram ,it has a population of 8241, it’s a small

village covering a distance of we are here to present an overview
on current condition of thottipal, the underlying problems faced in the place and
present our suggestions to improve the conditions of the same, these could be
categorized into three, first one being socio economic, related to the current political
as well as financial scenario in the area, education and health and finally the
environmental problems

With over 86.5% of its residents educated thottipal seems to contribute to our kerals image of
a well educated state . Govt Primary and Govt Middle Schools are available in this Village.
Nearest Govt Polytechnic College is inAmballur. Nearest Private Pre Primary School and Private
Secondary School are in Parappukara. Both children and adults seems to understand the need
and importance of education.the nearby scholls are half an hour distance from the main centre of
thottippal hence theres no problems in terms of transportation and location for students.
On the other hand we found that the village seems to fall short of proper hospital facilities the
nearest hospitals-bishop alapatt mission hospitals and marina hospital as well as LAL memorial
hospital is over 1and half hours from thottippal and its not just the distance when we visited the
nearby hospital we found a lack of hygienic environment and shortage of staffs, the ER especially
is overcrowded with patients and clearly understaffed. There’s also the matter that these hospitals
aren’t equipped with proper instruments and machines.

Our suggestion is to in fact construct more hospitals that could provide for the villagers, and
equip the newly constructed ones with latest technologies while providing low cost services,
especially for the poorer patients .

A total of 39.3% makes up working population

Most of the residents in thottippal seem to have market based occupation, running small scale
shops or working for MNC’s nearby.

in the economic scenario , what we found intriguing was the working conditions which were
poor, both in case of small scale shops as well as in larger complexes .in mulungu for example
grabbed the headlines back in march 2014 when a gas cylinder exploded in jewellery making shop
killing over 8 workers and injuring many.although its been 4 years since since the fatal accident
there hasn’t been much improvement in the working condition of the residents , especially for the
poor section of workers doing manual labour

Another problem was the stiff competition between the on growing shopping complex and MN’cs
and the small scale shop owners who were struggling to keep up with the pace

If the thottippal panchayat could host regular inspections and check ups on working condition ,
situation like mulungu explosion could have been avoided, so we suggest hosting a semi-annual
inspections supervised by village officers to be conducted on the working areas ,and presenting
reports to the collector on the current scenario of the place
Providing incentive schemes to small scale labours and merchants that could encourage their
business and help them to keep up with the large scale complexes

The environmental problems faced by this village could be categorized into three-air pollution,
water pollution and ground pollution(via disposal of waste

Air pollution

Along with parappookkara,Nellayi, thottippal is one of the places with brick kilns, which causes
pollution through smoke released through its exhaust. For many years residents seems to have
raised their concerns over the growing number of the same, but to no avail. “A huge mafia acts
behind the entire brick business. Only a small per cent of clay mined from the area is used for
making the bricks. The rest has been sold and sent to places for various purposes. It is estimated
that clay worth Rs. 25 lakh has been mined from a cent of land,” said Varghese Thoduparambil, an
environmental activist and leader of Muriyad Farmers’ Movement. Mindless mining has been
caused total environmental imbalance in the area. Studies have revealed that the brick-kilns are
creating severe environmental and health hazards in the area, the memorandum said

The village could trace the steps taken by its nearby village Parapookkara which grabbed
headlines a few years back due to the efforts by many activist voicing their concerns over the
unchecked and unsupervised brick industries in the are. The panchayat cooperations could
especially help the residents in this part.

Many of the water bodies especially the manjaamkuzhi dam seems to have become the main
dump site for garbage both by nearby industries as well as the residents. But aside from this which
when compared to the exponential growth of water hyacinth , a species of weed plant that cause
distortion in ecological life of rivers seems to bloom at constant rate.

Thottippal could make use of innovative new technologies, such as the newly released machine
that would wipe out the weeds from the river in less than 3 days. This solution has 3 tier benefits

1)Helps to remove weed with ease and less time

2)The weeds in concerns here is water hyacinth , a particular species which when properly
processed could create bio fuel, since we are living at a time like this were depletion of fossil fuel
is one of our primary concerns for our future generations, this could help out a lot

3)creates employment/generates revenue- those operating the machines as well as those that
processes the released weeds could have an opportunity to generate income.

Beginning on 15 August 2018, severe floods affected our state of Kerala, due to unusually high
rainfall during the monsoon season. it was the worst flood in Kerala in nearly a centuryAccording
to the Kerala government, one-sixth of the total population of Kerala had been directly affected by
the floods and related incidents. The Indian government had declared it a Level 3 Calamity, or
"calamity of a severe nature".

Thottippal was one of the most effected regions of kerala during the drastic floods of 2018.Due to
its proximity to nearby bund thottippal was heavily effected in the floods, over 10 houses
destroyed entire streets were wiped out.Due to its geographical structure having hilly areas
landslides were frequent .for over a month life had completely went to a brink in thottippal.

Much is to be done to obtain a safer, sustainable and healthier village. The problems
are diverse and some are only being recognised but it is important to come up with
solutions that could not only increase the quality of lives of residents but one that

could help environmental sustainability.
