Workshop Art Supply List

Bryce Cameron Liston

This is list of personal supplies that I generally use and is quite typical of what most
artist carry and use. The list is to be taken as a general guide; students are not required
to have the exact items listed unless otherwise noted.

Colors Required:
Titanium white
Cadmium yellow light (or pale, depending on brand)
Cadmium orange
Cadmium red light
Perylene red (aka Pyrrole, Pyrol red–No Cadmium)
Quinacridone Violet
Ultramarine blue (deep or French)
Viridian
Transparent oxide red (I recommend Rembrandt brand)
Yellow ochre
Raw Umber
Ivory black

Colors Optional:
Cadmium lemon yellow
Cremnitz white (Michael Harding or Blue Ridge make great paint)
Cobalt blue
Turquoise blue (I recommend Rembrandt brand)

Note: I have found Blue Ridge and Michael Harding to be paint of the highest quality. I
also use Rembrandt, Gamblin, M. Graham and Old Holland. No student grade paint
please.

Panels:
Students will need several of each size- 6x8, 8x10 and 9x12, enough to do several
sketches each day. For our longer poses please bring several panels in either, or all, of
these sizes, 11 x 14, 12x16 or 14x18.

Linen or Canvas Pads:

These are a great alternative to a panel. For the most part we will be working with a
limited time and on a smaller scale. So it really helps if the surface you are painting on
isn’t too expensive. I recommend the Centurion acrylic or oil primed pads in an 11x14,
12x16 or larger size (they are easy to cut down). They’re high-quality, lightweight and
inexpensive and can be found at Jerry’s and/or ASW. If you choose to use these or
other pads you will need to bring a couple of thin, lightweight plywood or masonite
boards to tape them to.

Odorless Mineral Spirits: (Gamsol or other artist grade).

Medium: (student’s choice. I use 1 part stand oil to 5 parts odorless mineral spirits).

Brushes: Hog bristle or synthetic- at least two of each size 2 thru 12 (even numbers)
filbert or flat. Also, A few soft bristle brushes in assorted sizes (sable, mongoose or
badger hair). I prefer the Rosemary Master Series (I use all sizes and shapes).

Palette knives:

Brush Cleaner: Bring a portable size brush cleaner to hold your mineral spirits.

Sketch pad: 16x20 preferable. Plus some assorted soft charcoal pencils and charcoal
sticks and a kneaded eraser. We will be doing some sketching.

Paper towels:

Wet panel carrier: Raymar makes a great and simple carrier www.raymarart.com. If
you’re looking for something more substantial try www.allaprimapochade.com Ben
makes a great product.

Palette: (glass or wood, whatever size fits inside your portable easel).

Plein-Air easel--highly recommended: The school does provide easels for students.
But I have found most artists paint outside and therefore have a plein-air easel setup
that they like and are familiar with. These tend to take up less space and are easy for
the students to move around.
