Who is the author of the primary source? What do you know about the author that may shape his/her perspective?

Jose Rizal is the author of Mi Ultimo Adios. He is popularly known with a lot of masterpiece which mostly tells about the Spaniards. In addition, Rizal was born during the
Spanish colonization, that's why at his young age, he is already aware about the happenings in his environment. As the time goes by, Rizal becomes more open minded about the
C unequal treatment, cruelty, slavery, brutality and improper form of governance by the Spaniards, and those things was probably his reason for having a bad impression in the

The intended readers of this poem is the Filipinos, specifically those people from Spanish civilization, because it portrayed the Philippines that he dreamed to be, and it

Where and when was the primary source published or created?

$ The original version of Mi Ultimo Adios has no title, no indicated date, and has no official signatory from Dr. Jose Rizal. However, most of the accounts stating that this poem is
being done by Rizal in Fort Santiago (while he is in the jai), before the night of his execution, last December 30 1896. Since Rizal did not inscribed a title to the poem, his friend
Mariano Ponce, published it with a title, "Mi Ultimo Pensamiento" (My last speech), but it doesn't catch much attention. Hence, Fr. Mariano Dacanay, who also had a copy
C of the poem, was able to named it as Mi Ultimo Adios which becomes more popular (My last farewell).

N Describe the historical context. What was happening during this event or time period?

E During the Spanish colonization, many privileges of the Filipinos was taken away. In the government setting, most of the appointed officials are Spaniards and only limited
N Filipinos are given a chance to have a position in the government. In the educational setting, only rich people can afford schooling. But, those unequal treatment by the
Spaniards is not the only noticeable thing during their regime, but also the slavery, brutality and cruelty which ruined the life of every Filipinos. One of the example is the

martyrdom of the three Filipino Priest named as GOMBURZA(Gomez, Burgos, Zamora), and Dr. Jose Rizal have witnessed it at his young age and promised that he would
dedicate himself to avenge one day for those victims. In short, those happenings brings motivation to Dr. Jose Rizal to write a lot of things against the Spaniards.
Unfortunately, last December 26, 1896, he was being advice to execution due to accusations that he started a rebellion against the Spanish government. But it doesn't affect the
desire of Dr. Jose Rizal to make his nation free from the Spaniards, that's why he wrote his last message entitled by the scholars as Mi Ultimo Adios, before the night of his
execution. Therefore, it is the main reason for why the content of his last poem is mostly tells about his last "goodbyes".

ANSWER: It was observable from the first
stanza of the poem that Dr. Jose Rizal is
willing to die for our country with no regret
but only gladness. He also adores the beauty
of our country that's why for him, it is worth
to fight for. In addition, fear of being
forgotten is also noticeable(sixth stanza),
because he thought that if the country
achieved liberty and freedom, his grave will
be forgotten someday. For instance,
satisfaction of death can be observe in the
13th anda 14th stanza from which he
explains that there is peace in death wherein
there is no slaves and oppressors. Moreover,
he also tries to conveys to all Filipinos how
much he dreamed our country to achieved
freedom and independence, even though it
may cause ones death. In short, he was
trying to informed the Filipinos about the
improper system of the spanish governance.
Historically, it also shows the cruelty of the
spaniards due to extreme cases of killings
and tortures especially to those who
opposed the spanish government (9th
stanza). Lastly, this poem is mostly tells
about his "last goodbyes" because he wrote
it before the night of his execution or before
he was died.

ANSWER: My question in mind that makes
me curious about is that why "Mi Ultimo
Adios" is originally written in spanish rather
than Filipino which is more understandable
for me, and yet, Dr. Jose Rizal is the one
who created the quotation stating that,
"Those who does not love their native
tongue is worse than a putrid fish and
beast," and it obviously opposed the
medium of language that he used in most of
his writings which is usually published in
English and Spanish. However, as I continue
to read a lot of sources, I have found out that
the main audience of Dr. Jose Rizal is not
only the Filipinos, but also the spaniards,
that's why he wrote a lot of things with their
language, including the Mi Ultimo Adios. It
is one of the admirable thing about the
personality of Dr. Jose Rizal because he has
the courage to express his perspective with
the use of Spanish language, so that he ca
directly conveyed to the spaniards how evil
they are. Moreover, I also discovered that
most of the Filipinos during spanish period
are fluent in spanish language because it was
part of the educational system that they've
offer. Therefore, Filipinos are still capable
to understand the message of Dr. Jose
Rizal's last poem, although it was not
written with our native language, and take
note, during this moment, we don't have our
own official language.
