Also Add following for bulk carrier staff

1. Understanding and troubleshooting of faults with water ingress alarm system in cargo holds,
with emphasize on safety of entry of void spaces/cargo holds, location of intrinsically safe
isolation zeners ( some gruesome accidents including multiple death while searching for this
on sailing ship).
2. Forward Dewatering system fault identification/trouble shooting, regulation (SOLAS)
requirement for operation remotely.
3. PA announcing system.
4. Basic trouble shooting of deck cargo cranes, limit adjustments.
5. Trouble shooting of incinerators failures.
6. Emergency wiring ( jumpers) for alpha lubricators in case of angle decoder failure.
7. Shaft potential measurement/recording/monitoring and its importance, and consequences
if incorrectly ground shaft.
8. Trouble shooting of auto back wash filter malfunction due to electrical failures.

1. Most critical would be electrical safety, with proper lock out / tag out techniques at
the beginning of any work on electrical systems.
Certainly agree. This is indeed covered anyway during the course but have now formally added this
topic on Day 1.

2. I think we need to have greater emphasis on boiler circuits of different types,

including all safety trips, cut outs and remote gauges, including DPTs and Pressure /
temperature transducers. (now only small part on day 8)
We have now devoted the entire Day 10 to the Boiler topic and have also shifted the PLC topic to Day
9 (before the Boiler topic) to aid in understanding.
We also request you to provide one or two Boiler electrical control diagrams from your vessels (having
PLC controller and / or any other type of control).

3. Would it be possible to include something on bridge control / UMS systems and

transfer of control from bridge to ER, telegraph systems, faultfinding etc.
Not too clear about the above…..is the reference made to electrical changeover….or……is the
reference made towards pneumatic circuit changeover ???
If the reference is Electrical based…..and if you wish to include this topic….then, would request you to
provide the circuit diagram/s of the Bridge control system from vessel (NABTESCO / AUTOCHIEF
System) and also the circuit diagram of E/R telegraph system.

4. It may be worthwhile to invest some time into computer networking and virus
eradication, which is sorely needed on many ships
Yes, this is a good suggestion. We can certainly do this (as mentioned above, we conduct a complete
4 days course on this topic) and have, as of now, allocated 4 hours to this topic on Day 11.
