1 INTRODUCTION
The below details is snap from approved shop drawing. As per the site condition, there is no access in many
location to weld the 8mm stiffener plate as clouded in the below snap. As there is 10mm gap
maintained between fin plate and frame for erection tolerance, 6mm thick as clouded in the below snap is
not required structurally. The connection capacity is rechecked without considering these stiffeners.

8mm thick stiffener as highlighted in the above detail is provided to increase the torsional capacity
of main steel. Torsion is created in the beam due to eccentricity of frame connection. Torsion
capacity of beam is checked below without considering stiffener.
The common eccentricity is many location is around 250mm. However there is also around 450mm
eccentricity. Wherever eccentricity exceeds more than 250mm, cleats are welded to heavy beams.
So The check is carried considering the below two type of cases. This is most critical case and this
will confirm that other type of beams/eccentricity will also be safe.
a. HEA 120 torsion capacity for 250mm eccentricity
b. IPE 270 torsion capacity for 450mm eccentricity
a. Torsion capacity of HEA 120

HEA 120 properties b = 120 mm
tf = 8 mm
tw = 5 mm
h = 114 mm
It = (2*120*8^3+(114-2*8)*5^3)/3
4
= 45043.33 mm
Torsional section modulus Wt = 45043.33/5
3
= 9008.67 mm

Torsional section modulus Wt = 199736.89/7.5
3
= 26631.59 mm
4 CONCLUSION
Based on the above calculation, it is concluded that the local capacity of main beam is safe to receive
the bird mesh frame load without any stiffeners.
