IMPLEMENTATION OF LESSON STUDY
AT SD NEGERI JATEN, YOGYAKARATA

A. Rationale
Lesson Study is an inquiry cycle that supports teachers to experiment, observe and
improve. As teachers work together to study student learning, schools become places
where both students and teachers are passionate about learning.

B. ACTIVITIES Of DOING PLAN

The activities done in PLAN steps of Lesson Study can be described as

follows:
1. Analyzing curriculum content
The curriculum used at SMA MANDIRI is Kurikulum 2013, especially for
grade 3 as the implementation class. Therefore, this Lesson study curriculum
refers to Kurtilas used in Indonesia.

2. Selecting subject, theme, topic, and/or concept that will be practiced or

implemented
The topic was chosen to be implemented in the lesson study were:

Basic Competency: 3. 1 Explaining the mathematical operation of numbers

Indicator: Stating place value from the Ones to the Thousands place

3. Developing a lesson plan or research lesson to be implemented

According to the content of curriculum used at the school, Lesson Plan was
designed. The design used to create the lesson plan refers to Hypothetical
Learning Trajectory (HLT) approach. The lesson plan and students activities
sheet used in this lesson study is attached.
4. Deciding a teacher to be a model that will practice the lesson, usually called
model teacher
To implement the lesson plan in the real teaching, the model teacher chosen
was Mr Ulil Amri from Indonesia, while other group members observed the
class. The class was also observed by all members of group 2: Mr. Agnes
Farcesisca, Miss Susilawati, Miss Sri Wahyuni, Mr Bis Bech, Mr Mahrani and
3 observers from SEAMEO Qitep in Mathematics, Ms. Pasttita Ayu Laksiwati,
Ms. Wisnuningtyas Wirani, and Mr. Bungkus Dias Prasetyo.

5. Setting up the classroom management:

For conducting the lesson study effectively, managing the classroom is an
important one. The class was grouped into 5 groups consisted of 6 students
each. The pupils was given a name tag. The names of groups were: Group A,
B, C, D and E.

C. ACTIVITIES Of DOING DO

To implement lesson plan made by the group 2 into real teaching, then our
group headed to SD Negeri Jaten , which are located in the district of Sleman
Yogyakarta in which we will apply the lesson study activity consisting of PLAN, DO
and SEE. As for the activity of our group see in addition to members of our group
also involve another group to be observers on lesson study activities.
Place : SD Negeri Jaten
Class : 3
Time : 08.10 – 09.20
In DO step usually the activities will be:
(a) a model teacher implement the research lesson prepared.
 Before lesson activity begins, teacher introduces himself and states the
learning goal.
 Before starting the lesson the teacher motivates students to do ice breaking
(“tepuk semangat). Students seem very enthusiastic and interesting with
the teacher and observers who come to their class. It not just making happy
but also fresher body, good thing for doing next activity.
 Teacher and students doing activity.
 Aperseption
Teacher lets some students to answer the question. The aim of
these activities is to induce student’s knowledge about two and
three number digit. ( Prior Knowledge).
 Main Activities
1. Teacher use the contex to introduce the students.
2. According to the contex, the teacher show a media (peanut
packets) in a thousands, tens and ones. And then he arrange 5
packets thousands, 5 packets tens and 1 packet ones. And give ask
the students to place that number into place value. And let the
students discuss it. (5 minutes)
3. The teacher let the students to answear the question. Some
students raise they hand and they write result in the white
board.
4. And then teacher and students discuss the result together.
5. Teacher and students doing activity. Teacher stick papers of
thousands, hundreds, tens and ones in to white board and give the
students task to working together.
6. The teacher let the students to answear the question in task.
Some students raise they hand and they write result in the
white board.
7. And then teacher and students discuss the result together.
8. The teacher give another activity.
- Teacher give 4 boxes. Box of thousands, hundreds,
tens and ones and card number. And some number.
Teacher ask students to place in boxes which has a
lable name.
- Students discuss in group, after finish each group will
present in front of the class.
 Summary And Reflection.
Students are constructing conclution.
 Reinforcement.
Teacher give the student task.
(b) Teacher give the some students appreciation who active in the class (DO)
(c) observers observe, collect, and record data (SEE) related to students’ learning,
thinking, interaction during the lesson
 Observers sit in the backside of class and restrict to interrupt lesson activity.
 Observers could be not help the teacher.
 Observers observe students activity when they are studying, when they
lost their focusing on learning activity, what they are thinking about their
tasks.
 Observes always focusing on students

D. ACTIVITIES of DOING SEE
The real teaching was needed to implement our lesson plan. The chosen
school was SDN Jaten which are located in Jalan Kalasan Pakem Sleman Yogyakarta
. The lucky class was third class which consist of 30 students. We were welcomed by
the classroom teacher who were waiting for us in front of the classroom. After
introducing our group member then we were ready to do the plan. All member of
Group 2 except pak Ulil as a teacherf was observer and all member of Group 5 was
also observe the class handled by pak Ulil. Besides group 5, there were 3 members of
SEAMEO Qitep, Ms. Tita, Ms, Tyas, and Mr. Bungkus who were observing the
classroom.
The purpose of the observations conducted among others:
(1) the first to find out how effective the lesson plan that we have made on
students.
(2) To determine if there are problems or difficulties experienced by
students during the teaching process.
(3) To determine the extent of the interest of students to the material being
taught.
The observation sheet was given to all members in the form of observation
checklist and notes which required the observer to describe activities they found
during the lesson prosses from the beginning until the end of lesson. The findings
written in the observation sheet will be usefull to be shared in the reflection session
after the real teaching done.
Reflection was done after the real teaching. At this moment the teacher
model was given the first chance to explaine his feeling in his real teaching
experiences. The second chance was given to the members of group 2 to report what
they found during the observation session during the lesson. They were
recommended to give advice or recommendation to the teacher model to enhance his
teaching. In addition, the committee also report their finding in their point of view
and give recommendation to some problems and difficulties. These recommendation
were useful to improve teacher’s competence in the teaching and learning activities.
The outcome of these reflections will be in use for the next step so, the lesson plan
has to be modified for the next teaching process.

The activities as in the SEE steps:

1. Model teacher examine his or her note during teaching and learning process
In the reflection session, the model teacher told his feeling and experiences
when he teach and practice the lesson plan. The teacher examines his note during
teaching and learning process. The teacher were excited of students respond to his
teaching. But, he found some problems at the beginning of the lesson when the
students were shy and tend to be passive. Most students understood the topic but
not some of them actively respond to the teacher’s question/tasks. Another
problem is that student not familiar with the languange so some student look so
confused.

2. Observers read what they have found during the lesson

The observer reported their observation outcomes in the discussion session.
Beside of reporting the findings, they were also giving recommendation and also
suggestions to the teacher model in order to improve his teaching competence and
overcoming the teaching problems. The strength and weaknesses of the lesson run
by teacher should also reported since this is importance to open the teachers eyes
and ears to the hidden voice or his students.

E. CONCLUSION
As a conclusion, the real “product” of a Lesson Study cycle is much more than
just one polished lesson. It is a team collaborates to improve instruction, that
deepen their knowledge of content and student thinking and their commitment
to working together to improve instruction.

F. RECOMENDATIONS
1. Conduct courses on new method and approach in mathematics teaching and learning
have significant impact to teachers’ professional competency. For example, planning
a lesson was a really challenging to studies about Lesson Study activity eventually we
are progressing along each day and appreciated it. We learned a lot from each other
through discussions, reviews, reflections and positive comments from observers to
deepen our understanding of teaching and learning Mathematics which will affect the
quality of students thinking. Somehow, in the end we agreed that our goal was
achieved in making students value mathematics by developing their thinking skills.
2. Since students involved in every learning activity which teacher had put a lot of efforts
in from the planning stage to application itself, it is suggested that lesson by using
teaching aid activities should be well-planned and carefully prepared for every
learners’ benefit and improvement. The teacher should prepare and use appropriate
teaching materials, teaching aids, worksheet and lesson plan to make students’ activity
more fun and exciting for easier understanding of the content. Teacher should always
create joyful and comfortable atmosphere for in class activities to encourage every
student to pay attention and participate actively. Teacher should try to make students
enjoy doing the activities while increasing their interest and inculcate positive attitude
towards Mathematics.
3. The lesson plan and the teaching and learning process should be synchronized. Time
management is important but the teacher has the right to do some adjustment according
to the situation.
