First Assignment for Design of Machine Element-I (ME 1506) – 2019-20

PART 1_________________________________________________________________
1. A C-frame subjected to a force of 15 kN is shown in Fig. 1. It is made of grey cast iron
FG 300 and the factor of safety is 2.5. Determine the dimensions of the cross-section of the
frame.

Fig. 1
2. Critical section AA of a crane hook (Fig. 2) is considered, for purposes of analysis, to
be trapezoidal with dimensions as shown. Determine the resultant stress (bending plus
direct tension) at points P and Q.

Fig. 2

3. Select a diameter of a steel driveshaft that transmits 250 hp at 5000 rpm. Bending and
axial loads are negligible.
(a) What is the nominal shear stress at the surface?
(b) If a hollow shaft of inside diameter 0.9 times outside diameter is used, what outside
diameter would be required to give the same outer surface stress?
4. A mild steel shaft of 60 mm diameter is subjected to a bending moment of 25X 105 N-
mm and torque T. If the yield point of steel in tension is 230 N/mm2, find the maximum
value of this torque without causing yielding of the shaft according to (a) Maximum
Principal stress theory, (b) Maximum shear stress theory. Assume Factor of safety 1.5.

PART 2_____________________________________________________________________
5. Estimate the diameter of the hole in Fig. 3, if the maximum stress at the critical sections (i.e.
at the hole and the fillet) are same. Use tables or graphs for stress concentration factor at the fillet
and the hole section.

Fig. 3
6. What is the factor of safety using Modified Goodman’s equation if the part, as shown in
Fig. 4, is subjected to moment load (M) varying between 2,250,000 N-mm and 1,250,000 N-
mm in each cycle? The geometric stress concentration factor at the base of the radius is Kt =
1.8. The part is made of AISI 1020 steel, with Syp = 350 MPa, Sult= 420 MPa, Se = 190 MPa,
and q = 0.6.

Fig. 4
7. A solid circular shaft made of steel Fe 620 (Sult=620 N/mm2 and Syp=380 N/mm2) is subjected
to an alternating torsional moment, which varies from -200 N-m to + 400 N-m. The shaft is ground
and the expected reliability is 90%. Neglecting stress concentration, calculate the shaft diameter
for infinite life. The factor of safety is 2. Use distortion energy theory of failure.

8. A cantilever beam made of cold drawn steel 40C8 (Sult=600 N/mm2 and Syp= 380 N/mm2) is
shown in Fig. 5. The force acting P at the free end varies from -50 N to + 250 N. The expected
reliability is 90%. The notch sensitivity factor is 0.9. The diameter ‘d’ of the beam at the fillet
cross-section is 10 mm. Estimate the life of the beam.
