Assignment Sheet No.3

1. A bearing shown in the Fig.1 below is fastened to a frame by 4 bolts spaced equally
on a 400 mm bolt circle. The bearing flange diameter is 500 mm and a load of 20
kN is applied at 250 mm from the frame. The bolt material is 40C8 (σy = 360 MPa)
and take factor of safety 3. Determine size of the bolt. Dimensions are in
millimeters. (All Dimensions in MM)

Fig.1.

2. Find the smallest diameter bolt that can be used in the clevis shown in Fig. 2 if P =
400 kN. The shearing strength of the bolt is 300 MPa. (Ans d =30 mm)

Fig.2.

3. A 22 mm diameter bolt, having a diameter at the root of the threads of 18.56 mm is

used to fasten two timbers together as shown in Fig. 3. The nut is tightened to
cause a tensile stress of 124 MPa in the bolt. Compute the shearing stress in the
head of the bolt and in the threads. Also, determine the outside diameter of the
washers if their inside diameter is 28.57 mm and the bearing stress is limited to 5.51
MPa.

Answers

Tensile Force = 48 KN

Shearing stress in the

head of the bolt = 54 MPa
Shearing stress in threads
of the bolt = 52 MPa
Outside diameter of the
washer = 109 mm

4. A pipe carrying steam at 3.5 MPa has an outside diameter of 450 mm and a wall
thickness of 10 mm (Fig.4.). A gasket is inserted between the flange at one end of
the pipe and a flat plate used to cap the end. How many 40-mm-diameter bolts
must be used to hold the cap on if the allowable stress in the bolts is 80 MPa, of
which 55 MPa is the initial stress? What circumferential stress is developed in the
pipe? Why is it necessary to tighten the bolt initially and what will happen if the
steam pressure should cause the stress in the bolts to be twice the value of the initial
stress? (Ans. n=17 bolts; circumferential stress = 75.25 MPa)

5. Calculate the size of the bolts for the 3-hole bracket shown in Fig.5. Load F is 7.5
kN and the design shear stress is 27 MPa. Coarse threads are to be used on bolts.
The bolts can be fastened to the walls by two bolts at the top and one at the bottom
OR one at the top and two at the bottom. Which one do you suggest and why?

Answer

Two bolts at the top is

6. A pressurized cast iron cylinder shown in Fig.6 is used to hold pressurized gas at a
static pressure of 8 MPa. The cylinder is joined to a low-carbon steel cylinder head
by bolted joints. The bolt to be used is M36x4 and σy = 1100 MPa. A hard copper
gasket is used to make the joint leak proof. Determine the number of bolts and
probable stresses in the bolt. Take factor of safety of 3

Fig.6
Ans.

N=26 BOLTS

σt = 166.38 MPa

7. The plate welded to the end of the I-Beam is fastened to the support with four 10
mm diameter bolts (two on each side). Assuming that the load is equally divided
among the bolts, determine the normal and shear stress in a bolt (Fig.7).

8. A steam engine of effective diameter 300 mm is subjected to a steam pressure of

1.5 MPa. The cylinder head is connected by means of eight bolts having yield
strength of 350 MPa and endurance limit of 250 MPa. The bolts are tightened
with an initial preload of 2 times that of steam force. A soft copper gasket is used
to make a leak proof joint. The stress-concentration factor is 2.8 and take factor
of safety of 2. Determine the size of the bolts. (M 18 x 2.5)

9. A steel plate subjected to force 8.68 kN and fixed to a vertical pillar by means of
three identical bolts as shown in Fig.8. The bolts and plates are made of plain
carbon steel having yield strength of 586 MPa and 344 MPa respectively. Find
the diameter of bolt and bearing stress in the plate. Take factor safety of 2. (M20
x 1.5, σb = 98.13 MPa)

tightened until the tensile stress in the bolt is 150 MPa. Find the smallest safe
diameter “d” of the washers if the working bearing stress for wood is 13 MPa.

11. A cast iron bracket, as shown in Fig.10, supports a load of 10 kN. It is fixed to the
horizontal channel by means of four identical bolts, two at A and two at B. The
bolts are made of steel 30C8 (σy = 400 MPa) and factor of safety is 6. Determine
the nominal diameter of the bolt. (M 18)

allowable stress for bolt as σt = 200 MPa. Calculate the diameter of the bolts
required. Use principal stress theory. (All dimensions in mm) (Ans. d=13
mm)
